So I was looking through compendium and not finding anything useful to give a ranger as an artifact so I wrote ths little ditty up.  Please Let me know what you think.  Feel free to ignore the flavor, I'm just looking for a mechanics idea.

Wrath of Tanamache                               Epic Level

Owen Tanamache’s Greatbow has been with him for an eternity, some say it was a gift, others, a curse, but now for some unfathomable reason, you possess the item that has tormented him to greatness.

The Wrath of Tanamache is a +5 Greatbow with the following powers and properties.

Enhancement: Attack rolls and damage rolls

Critical +1d6 per plus

Distance 30/60

Power (Daily * Martial): Free action.  You gain combat advantage against targets that are at least 12 squares away.  This effect lasts until end of encounter.

Goals of the Wrath of Tanamache

Continue to Torment Owen.

Be reunited with Owen if lost.

Be carried by a ranger that it feels is worthy of its time and energy.

Roleplaying the Wrath of Tanamache

The bow communicates silently with it’s wielder pointing out battle strategies and best places to have combat advantage.   It’s all about quick and dirty combat, get in, take out your mark, and get out of there.

Concordance

Starting Score                                                           5

Owner gains a level                                          +1d6

Owner is a Ranger                                                 +1

Owner fells a quarry of 3 levels higher than it  (max 1/day)   +1

Owner is bloodied by a melee attack (max 1/encounter)     -1

Pleased (16-20):  “You’re good at this game, prepare yourself for truly great things.”

The Bow’s enhancement bonus increases to +7.

The Wielder’s Quarry Damage increases by one die.

Satisfied (12-15): “Not bad fledgling, however you’ve still a ways to go before gods and primordials respect you.”

The Bow’s enhancement bonus increases to +6.

The Bow gains the weapon property Brutal 1.

Power (Encounter * Martial): Immediate Reaction.  Trigger: You use Twin Strike through this bow.  Effect: You may choose to use one of the dice rolled from your twin strike for both attacks.

Normal (5-11): “Well you’re not him, but I suppose you’ll do… have we met before?”

The bow is judgmental against its new owner but grants some ability anyway.

Unsatisfied (1-4) “God you suck at this… Ranged combat what part or RANGED don’t you understand?!?”

The bow loses all properties and powers becoming a Magic Greatbow +4 (as listed in PHB)

Angered (0 or lower) “#$%$&^%*%^$!!%$#$%^$&^#$^%@@#%@#$%#^@#”

The bow loses all properties and powers becoming a Magic Greatbow +3 (as listed in the PHB)

You continue to lose favor with the bow and it deals you 3 damage every time you shoot it and miss.  You lose one healing surge at the end of each combat if you didn’t use the bow during combat.  You are not allowed to draw other ranged weapons.

Moving On

The Wrath of Tanamache is reunited with Owen leaving you and it takes your highest level magic item with it(If angered)

Or…

The Wrath of Tanamache is reunited with Owen leaving behind an enchanted greatbow of your choice equivalent to it’s current Enhancement Bonus or lower.  If at a +7, you may choose to have a +7 Magic Greatbow, but otherwise must choose a Greatbow with a +6 magical enhancement

For +7, it should be at Transcendent level (score of 21+). +7 is an insanely high-powered weapon, so you'd be best off adding in Transcendent level for the +7 state.
