| #1odraudeJun 16, 2009 16:29:26 | I don't really see too many of these threads here. I wanted to make an expanded armory with new weapons and new weapon options (besides brutal, reach, etc.). Ideas and critiques always wanted |
| #2bone_nagaJun 16, 2009 20:51:44 | I like the ideas there. Some things to work out: Does the paired weapon property still function if you are using Twin Strike or similar powers? Also, paired weapons seem better than brutal weapons, so I would keep that in mind. Either stat them a little lower than comparable weapons to make up for it, or make them superior weapons. Battojutsu is a great idea and seems balanced. I would add that a battojutsu bonus can only be gained 1/encounter (to keep someone with quickdraw from sheathing their weapon just to keep redrawing it). I like the guisarme idea, but I think it should either function as an attack roll, or give the defender an opposed skill check (athletics or acrobatics) or make the DC 15 + 1/2 the level of the target. Otherwise it becomes way too easy (even if it is a very situational bonus). |
| #3odraudeJun 16, 2009 22:22:15 | I like the ideas there. Some things to work out: It would function the same way. As for balance, the weapons wont be very strong (I plan on at most maybe a d8 but most will be 1d6s) and you only roll once and probably take the better score. So lets say you have the tonfas (lets say 1d6 each) and want to attack. If they have one in each hand, then you roll one attack roll. Then you roll both weapons' damage (2 d6s) and pick one. That is your damage plus whatever modifiers. Battojutsu is a great idea and seems balanced. I would add that a battojutsu bonus can only be gained 1/encounter (to keep someone with quickdraw from sheathing their weapon just to keep redrawing it). Good idea I didnt think of that. Not sure if I want to make it once per encounter, since it would be the most limited weapon property. However, I think I might add that sheathing your weapon is still a minor action, even with quick draw. Good call on that. I like the guisarme idea, but I think it should either function as an attack roll, or give the defender an opposed skill check (athletics or acrobatics) or make the DC 15 + 1/2 the level of the target. Otherwise it becomes way too easy (even if it is a very situational bonus). Good point. 15 + 1/2 level of target sounds reasonable. |
| #4odraudeJun 16, 2009 22:27:38 | Added the changes and made battojutsu a bit more restrictive for the Quick Draw people |
| #5pluisjenJun 17, 2009 4:18:06 | I really like Battōjutsu, specially in combination with a Ranger using hit-and-run... draw, slash, shift out of reach, sheath. It's not exactly overpowering, but it's a very cool fluff. And I do think that paired weapons should only work if you use both of them on a single attack roll, so not on Twin Strike and the like; even if mostly because it'd make no sense. If you add that; it probably won't even hurt to give them high damage dice; after all you are sacrificing your shield hand for a weapon you can't attack with; you could've used it for a two-handed blade as well. Brutal is good because it gives higher damage without sacrificing your other hand; so I think that'd even out the paired weapons nicely. One thing though; what if the paired weapons aren't equal? For instance one is a +1 and the other is a +2? Would that matter for the dice roll? Or is that just abstracted out and you pick which weapon scored the hit? That's probably be for the easier. |
| #6evilkobraJun 17, 2009 4:28:13 | I'm AFB so correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Quick Draw only affected the drawing of a sword (or other item), not the sheathing? If so, the 'minor action' caveat would be superfluous. As for the guisarme, aren't you forgetting Strength vs Fortitude? You can obviously add any modifiers that you wish, but in general that should be the standard way of dealing with these effects. |

