| #1coyote_skyheartAug 16, 2008 21:34:24 | I've read some of the threads regarding the issue of the missing two weapon dedicated fighter. My player is a fighter converting his character to 4E with a two-bladed sword. I'm in the camp that the 'stickiness' of the fighter is important fluff to preserve, and that he should be able to keep his sword. So he is not going to change into a ranger. Version One "Borrow from Ranger" Modify the feats slightly so it strips the nature and tracking aspects / options. Hunter's quarry scales damage while twin strike doesn't. That's why you see the bonus damage in the later feats. I originally wrote this as a bonus encounter power, but swapping out the at-will seems fair. Yes I realize that twin strike is a lot better for ranger when ranger uses hunter's quarry with it, but the power of marking two foes isn't that bad for fighter either.

The Ranger is set up perfectly for two weapon fighting. I'm guessing that the reason that you want to make these changes is, as many others, you think "TWF Fighter", and beleive that the Fighter class should accomodate that. It does not. TWF is the Rangers trick now. I would suggest playing a Ranger and simply saying "My character is a fighter". Class title does not equal job description. If you want heavier armour, just take some feats. You no longer get huge penalties for being a Ranger with armour. |

It helps, but it isn't the same thing. Especially since most 2-weapon Rangers tend to take that and the 2-weapon defense feats anyhows. I agree with the suggestion that you just make a ranger. Making a Fighter into a Ranger-level Two Weapon Combatant has the potential to break due to the Class Abilities that Fighters get. |

Especially since most 2-weapon Rangers tend to take that and the 2-weapon defense feats anyhows. It just depends on what he's going for. If he wasn't the "stickiness" of the fighter, then going with the actual fighter class and picking up the TWF feat works just fine; the feat represents florentine-style TWF and can be reflavored any way the user wishes. A flat +1 (almost) to DPR is nothing to sniff at. It's been shown in other threads that TWF is viable for the fighter as it puts him in between the sword-n-board build and the THF build. It's a hybrid build, it just requires a couple of feats to burn, which is no big deal in 4e. The other option is to multiclass, which is also viable. |

(PS, has anyone else thought it would be awesome if there was a feat that changed the Half-elve's racial power back into an at-will? Don't know what tier that would be, but it would rock.) |
| #8sphynx01Aug 17, 2008 9:51:05 | Such a Feat would have to apply across the board, all Multi-Class powers included, and would mess up the power levels of the game I think. It's always the case that any 'outside' Power drops a tier to the next time frame AtWill - Encounter - Daily. |

It's always the case that any 'outside' Power drops a tier to the next time frame AtWill - Encounter - Daily. Why would it have to apply across the board? There are plenty of racial feats that apply only to one race. It could simply have the requirements: Half-elf, Dilettante racial power. And it would apply very specifically to Dilettante. |
| #10jaxgaretAug 17, 2008 18:40:49 | I've posted this before many a time, here goes again. The TWF/TWD feats represent the majority of RL TWF, that of not attacking with both weapons simultaneously, but rather using one in an offensive manner and the other in a defensive manner. The TWF powers of the Ranger represent the minority of RL TWF, that of attacking with both weapons simultaneously. The latter discipline requires much more training in that style to be used effectively in battle conditions, and so makes more sense to be represented by a class rather than feats. |
| #11wyld_mutationAug 17, 2008 18:45:50 | ^That is an excellent way to put it.^ Use the second version if you're dead-set. You don't need to prevent marking. Just don't add ability modifier damage. Have the second feat allow the damage from ability modifier. The first feat has a requirement of 17 dexterity (15 is relatively easy to get.) The high requirement reflects its difficulty. The second feat should require 19 dexterity. |
| #12makeshiftwingsAug 17, 2008 18:55:00 | Here's another thing you could try: make the two-bladed sword a superior weapon that can be used as either a Greatsword or as two Longswords. Maybe require a minor action to shift your grip. That way you can have him be a Two-Handed fighter getting the most out of his fighter powers, while also getting the most out of any Ranger powers he picks up through multiclassing. |
| #13wyld_mutationAug 17, 2008 19:22:42 | ![]() You are the master! |
| #14coyote_skyheartAug 23, 2008 12:55:43 | Thank you. That was helpful. |
| #15Lord_VentnorAug 23, 2008 13:03:25 | The high crit might be overkill, though. I mean greatsword + two long swords with +3 proficiency is superior already. |
| #16rburchAug 23, 2008 13:37:37 | Another vote for the go Ranger Multiclass fighter crowd. And if you aren't set on a race, choose 1/2 elf and pick a power from the fighter class. |
