I also like the Dresden novels with the Summer/Winter conflict and I think it maps well to the D&D setting. I plan to bait the characters into choosing sides and thus creating an imbalance that they must fix before it destroys the Nentir Vale. So finally my question.... has anyone here added in the Summer/Winter conflict as a Fey conflict that is battled out in the core world? What plot hooks did you use, and what did you find worked or didn't work for the players? Thanks! |

In this adventure, there is a conflict between the fey Summer Queen and the Winter King that the players become involved in in order to protect a city in the mortal world. I haven't run it yet myself (though I plan to use 75% of it in my next adventure). Its all about reputation. That is, the fey nobility are much too powerful for the players to just go and kill to get their way and so they need to build up their reputation amongst the nobility of the feywild in order to actually discuss matters with the King/Queen. |

I have the core adventures and will be mixing those in with home brew stuff. I've started them off in Harkenwold with the adventure from the 1st starter set (the blue box) and tied that into Kobold hall. Almost finished with that, and my plan is to have the white dragon tied to a winter court princess. How they deal with the dragon will determine the first alignment of the group and the winter court. I will certainly try to have them working for both courts at the same time. See if I can pull of the complexity. On a related topic.... has anyone used the Shadowfell similar to the Nevernever for transit routes between locations on the core world? I was thinking the players would have to figure out how the vampires can travel far distances during the day, and they'd have to travel to the Shadowfell to disrupt the travel and thus limit the vampire threat in the core world. |

The FW and SF material in DMG and elsewhere both support your network idea. In one campaign I've played in, the DM presented the Feywild and the Shadowfell as the same place and the line between them was a constant and literal battleground. There were Eladrin strongholds guarding the border and the shadow hordes would repeatedly assualt them. I liked it as it was easy to see why eladrin are masters of sword and magic and why eladrin tactical warlords are the coolest thing ever! |

The inspiration came from the two primal/nature characters in my group (Shaman, Warden), and that they naturally chose fire and cold respectively. Naturally I thought of Summer and Winter. The only change to KOtS I made was to the power circle outside of Irontooth's waterfall cave. The mechanics were the same, but when the shaman used a fire power on the 1/2 I designated Winter, he felt extreme rage. He used a similar fire power on the summer side, and felt elation. Strictly RP. When they leave the cave after dispatching Irontooth, there will be 2 weapons suspended in the circle. One from winter, one from summer, catered to the respective characters (as if they are selecting their Knights). The long and the short of it is, Winter and Summer are working together (GASP!) to prevent the encroaching abberations from the Far Realm. Doesn't mean they may not eventually try to take advantage of the temporary alliance, but it might prove for some mild summers and winters in the meantime... 4 Elemental temples act as focal points to create an energy barrier for the BBEG (an imprisoned abberation), and the characters will be working to sustain the barriers (after inadvertantly destroying the earth temple). Haven't thought much past this...but the air temple will be filled with funnel gusts of wind and monks that use them to fly around the battlefield. Temporary aerial(sp?) combat? I think so... Earth/Fire = Summer Water/Wind = Winter |

I had almost forgotten about the Summer/Winter Knights.... now that would be fun, baiting them into accepting the role of the Knight. Trying to figure out how to "unaccept" being the knight would make for a few adventures in itself. |
