Drinking Contest!

Appologies if this has been asked before, I tried searching and wasn't able to come up with much.

Anyways, I had the idea of having my PC's trying to gain the assistance/knowledge of a dwarf NPC residing in the local bar. Only, he won't agree to help the party unless they can beat him in a drinking contest.

I envision it being based somewhat like a skill check, using Endurance to fight off the effects of the alcohol, Healing to do the same, and maybe Intimidate or Streetwise to throw the dwarf off his game.

For every success against a DC, say 5-10 to start, to signify starting out fairly easily, I thought to raise the DC by 2 for every 'drink' after the first one that the party keeps down. Eventually either the party or the dwarf 'drinking champion' will lose the contest and the story continues.

Instead of 'failures' having adverse affects against the story, I was thinking about having failures accumulate to adverse affects to the PC's. For example, after one failure, maybe the person is dazed, blinded after 3, and after 5 unconsious and the contest is over. The ill effects would dissipate after an extended rest. Maybe on a critical miss (a natural 1) the player would become poisoned...

To spice things up, maybe a failed intimidate check (or other random event) causes a bar fight to break out, so the party is essentially going to battle drunk (dazed, blinded, unconsious etc) Total skill check failure would event in the players waking up in prison the next morning.

Anyways, just my very (very) rudimentary idea on how to implement a drinking contest into a pre-dungeon encounter. Let me know if I'm WAY off base or not.

Though not 4th ed. City Scape had some loose rules for drinking contests, you could look at those for a start. Btw like the rudimentary idea of making it a bit more than an endurance check.

I think this could turn into a pretty nice skill challenge if thought out well enough.
