| #1thrayn_83Oct 10, 2008 20:34:58 | so i was thinking about running some sort of dragon rider campaign. any ideas on the best way to do this? |
| #2doomsoughtOct 10, 2008 21:57:24 | for 3ed there is a dragon rider class in Draconomicon... but unless the dragons are brainwashed, it is unlikely that you can find that many on a planet willing to be ridden. this must start in 15th level and go up just so the players can compare with the dragons...unless you wish the dragons to be treated somethign like a ship like in the Temeraire series. |

There's also a bit of concern that if you use any of the recent DnD iterations with dragons from the MM, then everybody's riding around on a thing designed to challenge an entire party of their level. It'd become less about the players and more about their mounts. Still, I think this could be made to work. I'd love to hear more about the direction you wanted to go with it. |
| #6thrayn_83Oct 12, 2008 20:42:33 | At the lower lvls, I'm thinking 1-15 or so, the dragons won't have a major role in the campaign. I'm thinking that I'll have the players do solo quests with their dragons as training. Later on in the campaign is when war will break out and my players and their dragons will clash with other riders from an evil empire. A few of the sessions before the war will be with just the dragons and encounters more designed for them, so that the players will know how to use all of their abilities later on. |
| #7frznfuryOct 12, 2008 21:35:38 | So your players will roleplay their characters and their mounts separately? Interesting. In a small party, this would be so awesome... Once they reach a certain level, the young dragons become available, however, the beasts don't gain levels with the party. Either that or they can be scaled back a tad with some custom-designed skills/powers/ability bonuses to be gained later. When the party passes them up by a couple levels, they could come along as backup, no problem. Ah, the epic battles... It really makes me wish the rumors about Pete Jackson doing a Temeraire movie were true... |
| #8Book5Oct 13, 2008 10:01:45 | You could just go with the idea of letting the PCs play two characters... one the dragons and the other the riders. oooohhh - then you could mix it up so that none of the PCs are actually playing the rider and dragon pair ... oh no - they have to play the dragon for another player's rider. It would be neat (a little advanced) and tie the players together more. |
