My adventure is as follows. Some bandits raid a small village and the PC's are off to go and get back a stolen scrying stone. The idea behind the first part of the adventure is the hunt for the bandits lair. How do I go about having the PC's search for them without just telling them where it is?

4e: Skill challange, or evenjust a skill check. Actually you could have them go through several encounters a mix of combat and skill checks to discover the information.

As in leave some breadcrumbs and hope they follow.

Here's a way to handle it. Give the party a skill challenge to find the bandit lair. You can make it difficult enough that they have a pretty decent chance of failing.

If they fail the challenge, they run into some other encounter. That could be something like they find a spot that would make a pretty decent lair, only it doesn't happen to be the bandit lair, but someone else DOES live there...

Once they defeat the encounter, they go back to square one and start searching again. Eventually they'll pass the skill challenge and find what they're looking for.

In the mean time the bandits may also be out doing nasty things and maybe even leaving the area if they weren't planning on staying around permanently. So perhaps the first time the PCs miss the challenge the bandits raid some farm or small village, etc. The second time maybe they do something even MORE sinister, and if the PCs can't find them after 3 tries, then maybe something else happens, like the bandits move on or if the PCs were hired to deal with them they gain the displeasure of their boss.

Bandits and slavers are more likely to have a temporary camp - not a fortified position with one way in or out.

May be using "bandit" as a generic descriptor.

Obviously the OP is meaning them to be a structured group with an HQ.

I still say Skill Challenge. If it's a fortified position make a skill challenge to storm it too... Or to just get in.

I rather like combining Skill Challenges with combat... But that's me.
