| #1kuguApr 13, 2009 19:24:25 | Alright, My friend wants to play a dragoon type character, one like the Final fantasy series ... FF11 to be exact but i'm sure he'd be happy with whatever as long as its close, problem is I don't have any books besides the core books, I however might be able to afford one. If I was making a dragoon type character, what book would I need? Also any ideas for feats and such to flesh this out? Anyways back to work before the boss man catches me :P |
| #2deadlogicApr 13, 2009 21:26:09 | Rather than create something entirely new how about taking whats there and applying it creatively like making a dragonborn beastmaster ranger with a lizard companion and multi-classing as a fighter or warlord and as you progress to paragon go for longarm marshal, scion of arkhosia, or dragon marshal if you multiclass warlord or if multi class fighter kensai, inner dragon, or scale breaker. |
| #3alumanApr 13, 2009 21:52:25 | Click on Homebrew Classes, and find F6Shadow's part in it, click on his link to his classes, there is the best homebrew Dragoon you are likely to find. |
| #4matthewswiftApr 13, 2009 21:58:44 | Try Martial Power Or a subscription to Insider since the compendium includes every book and then some. 30 bucks for 1 book, or 6 months worth of info. Cheers |
| #5thegreatgalstaffApr 13, 2009 22:30:46 | isn't a dragoon just a guy who wears scale armor and uses a polearm? I stop playing 5 mins into 12 so I going with the older Dragoons of FF. have you ever thought of just having him become a fighter and take the polearm powers from MP, and how about this.... (its homebrewed) instead of getting weapon tallent or tempus tech or battlerager viggor as a fighter class feature give him this... Dragoon's Jump you must be wielding a polearm and must be trained in Athletics. once per encounter as a move action you may jump into the air and land in a unoccupied and safe square, this basically allow you shift up to 1/2 your speed, may go through enemies (but not end there) if you hit with the a attack after the jump it deals a extra 1[W] damage, your turn ends after this attack. yes I know its broken and over powered but its only one time per encounter and it has some of that FF tactics feel to it, I would not allow them to use furious assult with this feature because it basically would allow them to do 3[w] with a at-will one time per battle. other than that have him pick fighter powers that are improved by weilding a polearm. and boom you have a dragoon. |
| #6deadlogicApr 13, 2009 23:02:22 | yeah but he said ff11 and dragoons in that have a familiar. |
| #7alumanApr 13, 2009 23:35:54 | Swordmage with a halberd+Familiar feat from AP (when released). |
| #8deadlogicApr 14, 2009 12:40:49 | Swordmage with a halberd+Familiar feat from AP (when released). swordmage use swords as implements so it would have to be a glave and the ff11 familiar is a small dragon |
| #9nephallimApr 14, 2009 14:46:40 | I'd just do a beastmaster ranger with a lizard companion and a polearm for a weapon. 'Jumping' can be added as flavor to dailies or any power that involves you shifting. |
| #10alumanApr 15, 2009 1:59:42 | swordmage use swords as implements so it would have to be a glave and the ff11 familiar is a small dragon No Swordmage uses Light and Heavy blades as implements. Which the halberd is. (Or maybe I am thinking of Glaive, either way, one of the polearm+heavyblade options). Or since you know you happen to be the DM state 'Dragoons are like Swordmages only they use polearms as implements.' Then the only real hurdle is his AC will be slightly lower due to 2H weapon, though technically its a free action to release with one hand. |
| #11backstabbistApr 15, 2009 11:08:41 | huh I thought a Dragoon was a guy that rides around on a horse but gets off to fire his musket (crossbow), then gets back on his horse to get away from guys that want 'easy "archer" kills' |
| #12crossbladeApr 15, 2009 11:15:16 | That would be in real life, backstabbist. This is in regards to FINAL FANTASY, where there was/is a class that wears heavy armor, uses spears, has a special attack based on jumping high into the sky onto enemies... and in FF11, has a small dragon familiar. The class isn't hard to make in 3.5, just need the weapon and armor proficiencies, a pseudodragon familiar and either/both Spring Attack and Pounce feats. |
| #13backstabbistApr 15, 2009 11:33:19 | OIC Differnt 'dragoon's |
| #14thegreatgalstaffApr 15, 2009 13:51:45 | Ok, take my suggestion for the jump ability and say he gets the familiar feat for free. there he has a familiar that grants a bonus to him but he is not focused on it like a beastmaster ranger, unless dragoons were focused around the Familiar attacking and you looking pretty with a overcompensating blade at the end of a very long stick, then go with the beast master. I would make him be a dragonborn just because most dragoons had a dragon breath ability. soo lets see the check list uses polearm... Check uses heavy armor...Check Has jump ability... Check Has Breath weapon... Check Has familiar... Check attacks in melee... Check Has Decent HP... Check Has High AC and fort... Check Has special polearm attacks... Check Limit Breaks... I will have to get back to you on this I think we have a green light for a dragoon fighter it fits almost perfectly. |
| #15masenkenApr 15, 2009 16:13:07 | Beast Master with a Raptor (it flies) (reskinned as a dragon), snatch up a polearm, scalemail, if you choose to be a dragonborn, flavor that it's making the breath attack and not you, if it's pulling some other effect, again flavor it from the creature... also trying to keep said creature within at least 2 squares of you at all times, since in XI the thing was basically always strapped to your back. Make mad high jump checks with a number of powers because you can, and have at it |

If I was making a dragoon type character, what book would I need? Also any ideas for feats and such to flesh this out? Anyways back to work before the boss man catches me :P Paladin MC sorcerer, and pick up the familiar feat from arcane power. From the spoilers I've seen, there's a dragon familiar that lets you, once per encounter, to use a close arcane power from them instead of you. Once per encounter, your familiar can use a "dragon breath" skinned power. A paladin gets the heavy armor, and the polearms. MC sorcerer qualifies you for MC sorcerer, and that gives you the familiar feat. At level 4, take the encounter power swap feat, and grab one of the sorcerer close powers. Or, fighter/shaman. The fighter gives you the heavy armor and weapons, and shaman gives you a spirit companion that you call your dragon pet (mine was called Cerulean--I was a tarutaru!). Granted, the spirit doesn't get close or area attacks, but it does do status effects, and that's what the FFXI dragoon's pet did, IIRC. For the above classes, I choose classes that have complementary ability scores, so you can take, and use well, the powers from the second class. TBP |

| #18Chameleon-XAug 05, 2009 14:47:54 | You could do one of the above suggestions, and give him this power in exchange for one of his class features: |
| #19generalhenryAug 05, 2009 19:46:24 | I half way put together a class a while back here's a workable version http://www.enworld.org/wiki/index.php/Dragoon and I've currently working making an improved version http://www.dandwiki.com/w/index.php?title=Dragoon_(4e_Class) (and I'd love feed back on the newer version) |
| #20HebitsuikazaAug 05, 2009 21:35:06 | Real Dragoons were basically rifleman who got to where they needed to be by horseback. It's kind of strange that Final Fantasy decided to make them into jumping halberders. Then again-- Musketeers were also rifleman, the type of rifle is even in the name... yet now they are more associated with fencing with a rapier than using a musket. |
