| #1OskarOisinsonJul 20, 2009 18:24:31 | Hey so, I've been working on some homebrew stuff for a campaign setting that kind of meshes Eberron with Dark Sun via time travel and had to come up with Elan and Thri-Kreen racial stats. I'd like some suggestion on how to balance the Elan here. It looks alright to me (but I designed it) so I'd like some feedback. Overpowered? Underpowered? Wrong? What? Elans: Racial Traits Avg. Height: 5’-5” – 6’1” Avg. Weight: 125-200 Ability Scores: +2 to Intelligence; +2 to Wisdom or Charisma Size: Medium Speed: 6 squares Vision: Normal Languages: Common Skill Bonuses: +2 Diplomacy, +2 Insight Aberration: You are an aberration and are subject to effects and conditions that affect aberrations. Naturally Psionic: You gain 1 extra power point at first level. Psionic Repletion: An Elan can sustain their body without food, water or sleep. Trance: You do not sleep but you must spend at least 4 hours in a state of inactivity to gain the benefit of an extended rest. Racial Powers: You have the Psionic Resilience and Psionic Resistance racial powers. However, you may only use one of them during a given encounter. Psionic Resilience: Encounter * Augmentable, Psionic Elan Racial Power Immediate Interrupt Personal Effect: You gain temporary hit points equal to your Intelligence score. Augment 1: As above but you also gain regeneration 5. Regeneration increases to 10 at 11th level and 15 at 21st level. Psionic Resistance: Encounter * Augmentable, Psionic Elan Racial Power Immediate Interrupt Personal Effect: You choose 1 defense and gain a a bonus to that defense equal to your Intelligence modifier until the end of your next turn. Sustain Minor: You retain this bonus to defense. Augment 1: As above but additionally, you gain a +2 to all defenses until the end of the encounter. |
| #2Crimson_ConcertoJul 20, 2009 19:08:13 | Naturally Psionic: You gain 1 extra power point at each tier. (I don't think this breaks anything as is. Assuming you chose a psionic class, i.e. Psion, this would, I'm assuming, allow you to essentially gain an extra encounter power use via augmentation and it scales as the levels increase.) I'm fairly certain this is very overpowered. There's a specific reason they skipped giving the Psion one power point to break the expected pattern. As for the rest, those are very relatively underpowered uses for Power Points compared to augmenting powers. Really, I would just drop the Power Point dependency for the racial traits entirely. Just say they plain don't need to eat or drink for Repletion, and make Resilience and Resistance into two racial powers, one of which can be used per encounter Drow-style. |
| #3skyhoofJul 20, 2009 19:55:26 | Oh, this isn't stats for a fun but mentally deficient bard. Never mind, then. |
| #4vebrandssonJul 20, 2009 19:58:16 | I'm with crimson on this one, he pretty much stated it, its probably overpowered as everything to give a psionic character more power points as that would translate into basically bonus encounter class powers, which no race should get. I mean with a total of 18 power points a psion basically has 3 level 27 encounter powers and a half augmented paragon tier encounter, which is incredible. Why not turn the psionic resistance into normal psychic resistance like the teifling fire resist or the deva radiant/necrotic resist also while your at it? |
| #5OskarOisinsonJul 21, 2009 7:33:53 | I appreciate the input on power points, I was worried about that. As far as the resistance becoming a psychic resistance... for me that's a little far removed from what the ability used to be able to do. I know 4e is not 3e but I've never really liked the races that get random resistance X because I feel that racial traits on a whole should be more stand-alone benefits and resistance to X is always situational, just like having a different type (aberration, immortal, etc.) For this reason, I've just always felt the resistance thing was a little cheesy. I'll have to look over power points again (I unfortunately did not have them available to me when I wrote this originally because of the stupid split format between the dragon article and the compendium update) so I wasn't able to compare exactly how much of an advantage those extra power points gave. I might try toning it back to just 1 extra power point and see if that works better. If not, I might try what was suggested about making each thing a racial power. It might preserve the psionic flavor of the 3.5 version if I could make them powers that have an augment cost of their own or a silly good augment with a feat but that's just a thought... |
