| #1raptor112Dec 15, 2010 9:09:26 | Ok, here is my problem, and its role playing problem rather then a rules one. In the new game I'm slowly working on the gods are going to die early on in the game, either the 1st or 2nd game most likely. The PC's are going to be based out of a major city and I need to figure out how long I before I can realistically get the City under control (ie, stop panic, and mayhem in the streets). I need to figure this out because there is a coranation that is supose to happen and it needs to happen after the gods die. Now no divine character loose there powers, and I figure the head of the church in the city can come out and say "hey the gods are still with us, I can still work miricales" But I need a reasonable amout of time to have the city mostly calm down. How long do I need? |

If, for example, the sky darkens, it starts raining ash, plants begin to die when they all die, then there would be a lot of (reasonable) panic. If it seems like the world is coming to an end, people would be freaking out, and they probably would be for quite a while. If, on the other hand, nothing visible happens, then they probably wouldn't panic outwardly at all. If nothing outwardly changes, most people won't notice, and anyone who does would probably suffer in silence. If you want some panic, then find a middle ground; there should be a sign, something to mark the death of the pantheon, but something that the people would eventually calm down about, such as a torrential rain that lasts for days. It really all depends on what feeling you're trying to create. Hope this helps! ![]() |
| #3jetshieldDec 15, 2010 10:26:32 | How are the common folk going to know the gods are dead if the clergyfolk still have their powers? What event or events are going to happen that leads to panic? If the gods just vanish one day without a ripple, who's going to notice? EDIT: heh beat me to it. slow typer 4tl |
| #4raptor112Dec 15, 2010 10:35:39 | Well, when it happens there is going to be an unearthly scream of pain that is heard around the world, and then a painful silence for over 5 minutes, as well as everyone with divine powers will feel the death of the gods. Also and this won't really affect the anyone in the city they are in, but all around the world the handful of low level epic divine characters die instantly...but they won't find that out till later...at least in theory |
| #5raptor112Dec 15, 2010 10:39:47 | I want there to be some panic, as a means of the PC's geting in good with the Regeant and future king. But I don't want it to be too long. Like no longer then a month tops, and I really only want the coranation to take place no longer then a month after the death of the gods |

If you ask me, it seems rather sudden; people would freak out and be upset, but only for a short time, even as little as a few minutes. They would be afraid, but this would most likely be because of confusion. The majority probably wouldn't even understand what had happened. |

Yeah that is what I was going with, maybe a day or two of panic...but alot of my players are sticklers for this kind of thing. More then once I did something I thought was interesting and cool, only to have them stare at me like I have three heads and say if I do X then Y and Z crumble and I start world war 3...even though I really just wanted to do X and had no plans for Y or Z to be affected. I just want to be able to head off arguements (that will be mostly out of game) before they start |

Well if that's the case, you need to plan accordingly. If you want the common rabble to only freak out for a day or two, then whatever happens should last for at least a day, and should be appropriate for the level of panic seen. You need to consider reasonable cause and effect. That said, you're the DM, and if your players have a problem, you're calling the shots. |

The way I see this: Unearthly scream of panic happens. Some people panic while it's happening. Silence. Most people wait to see what happens next or mill around in confusion. Priests feel the death of the gods. Priests panic. The world goes on as usual as far as the people can tell. People return to their daily tasks. Rumors of what it might have been race around the city. Priests realise their powers are unaffected. Priests assume the feeling was something else, perhaps a warning of trouble to come or a warning that the people need to be more obedient to the will of the gods. For the most part, people ignore or dismiss things that don't seem to affect them personally. If you want to cause a general panic, you need something more visible to the populace. Perhaps a meeting of high ranking devine NPCs is in town, and they all keel over dead at the same time. Perhaps the temples immediately begin to crack and decay. Maybe every holy symbol in the world shatters as the scream ends. Or you could wait until a particularly nasty rumor surfaces in a few days that pushes the fear level up until panic sets in. |

What if only an handfull (the bigger mages, the heads of the churches) know? If its only the scream and silence, i could see the city calming down in a week, with big church services to help that; the higher mages would want to investigate the causes and the heads of the church wouldnt CERTAINLY want to spread the word that their patron god died. You could add some lower level sensitives that may spread some chaos, but most wouldnt be taken serious and some could even be persecuted. IF you insist on the premise that everyone knows, you would get riots for months, IMHO; normal churches would crumble (due to lost of faith in their higher being) and several mages (and heads of the church) would proclame themselves living gods, having been given the rest of the spark of godhood (not really), and from there religious wars could result. |

However, it would be a great place for demogoges to get started, it most of the fear is coming from mortal sorces then the fear lasts as long as you need it to or until the players do something about it. The players could come out with a real good in with the new king if they stop the panic in his name by taking down some of the fearmongers in his name. The would not even need to deal the killing blow, just give the king the excuse he needs to move against them. They could also remove a fearmonger by helping the demogog get over his own fear. They could expose them in public as fraud. All good adventure possibiites. Mathius |
