I am creating a new campaign and have the story plotted out but need to build encounters. I plan on taking this campaign from 1st lvl to 30th lvl. So for a group of 5 players can someone point me to a table or can we create one that outlines how many average encounters should be planned for each level?

I realize that this will be general and not exact. I just want to plot out an outline so that I can then fill in the blanks as they adventure. No railroading here just need to plan.

About 8-10 encounters per level is average (per book). Eh, I just did something like

Level 1:
Kobold Lair
A
B
C
Goblin Tribe
A
B
C
D
Random Encounter
A
B

I like this recommendation from the DMG (pg 104):

  • One encounter "1 level below the party's level"
  • Three encounters "at the party's level"
  • Three encounters "1 level above the party's level"
  • One encounter "3 levels above the party's level" (boss)
  • One major quest XP reward

This list is especially handy because it does not specify whether these are combat or non-combat encounters, thus giving you more flexibility. I hope I could provide what you are looking for.

Thanks I don't know how I missed that. That is is exactly the type of thing I need...