It's not exactly overpowering, but it's a very cool fluff. Thanks. So far that is my favorite one. And I do think that paired weapons should only work if you use both of them on a single attack roll, so not on Twin Strike and the like; even if mostly because it'd make no sense. Good point. Remember, with Paired weapons, it is one attack roll, but two damage rolls and you pick either damage. I'll make it only for single attacks. One thing though; what if the paired weapons aren't equal? For instance one is a +1 and the other is a +2? Would that matter for the dice roll? Or is that just abstracted out and you pick which weapon scored the hit? That's probably be for the easier. If you have a Tonfa +1 to hit and a Tonfa +2 to hit, then when you make your one attack roll, you would use the higher one (in this case, the +2) I'm AFB so correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Quick Draw only affected the drawing of a sword (or other item), not the sheathing? If so, the 'minor action' caveat would be superfluous. That is true, however, its to stop some people from thinking that if they can draw a sword as a free action, then they can sheath it as a free action as well. Hopefully to prevent any munchkiny things. As for the guisarme, aren't you forgetting Strength vs Fortitude? You can obviously add any modifiers that you wish, but in general that should be the standard way of dealing with these effects. I thought about that, but at least for me, it fell like you were actually trying to pull the guy off, not attack him off. I think the Athletics check against DC 15 + 1/2 level fits better. |
| #8bone_nagaJun 17, 2009 15:56:08 | Even with sheathing being a minor action, I would still limit battojutsu to 1/encounter. Reason being that otherwise with Quickdraw, you draw the weapon as a free action, strike, sheath as a minor, and next turn start again, getting the +1 attack bonus round after round. Yes 1/encounter is the most limited weapon property, but it's a free attack bonus, and it keeps to the flavor of it, rather than having someone resheathe it every couple seconds and draw it again. |

True but that would provoke an attack of opportunity if you sheath in front of someone. If they move into soneone's square, then draw and attack, they cannot move out and sheath safely because it will provoke. |
| #10odraudeJun 20, 2009 13:58:03 | I added a massive list of the added weapons and descriptions, including their weapon properties. |
| #11odraudeJun 22, 2009 2:21:52 | A bump. Working on stats as we speak |
| #12QubeJun 22, 2009 6:33:42 | Battōjutsu: Battōjutsu is the art of drawing a weapon and making multiple attacks with it I do not see how this is a weapon quality, and not a feat? Since the katana and wakasashi are 2 Uchigatana*, I think "Uchigatana" would be a better name for the weapon qualitiy *wikipedia: (uchigatana ) "the custom of wearing a pair of long and short uchigatana together, the daisho (literally “big-little”), became the dominant sign of the Samurai class." and (daisho) "The daishō is composed of the katana and the wakizashi " In addition, as a standard action, the user can roll an Athletics check, with an added bonus equal to the weapon proficiency, to dismount a rider. This will leave the rider prone on a failed save. DC 15 + 1/2 level of the target. ...no. just no. don't start using skill checks as offensive action, especially with fixed DCs. this were a couple of the problems of 3.5: overlapping multiple mechanisms. if you want to trip, I'dd use rules simelar to bull rush: a attack vs a defense. Chakram: The chakram is a circular blade that does decent melee damage why? Katana: (Battōjutsu, Versitile) as kendoka, it always pains me to see 'versitile' with the katana. fighting with a katana in one hand, seriously decreases its efficiency (the only reason a katana, and not a wakasashi, is used in two weapon fighting, is the additional distance, which is very neccecairy in real life) Ninjatō: Ninjatō are short swords that excel in quick attacks from the sheath, dealing damage based on speed. A ninjatō user may add their Dexterity modifier instead of their Strength modifier to damage rolls. A rogue proficient with the ninjatō can treat it as a dagger for the purpose of the Rogue Weapon Talent class feature. (Battōjutsu, Off hand) I would limited the use of dex instead of strength for basic attacks only*. also I'dd add the versitile ability. *: same comment for nunchaku's Uchigatana: The uchigatana is a large two handed curved blade that can deal a large blow against someone, especially when first drawn. During the turn that an uchigatana is drawn, its can score crit hit on a 19 and 20. (Battōjutsu) as I said before, its strange to have a katana and a Uchigatana in the same list (as a katana is a uchigatana). Also I wouldn't higher crit range to weapons ... Wakizanshi: Usually accompanied by the katana, the wakizanshi is a dagger-like blade, great for quick draw attacks as well as defense against attacks.(Battōjutsu, Defensive, Off hand) a Wakizashi (I have no idea what that n is doing there), is just a slightly curved shortsword. I see no reason why it would have the defensive quality if the shortsword doesn't have it ... |