| #6kethlanJul 23, 2009 10:33:20 | The racial powers are immediate interrupt, but what do they interrupt? You need to add a trigger. The regeneration seems a little powerful to me. The fighter has a daily power to gain regeneration only while they are bloodied. I like the variable ability score modifications. I'm still not sure about the extra power point. It may be too powerful, but I'm not sure yet. |
| #7theplaneswalkerJul 23, 2009 10:56:27 | This is a poorly done conversion of the Elan, first off elans are not charismatic, second like someone mentioned before the extra pp is overpowered... what i suggest you do is to make the Elan as a heritage thing like they did with the Dhampir or to review your race carefully and use other races like the revenant and the deva who have kinda the same fluff. |
| #8RustmonsterJul 23, 2009 12:45:00 | I know 4e is not 3e but I've never really liked the races that get random resistance X because I feel that racial traits on a whole should be more stand-alone benefits and resistance to X is always situational, just like having a different type (aberration, immortal, etc.) For this reason, I've just always felt the resistance thing was a little cheesy. You didn't include a resistance because you think racial features shouldn't be situational, but also decided to situationally give them extra encounter powers based on if they choose the right class? |
| #9Crimson_ConcertoJul 23, 2009 13:01:41 | Okay, back to check on the revisions... 1) The bonus Power Point is still probably overpowered. 2) Resistance and Reliance both need triggers or else you should make them Free actions. 3) You are trying way too hard to force them into psionic classes. Stop it. Remove that augments from the racial powers. 4) Speaking of which, racial powers never have power source keywords. Remove "Psionic" from they keywords. 5) Resistance should not be sustainable. That is definitely overpowered. And I don't even get what you think you were doing with the racial powers. You do realize that an encounter power with an augment makes like no sense, right? The Psion class preview has at-will powers with augments. Putting an encounter resource on an encounter power does not follow logically. But I just feel like I need to say this again: Stop trying to make them so Psionic! Pigeon-holing races into specific classes or roles is bad and unarguably contrary to the stated racial design philosophies for this edition. elans are not charismatic Actually, this isn't necessarily true. While they did get -2 CHA last edition, that doesn't mean much, because -2 CHA is always what they went with when they wanted to penalize an ability score but couldn't figure out what. I mean, just look at the Dwarf. :P Conceptually, there was no particular reason for the Elan ever to have gotten a CHA penalty. In fact, the CHA bonus here is probably appropriate enough, as Elan are a very mentally powerful race with great willpower and mental capabilities. Remember that CHA doesn't mean in D&D what it means in real life, so pointing to that really just isn't a valid criticism of the race. If you do want some valid reason to criticize the race, there are already plenty of those, so you don't need to try so hard. |
| #10greyeagleJul 23, 2009 20:03:40 | Psionic Resilience and Psioninc Resistance are both WAY too strong. On Resilience you need to reduce the THP to Intelligence modifier, and get rid of or reduce the Regeneration, if you reduce it reduce it to 1 or 2. This is better then the Longtooth shifter's racial power as it stands. Resistance: A bonus equal to your Int modifier to a defense as a sustain minor? Per encounter? Are you serious here? I like to think your joking, so there we are. 1/ encounter, + Int modifier bonus to 1 defense, lasts till the end of your nex turn is an excellent racial power. I assume that you are trying to shovel the Elan into Psion, so both of those racial powers are incredibly strong for that class. |
| #11theplaneswalkerJul 23, 2009 20:54:22 | Okay, back to check on the revisions... my point still stands, the fluff and the mechanics of the elan in 3.5 back my opinion, and yes i know charisma does not mean in D&D what it does in real life yet charisma is the key ability for every skill related to socializing, and despite the elan efforts to blend in, they still come out as odd... so please keep your mocking comments towards me to yourself. ![]() |
| #12Crimson_ConcertoJul 23, 2009 20:59:00 | I wasn't mocking you. I was just disagreeing with you. :P EDIT: Reading back on it again though, I can see how it could have been interpreted that way, so I do apologize. ![]() |
