I have introduced the use of Fate points into my 4ed game.I really like the effect. If you don't know already,it's a carry over from WHFRPG.Each player starts with one,the purpose of them is to represent the notion that the character has a destiny and is unlikely to be quickly done in by random happenstance.Mechanically, one may be permenently expended to escape CERTAIN DEATH.The DM must determine some reason the PC survives with life and limb intact.THAT IS ALL,he may be captured by the enemy, fall off a mountain and land in a Roc's nest,or even wake up butt-naked in a mudpuddle-as long as he survives.Fate points may also be awarded for major heroic accomplishments,or actions that will affect a characters entire destiny(pivotal decisions-DM's discretion) They can never be bought with anything EVER.I Like them b/c it encourages players to be more daring,And I can make some situations exceedingly challenging or dangerous and test the PC's limits w/o arbitrarily whacking one or more of them. Also, bad luck can sometimes kill a PC at a moment that is quite inconvenient to the plot, this provides a buffer. Thanks for taking the time,I look forward to your potentially argumentative critique :D

I was wondering where these came from. I encountered them in a 2nd/3rd ed hybrid thing my friend's brother runs, except they granted you a re-roll, and you earned them the same way you mentioned.

What i did for 4th was cap them at 3 and let them be used only once an encounter, offering a reroll, and being earned just as you described. This way it doesnt overshadow race/class powers which give you a reroll.

I brought it over because the warlord and warlock were both notorius for rolling low (and i mean 1-5 low), and i was getting tired of giving them "pitty re-rolls" cause it was sad watching them miss with every encounter power while the Paladin and Ranger mopped the floor with everything.

Actually in WHFRPG they have a counter-part,fortune points, the pc's start with the same amount of those and can use them for rerolls.I decided not to include them b/c since they have what, in video game terms, amounts to an "extra man".I figure they can afford to do some missing.Gotta get new dice or change dieties or something LOL

I started using them b/c I tend to run a particularly brutal game.I didn't want to change my style....nor did I want to be referred to as a "Killer DM"
