| #1kangsregimentFeb 01, 2009 8:12:06 | I've been trying to design a dragonrider class as a multiclass for a homebrew campaign inspired by Dragonriders of Pern (NOT the Dragonriders of Pern campaign setting). It's sort of a blend of beastmaster ranger, wizard, and spellscarred as a multiclass. Dragonrider Training Prerequisite: Str 13 or Dex 13, Wis 13. You must have a dragonbond. Benefit: You gain the ability to work with your bonded dragon in combat. You qualify for the Novice Power, Acolyte Power, and Adept Power feats, treating dragonrider as the class into which you have multiclassed. Dragonriders do not follow the normal rules for paragon multiclassing, the dragonrider captain paragon path is used for this purpose. Your dragon uses the following rules, based on its type. Dragon Stats All dragon companions have the following abilities. The follow all of the rules for a ranger's beats companion, except where noted. Fly (glide): While flying, you may not ascend. You automatically descend 2 squares at the end of your turn. You must still spend a move action each turn to fly at least 2 squares, or you crash at the end of your turn. Powered Flight (Move, encounter): The dragon can fly up to its fly speed without the glide restriction. The dragon can use this ability 2/encounter at paragon tier, and 3/encounter at epic tier. Coastal Coastal dragons are large but docile dragons. Their body structure suits them well for swimming, but makes land travel slightly awkward. Coastal Dragon Stats Ability Scores: Strength 16, Constitution 16, Dexterity 12, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 12, Charisma 10 Size: Large Speed: 5 squares, swim 5 squares, fly 5 (glide) Defenses: AC 14 + level, Fortitude 12 + level, Reflex 10 + level, Will 12 + level; resist 5 lightning (resist 10 at paragon, resist 20 at epic) Hit Points: 14 + 8 per level Attack Bonus: Level + 5 Damage: 1d6 Melee Basic Attack: Claw or bite; level + 5 vs. AC; 1d6 + Strength modifier damage. Trained Skills: Endurance, Perception Swamp Swamp dragons are shifty, opportunistic dragons. They often lie beneath the water's surface and ambush prey, like alligators. Swamp Dragon Stats Ability Scores: Strength 14, Constitution 14, Dexterity 14, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 14, Charisma 10 Size: Large Speed: 6 squares (swamp walk), fly 6 (glide) Defenses: AC 14 + level, Fortitude 12 + level, Reflex 12 + level, Will 12 + level; resist 5 acid (resist 10 at paragon, resist 20 at epic) Hit Points: 14 + 8 per level Attack Bonus: Level + 4 Damage: 1d8 Melee Basic Attack: Bite or claw; level + 4 vs. AC; 1d8 + Strength modifier damage. Combat Advantage: When a swamp dragon has combat advantage against a target, it gains a bonus to damage rolls equal to its Wisdom modifier. Trained Skills: Stealth Sylvan Sylvan dragons are smaller, slender dragons. They are the quickest dragons, using their agility to help navigate through dense forests. Sylvan Dragon Stats Ability Scores: Strength 14, Constitution 12, Dexterity 16, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 14, Charisma 10 Size: Large Speed: 6 squares, fly 7 (glide) Defenses: AC 14 + level, Fortitude 11 + level, Reflex 13 + level, Will 12 + level; resist 5 poison (resist 10 at paragon, resist 20 at epic) Hit Points: 14 + 8 per level Attack Bonus: Level + 4 Damage: 1d8 Melee Basic Attack: Claw, bite, or tail slap; level + 4 vs. AC; 1d8 + Dexterity modifier damage. Trained Skills: Athletics, Stealth Tundra Tundra dragons are small but tough dragons. Their thick skin helps insulate them from the cold. Tundra Dragon Stats Ability Scores: Strength 16, Constitution 14, Dexterity 14, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 12, Charisma 10 Size: Large Speed: 6 squares, fly 6 (glide) Defenses: AC 15 + level, Fortitude 12 + level, Reflex 11 + level, Will 10 + level; resist 5 cold (resist 10 at paragon, resist 20 at epic) Hit Points: 14 + 8 per level Attack Bonus: Level + 4 Damage: 1d8 Melee Basic Attack: Claw or bite; level + 4 vs. AC; 1d8 + Strength modifier damage. Opportunity Attacks: A tundra dragon gains a +2 bonus to the attack roll when making opportunity attacks. Trained Skills: Athletics, Endurance Volcanic Volcanic dragons have a stocky, durable frame that makes them much tougher than other dragons. However, they are the less agile. Volcanic Dragon Stats Ability Scores: Strength 16, Constitution 14, Dexterity 12, Intelligence 10, Wisdom 12, Charisma 10 Size: Large Speed: 5 squares, fly 6 (glide) Defenses: AC 13 + level, Fortitude 14 + level, Reflex 10 + level, Will 12 + level; resist 5 fire (resist 10 at paragon, resist 20 at epic) Hit Points: 16 + 10 per level Attack Bonus: Level + 2 Damage: 1d12 Melee Basic Attack: Claw or bite; level + 2 vs. AC; 1d12 + Strength modifier damage. Trained Skills: Athletics, Endurance |
| #2teamfireyleaderFeb 01, 2009 9:10:39 | agenothree. must have power. (love pern)[anyone who doesn't get agenothree try saying it outloud like this {age-en-o-three}] If you really can't work it out: Show HNO3 |
| #3kangsregimentFeb 01, 2009 9:17:16 | Each type of dragon has its own breath weapon based on the environment it lives in. I don't deal with firestones. To clarify: Coastal dragons - lightning Volcanic Dragons - fire Sylvan dragons - poison Swamp dragons - acid Tundra dragons - cold The environment/element pairings are based off of chromatic dragons, because it makes sense to me. |
