| #1HendrakeJul 06, 2008 14:34:18 | Hi, I'm in the process of writing up the back story for my world. The (very basic) idea is that the campaign world was once a sanctuary of the gods where they created mortal servants / playthings in their own image but left when the Abyss (a sentient "pure evil") discovered their sanctuary and introduced chaos into the mix. Anyway, this means that I've got to tailor the gods to particular races a lot more than generic 4e. I'm okay with that but I've never been particularly fond of the "races, races and more races" concept and I was thinking of completely dropping both the Half-Elf and the Halfling race from my campaign world. Not planning on making them NPC-only - just plan on making them non-existent. Also, I'm not very interested in going into the origins of the Tieflings to the world - though it's doable, I suppose. Also planning to do away with the monster-gnome, as well as a couple of other monster-races - but that hardly matters, really. Anyway, I can't see anything that Halflings and Half-Elves do anything that other races can't, but I thought I'd ask a bunch of experts, "Do you think I can eliminate these two (or three - Tiefling) races from the game without undue issues?" Oh, and my players will be fine with it, so that's not an issue. Thoughts, opinions, ideas welcomed. |

The loss from Halflings is perfered class for rogue (+2 Dex +2 Charisma) but as they tend to be mutually exclusive rogue builds, no big loss. The loss from Half Elf is perfered class for warlock (+2 Con +2 Charisma) all but starlock can survive without it (and the start lock as well). The loss from Tieflings is more involved, its semi-perfered (by the rules perfered in practice not so much) Warlord (+2 Int, +2 Cha) however its real lost is in blaster wizards (Tiefling Feat +2 int = +3 effectively to attack rolls). Again I don't think the impact is that major, but those are things to consider. |
| #4HendrakeJul 06, 2008 15:21:28 | really this is a Campaign & Adventure Workshop question. Oops, you're probably right. Maybe an admin will move it? Thanks for the opinion. |
| #5squarecircleJul 06, 2008 15:25:48 | Oops, you're probably right. Maybe an admin will move it? Easy mistake in this case. Dropping races isn't going to create any real issues. You could even limit all players to Humans if you really wanted. |
| #6HendrakeJul 07, 2008 1:18:19 | Dropping races isn't going to create any real issues. You could even limit all players to Humans if you really wanted. I considered that as well -- or at least reducing it down to two (Eladrin & Humans)...but I suspect I would be accused of ripping of Brust. |
| #7kadeityJul 27, 2008 16:08:47 | im just going to go ahead and disagree with everyone in this thread. You shouldnt drop a standard race unless you replace it. The reason is that each race gives particular stat bonuses that are good for certain classes. If you dont have a replacement race of the same stat bonuses, youre going to see people pick race/class combinations that favor each other, and people neglect classes that dont have a race that is good for them. HOWEVER, if youre going to go with an all human campaign, i dont see any harm in dropping all the other races. In fact, i think you could even say humans got a +2 to TWO stats rather than just one, and still be ok, because since they are the only race, its still balanced. If i were you, id try and either make up a replacement race for anything i drop, or id go all human. |
| #8morgonraugJul 28, 2008 0:09:31 | You can eliminate whatever you and the game still works, but I would prefer seeing new twists rather than completely scrapping races. Maybe this big "sentient pure evil" warped groups of each of the races, giving you room to create some new varients with wicked-awesome evil powers. - Jeff |
| #9Neutronium_DragonJul 28, 2008 2:33:24 | I'd agree with the above, and suggest that it's probably best to dump the races which are largely "humans with facial doodads" (most of them) and replace them with some of the MM races which are clearly *not* "humans with facial doodads", such as gnolls, kobolds, and warforged. You can get a pretty good assortment of class coverage that way while still making the race lineup look wholly different than is typical of D&D (and fantasy generally). |
| #10squarecircleJul 28, 2008 5:46:19 | im just going to go ahead and disagree with everyone in this thread. Ah, but you forget to mention that ALL classes have good synergy with humans. So as long as humans remain a choice, everything should be good. It should be noted that there are still some builds, such as the tactical warlord, that don't have great synergy with any particular race (except humans). |
| #11glak2Jul 28, 2008 10:16:10 | you definitely should drop some races, it improves the quality of your world. I ALWAYS drop races. How many PC races are there in the fiction that inspires you? King Arthur/Robin Hood: 1 Tolkien: 4 (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit) Starwars: 2 (Human and Wookie) Avatar the Last Airbender: 1 (I think, haven't watched enough yet) Dragon Ball Z: 4 (Human, Saiyan, Half Saiyan, and whatever the green guy was) |
| #12stonehydraJul 28, 2008 12:17:30 | I considered that as well -- or at least reducing it down to two (Eladrin & Humans)...but I suspect I would be accused of ripping of Brust. I had respect for the idea of removing races that were not vital to your game until you said this. Eladrin are nothing more than an over arrogant elf I mean there is no problem with cutting a campaign down to any one playable race or a small number of options; two is bad three is good. And if thus options are human elf and Eladrin you should be hit with a rater large phone book that has elf munchkin scribbled on the cover in black felt tip marker. Now if you balanced that human Eladrin combo with say Dwarf, dragon born, or worefoged. You should be good. Of gust drop the Eladrin for a human only campaign there is nothing wrong with that.![]() |
| #13ambulacetusJul 28, 2008 13:03:48 | There is no problem at all in dropping standard races to alter the feel of the campaign. You said your players don't care, so its especially ok! I've played in all human games before and the worked out fine so dropping tieflings, halflings, and half elves should be ok. (Also, I personally see nothing wrong with humans+Eladrin only either - though I think any combination of races from all dwarves to halflings, minotaur, and githyanki could make an interesting campaign world). |
| #14master-of-puppetsJul 28, 2008 13:10:38 | Starwars: 2 (Human and Wookie) WTF??? what I like from Star wars is the fact that there is almost infinite races well if you mean just the first movie.... and PC-like races... why not? and I agree that you should check what you take in and out, most people likes to have a race that exisit only in your world like winged elf or some of the like... the first two races I'd consider taking away are exactly eladrin and dragonborn as they have monster-like capabilities but if that is exactly what you want to do with your setting... go ahead |
| #15NifftJul 28, 2008 13:23:09 | As long as you keep Humans, all core classes remain viable. I considered that as well -- or at least reducing it down to two (Eladrin & Humans)...but I suspect I would be accused of ripping of Brust. There are worse places to steal from. And I recommend you always steal where it's expedient. Re-inventing the wheel is only fun so many times. Cheers, -- N |
| #16ForgemberJul 28, 2008 13:29:38 | Sounds good to me, If I ever run a 4e game I plan on taking out Eladrin, Dragonborn and Tieflings. |
| #17squarecircleJul 28, 2008 14:54:06 | you definitely should drop some races, it improves the quality of your world. I ALWAYS drop races. How many PC races are there in the fiction that inspires you? The green guy is Piccolo, and he's a Namek. There were other notable Nameks too, such as Kami and Nail. There were actually tons more races in Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z/GT, but none of them made up the "main party," unless you count Uub in GT. |
| #18kadeityAug 02, 2008 6:36:32 | Ah, but you forget to mention that ALL classes have good synergy with humans. So as long as humans remain a choice, everything should be good. humans arent the best choice for many of the classes. they dont get +2 to two. the other features are nice, but sometimes that extra +2 is just superior. |
