| #1drackcoveApr 11, 2009 22:26:27 | My race that i've been using at my table for a few years converted to 4ed please post comments and thoughts. I am trying to make this race appealing, balanced, and playable. Erumail Arcane Lizardmen in search of a new and greater challenges Height: 5'10"- 6'6" Weight: 170- 260lbs Abilities: +2 Constitution +2 Intelligence Size: Medium Speed: 6 squares Vision: Normal Skills: +2 athletics, +2 Arcana Gloryhunter: You gain a +1 racial bonus to attack rolls made on surprise rounds and on the first round of combat. Magic Born- When using arcana checks for arcane knowledge or detect magic rolls you may roll twice and take either result. Reckless power- you can use the Reckless power racial power once per encounter. Reckless power--------------------Erumail racial power Summoning your inner reserves of eldritch might your send your enemy flying though it leaves you vulnerable Encounter free action------------------------personal trigger: you hit a target Effect: you deal 1d8 extra damage and push the target 2 squares. the next attack against you before your next turn as combat advantage I'm more interested in seeing if this is balanced than if you like it, if you want to know more fluff can be provided. |

Abilities: +2 Constitution +2 Intelligence They boost two different NADs, which is good. Constitution is never completely wasted, but it's almost never a primary stat either. Intelligence is useful for some builds, but a dump stat for many others. Overall, solid. Primary/secondary: Hellock, Staffizard, Shielding Swordmage Both secondaries: Bard, Invoker, Shaman No important stats: Rogue, Sorcerer. Clerics, Rangers, and Paladins could use the CON. Size: Medium Meh, average. Lack of low-light vision could hurt, especially since their Gloryhunter triggers off surprise. At least they're not Small or anything. Skills: +2 Athletics, +2 Arcana Arcana synergizes nicely with the racial feature. Athletics is useful... unfortunately most Arcane classes either don't train in it, dump Strength, or both. Dragon Sorcerers will love it. Swordmages using Aegis of Assault find it helpful, and can still use the CON bonus for Defending. Gloryhunter: You gain a +1 racial bonus to all attacks made on surprise and the first round of combat. "all attacks" meaning what? Attack rolls? Damage rolls? If you are surprised, does it still count for your first turn? With Arcane you should have enough range, but lack of synergy with Martial classes for multi-attacking (esp. with Warlord) dampens its usefulness. Magic Born: When using arcana checks for arcane knowledge or detect magic rolls you may roll twice and take either result. Get better at what you're good at. Good stuff. (Does Arcane knowledge include monster knowledge?) Once again the power is worded sloppily. I'm assuming you meant something like this: Reckless: You can use reckless as an encounter power. Synergizes nicely with the Warlock's control-ish abilities, and the Wizard's. Could make a passable Orbizard (thunderwave + wall anyone?) May be a little too good, since Arcana-based classes (except swordmage) aren't supposed to be attacked anyway. A variant could make the power slide, maybe more squares, and grant CA to all enemies before next turn...or would that be too swingy? Overall, decent race, with a nice flavorful ability. I don't see anything too broken, though I question the usefulness of the +Athletics. |
| #6ff6shadowApr 13, 2009 11:07:51 | I question the Arcana rerolls. That seems a bit strong. Otherwise, the rest of the race seems okay. Gloryhunter should specify attack rolls, but seems interesting. Reckless power need some formatting, as noted above, but seems okay as is. |
| #7drackcoveApr 13, 2009 17:30:33 | Okay I fixed Gloryhunter a bit, rephrazed it as: "Gloryhunter: You gain a +1 racial bonus to attack rolls made on surprise rounds and on the first round of combat." As for the Athletics things...I suppose that a hold out from 3rd edition, lizardmen got +2 to blance, swim, and jump checks. Made sence to keep it for the erumail, though I am not sure what skill would be better to replace it now. Now 556shadow, Magicborn doesnt give the ability to detect magic as thats trained only use of arcana. This ability is actually suppost to simulate that erumail understand magic on such a personel level that they can smell, taste, and almost see the magic around. What ability do you think can better represent that if it is too powerful? |
