I've been trying to put together a system for my new 4.0 game. I want the players to earn points based on their actions (fame for good/heroic things and infamy for bad/non-heroic)

I want these points to give bonus and penalties to the party depending on how the people view them, and also to gauge if they are well known though the lands.

I was thinking maybe a plus to Diplomacy (fame) or Intimidate (infamy) or maybe the starting attitude be higher or lower based on it?

Can anyone help me flesh out this system please?

I've always assumed that a character's reputation grows as his level does. His career of heroic deeds growing his legend. My system was just a matter of tiered DCs for the knowledge check of NPCs.

1) The DC was dependent upon how frequently the character travelled/adventured in the region.

2) The NPCs check was assigned a bonus equal to the character's level.

3) A successful check would grant either a +/- 2 modifier to the character's social attribute checks depending upon whether people had a favorable or disfavorable view of the character's deed.

4) I would frequently make the check for a whole settlement instead of individual NPCs (for the purpose of saving time).
* A successful check indicates that the character's name and reputation are known. That there is general good/ill will toward the character, and that local children will either play at being/defeating the character (who is seen as a hero/villain respectively).
* If the check succeeds by 5 or more, the people have a good idea of what the character is supposed to look like. This makes impersonating the character more difficult.
* If the check is successful by 10 or more, the Character's face is known to the people. Would-be imposters must use great care to disguise themselves.

5) NPCs like children and young adults, who are prone to hero worship, may follow a heroic character about and pester them with questions and adoration.

This formed the framework for how famous PC heroes and villains where known in my v3.5 campaigns.

Check out the Wheel of Time game for the 3.5 system. I don't remember all the specifics, but it had rules for fame, infamy, feats, etc.

Also check out a free pdf (I think its on RPGNow) called Combat Advantage. One of them deals with reputation feats. I don't think its exactly what you had in mind, but they are very flavorful feats and mechanically balanced.

YEah, The WotRPG had a really nice fame system. i dont remember all the specifics, but it was something like:
- You gain fame points for doing actions/going up lvls/etc.
- AN pc/nps would roll a d20 and get a bonus to the roll = to the number
of fame points aquired by the person your trying to identify.
- the dc would determine the info gain. So dc 25 might be heard of person
but can't place. Dc 30 known where the person is from. Etc.
