Synopsis: The PCs are trying to break into a prison that's been overrun by the inmates, turned loose by the city's vengeance-obsessed lawkeeper. They're on the warpath trying to bring him to justice, and along the way they have to help the guardians restore order. They sneak in through some tunnels, but arrive in the bowels of the prison.

Encounter: Some ne'er-do-wells are patrolling the entrance to the tunnel, having heard about the secret entrance somewhere in the lower levels while they themselves were incarcerated there. Sometime during the fight, the horrific denizens of the prison's dungeon comes looking for food. My concept is some brutes and artillery to start, and then open up a second front when a black ooze comes along.

I guess the monsters should ideally have some forced movement to knock the PCs into the path of the ooze.

The Heroes: Four level 7 PCs (a ranger, a warlock, a fighter, and a wizard).

Please let me know what monsters you think would be appropriate for this. Or any adventures that include some comparable encounters. Or if you have a better concept.

Depends on how high or low fantasy your campaign is. My campaign is paranoid, laughable and ridiculous. Were it me, I would break the monsters down into prison gangs, and have them spring out dressed in DoC orange jumpsuits, covered in tattoos - sort of like Oz meets Narnia.

Three gnolls and a troll aren't very interesting - but three gnolls and a troll think they're in the **** Brotherhood, and armed with shivs is interesting.

The occassional supermax prisoner that all the others avoid wouldn't go amiss, either. Maybe a Mad Wraith called "Mofa" or something.

Try this:

The South Side Swarm:

Dozens of small humanoid minions. Mostly goblins, xvarts, the odd kobold and even a couple of halflings. Always go round in large groups. Have harmony rune tattoos.

Dos Locos

Bada$$ gnoll clawfighters backed up with either a troll or a hill giant. Lots of tattoos and earrings in left ears.

Borovka

Armenian-mob themed underdark denizens that have blue or orange hair, depending on whether they're drow or duergar. Notorious for recruiting dumb monsters like carrion crawlers and slimes into their gang.

Human Race

Humans supremacist prison gang, mostly ex-adventurers. Have controllers and leaders. Lots of shaved heads and goatee beards.

A three or four-way battle in a prison yard would be pretty cool. Especially if the party needs to make allies to get through. A bunch of PCs that have loads of prison gang tattoos would be pretty funny.

Prison gangs have existed for just about as long as they've had prisons. In a world with different races it would be even worse. As Pratchett said once "Racism has been abandoned in favor of speciesism, which is much more fun. Black and white cooperate to gang up on green." Would be very interesting if there's different races in the party, what with some members not being "welcome" with certain groups.

Also, I've got one more group to add:

Sons of the Abyss:
A group of infernal/dark pact warlock Dwarvs that have pleged alegiance to the nasty things living under mountains. They wear black leather jackets with runes stitched on them and are lead by an Azer named Rocky Grave.