| #4kangsregimentFeb 02, 2009 11:02:20 | Moved. |
| #5fragsieFeb 02, 2009 11:25:34 | I'm intrigued to see how going between will work. Something to reflect that riders have empathic potential would be cool. Are the dragons in question going to be dragons straight out of the MM, or a new breed that you are going to develop; because the dragons out of the MM (those that are big enough to ride) are going to be way to powerful as animal companions. |

| #7strange_creaturesFeb 03, 2009 5:32:03 | You've got a good idea here. *Bookmarked* |
| #8kangsregimentFeb 03, 2009 6:35:34 | Epic powers will go here. |
| #9kangsregimentFeb 03, 2009 6:53:55 | An example heroic tier feat for Dragonriders: Aerial Reflexes Prerequisites: Dragonrider Benefit: When your dragon uses its Powered Flight ability, it gains a +1 feat bonus to AC and Reflex until the start of your next turn. If you are riding your dragon, you gain these bonuses as well. |
| #10kangsregimentFeb 05, 2009 9:22:40 | Another heroic tier feat for Dragonriders: Breath Avoidance Prerequisites: Dragonrider, Dex 13 Benefit: You may choose to avoid targeting yourself with your area of effect powers that originate from your dragon. |

| #12kangsregimentFeb 05, 2009 14:32:24 | Heroic tier feats will go here. |
| #13kangsregimentFeb 06, 2009 13:09:08 | Paragon tier feats will go here. |
| #14kangsregimentFeb 06, 2009 15:38:28 | Moved. |
| #15strange_creaturesFeb 08, 2009 4:08:43 | Very well written. I would allow this (Game wise, Role playing it in would be awkward.) into one of my Games. Good Job :D |
| #16fragsieFeb 08, 2009 8:50:53 | Example paragon tier feat: I don't know if an at-wil fly speed is balanced for a PC even at paragon tier, perhaps a feat that allows you to use powered flight an extra time each encounter, make it so you can take the feat once each tier? |
| #17kangsregimentFeb 08, 2009 10:37:32 | Epic level feats will go here. |
| #18kangsregimentFeb 20, 2009 15:07:14 | Removed because the info is no longer applicable. |
| #19kangsregimentMay 22, 2009 7:32:45 | I've decided that having a dragonrider multiclass would be a much better system. I'm updating my previous posts to reflect this. |
| #20kangsregimentMay 22, 2009 10:06:02 | Rules updated, with level 1 and level 2 powers. |
| #21kangsregimentMay 26, 2009 13:51:24 | Heroic tier powers done, reorganized some posts. |
| #22dalorbloodmaneMay 26, 2009 14:00:43 | Dragonrider Training How would you go about getting a dragonbond? |
| #23kangsregimentMay 26, 2009 14:03:53 | It's a fluff requirement, much like the one for Spellscarred. |
| #24dalorbloodmaneMay 26, 2009 16:35:17 | Can a beast master ranger multiclass as a dragon rider? (thus letting them have 2 pets) |
| #25kangsregimentMay 27, 2009 7:58:04 | Can a beast master ranger multiclass as a dragon rider? (thus letting them have 2 pets) Technically yes, though I would not advise it. My two greatest concerns with being a beastmaster ranger with this multiclass are being action deprived, and cluttering up the battlefield. Remember, these dragons take up as much space as a horse, and half of the powers require it to be in melee or close range, competing with other melee characters for space. I would like to point out that a beastmaster can already get an extra "pet" by multiclassing into shaman, so this isn't new. |
| #26kangsregimentMay 27, 2009 9:07:08 | Paragon powers and dragonrider captain paragon path finished. |
| #27dalorbloodmaneMay 27, 2009 15:03:20 | Paragon path looks good (im horrible balancer so dont go by what i say). Are the example feats you put up still gona be used or are you making new ones for the multiclassed version of the dragonrider? |
| #28kangsregimentMay 27, 2009 15:12:39 | I am going to keep the feats I have posted, with the exception of the racial feats with no information. These I will fold into the present racial feats, since people who go full into the multiclass will be a little feat-starved. I'd like to note that none of the powers or paragon path class features are original - they are merely renamed and reflavored versions of existing powers and features. (The paragon path uses the framework of spellscarred savant, with some feral spirit and borderlands marshal thrown in) The weapon-based powers and dragon-only powers are mostly reflavored beastmaster ranger, and the elemental-type powers are mostly spellscarred or wizard. |
| #29dalorbloodmaneMay 30, 2009 13:38:35 | The dragons are 1 square wide and 2 squares long? I don see information on that anywhere. When you see large you usually think 2x2 not 1x2. Also is the coastal dragon medium (1x1) for a reason? |
| #30kangsregimentMay 30, 2009 14:19:55 | Apparently horses are 2x2, which is so ridiculously stupid I will not comment on it further. |
| #31dalorbloodmaneMay 30, 2009 16:17:45 | Since the dragon is 2x2, would that mean they have a reach of 2? |
| #32kangsregimentMay 30, 2009 16:35:53 | No, Large creatures that are long have a reach of 1. |
| #33dalorbloodmaneMay 31, 2009 19:16:10 | Would you mind consolidating everything (feats, paragon path etc.) into the first post (or your first 2 posts)? This would reduce the need to search all the posts to find what you want. |
| #34hyrikorJun 29, 2011 22:24:02 | I am still following your multiclass, any chance at an update? |
| #35stargazer_dragonJun 30, 2011 0:33:10 | would also be cool to add hybrid, also semas like the multiclass could make a super good canidate for a theme though feat works to |