| #13magus_stragusJun 22, 2009 9:13:52 | I agree with being against the katana being versatile. Yes, it is possible to use it one-handed, but it's not optimal. I also agree with the wakizashi. It is a fluffed shortsword. It shouldn't be any different at all. Also, a ninjato is a larger and different in shape than a dagger. In fact, it is as large as a shortsword, and the shape of the blade is like a somewhat-straight katana blade. Why should it be treated as a dagger, then? It doesn't provide with the mobility of the hand a dagger does, nor it has any dagger-like functions. |

(I mean, what kind of idiot uses unique weapon? "search is belongings ... hey look, this guy is carring a ninjato! obviously you found it somewhere, right?" ). I think ninjato is basically a sword used by a ninja ... but indeed, in common fantasy, ninjato's are straight swords, slightly shorter then a katana (somewhat of a basterd shortsword ...) Persnally; I would simply make it a light blade ... |
| #15odraudeJun 22, 2009 12:17:24 | I do not see how this is a weapon quality, and not a feat? I understand that Battojutsu it not a weapon quality in real life, but an actual training method. However, I feel it is the best way to describe the property without calling it something like "Quick Draw". I guess if I can think of a better name I will change it. As for the uchigatana, from what I understood from reading some books I got from the library, it was a larger predecessor of the katana that came after the tachi. ...no. just no. I guess an attack against Fort would be much simpler. why? I had found two images of chakrams (had to filter through the Xena ones) and saw two types: ones with handles in the middle for melee and throwing, and ones without. I decided to go with the ones with the handle. as kendoka, it always pains me to see 'versitile' with the katana. fighting with a katana in one hand, seriously decreases its efficiency (the only reason a katana, and not a wakasashi, is used in two weapon fighting, is the additional distance, which is very neccecairy in real life) I think versatile shows the better efficiency with two hands for the extra damage, though I can imagine the difference between one hand and two being much more dramatic in real life. This was also combined with what I read about Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū, fighting with a katana and a wakizashi. I don't really know how effective it is, but the option is there. I would limited the use of dex instead of strength for basic attacks only*. also I'dd add the versitile ability. Agreed except for the versatile part. as I said before, its strange to have a katana and a Uchigatana in the same list (as a katana is a uchigatana). The higher crit was only for if you drew the weapon that turn. a Wakizashi (I have no idea what that n is doing there), is just a slightly curved shortsword. Yes, it is possible to use it one-handed, but it's not optimal. last time I checked (being wikipedia - a few hours ago), ninjato's don't really exist. typo for the n. Descriptions for both swords was done around 4am, so calling them dagger like was a mistake on my part. On the pdf I am working on, they both have a d6 as damage and are light blades. I can understand the Wakizashi not having the rouge talent so I'll remove that. As for the disputed nature of the Ninjato, i've read two schools of thought. First one was that it was just a wakizanshi. Second one was that it was indeed a shorter sword around 35cm-40cm. Since the kukri in Adventurer's Vault is 30cm-38cm in real life and still can be a dagger for the purpose of the talent, I gave the ninjato the same ability mostly out of size. Whether it existed or not doesn't matter for the basic stats for it. |
| #16odraudeJun 22, 2009 12:49:10 | In retrospect, ōdachi would probably be a better weapon to use than the uchigatana |
| #17odraudeJun 29, 2009 12:23:48 | After some thought, research, and mapping of actual stats, I agree with Qube and have changed the weapon to the odachi and the weapon property to uchigatana. Stats coming soon for the weapons. |
