We're playing 4e in the WARHAMMER FANTASY world and there are a fair number of guns out there..btw, here are the house rules we've been playing with since 4e started: Firearms Cost 40 gp. Powder and shot are 1 gp for 5 shots. Firearms have a superior bonus (+4) and damage is roll twice and choose the better damage (except on criticals), but are noisy. Rifle or pistol feat proficiency required. Rogue or ranger can make partial concealment burst 0 for 1 round. Roll natural “1” disables the weapon until next extended rest. Rifles are two-handed. Pistol is two-handed for Halfling. Blunderbuss Rifle: 1d12. Reload 2 standard actions. Range: 5/7. May be loaded with glass, nails, rocks, etc. Firearm/arquebus Rifle: 1d12. Reload 2 standard actions. Range: 8/15 Hochland Long Rifle: 1d12. Reload 2 standard actions. Range: 15/30 Pistol 1d10. Reload 2 standard actions. Range: 5/9. Carry a maximum of two of these. Bomb (OWA p45) 2d10 dmg. Cost 10. On a fumble, explodes on thrower. On a “2” it's a dud and worthless. Can be set to burn for 0-3 rounds. Incendiary (OWAp45) 1d10 + 4 ongoing fire. Cost 10. On fumble, explodes on thrower. On a “2” it's a dud and worthless. Explodes on impact. There are other firearms and stuff from the WFRP books, however I've found these to be more than adequate for our needs..as only one player actually uses them anyways. Any thoughts on relevant powers, skills or feats? |
| #2lady_ishtarFeb 22, 2009 12:43:28 | here are some firearms im using in my game My firearms few problems with yours: long reload times=worthless weapons. the time it takes me to reload a gun i can fire a crossbow twice. if i miss thats like half the fight that im doing nothing. not fun. carry only 2 pistols? doesnt make sense. like none at all. its like saying i can only carry 1 sword. the whole "nat 1" penalty, another reason not to use them. i roll a nat 1, im worthless until we take extended rest. at most i would make it a standard action to fix your gun. seems like you are trying to make your firearms realistic, but that will only make them either overpowered or worthless. |

Actually, that was kind of the point in our game. I didn't want them firing more than once per combat. BLAM! and enter combat a different way. This line of thinking is directly based on something that drives me nutzo about the Ranger...shoot..shoot...shoot..shoot...shoot...shoot...shooot..shoot... ..and they called prior D&D editions redundant ;) We're taking a look at the reload time for higher level feats and whatnot, but I"m interested to see how your stuff works out too. carry only 2 pistols? doesnt make sense. like none at all. its like saying i can only carry 1 sword. No, it really doesn't. I'll probably pull that one ;) the whole "nat 1" penalty, another reason not to use them. i roll a nat 1, im worthless until we take extended rest. at most i would make it a standard action to fix your gun. Actually it's one of those "crap your pants" moments and gives players a chance to say explitives Nobody bothers to fix their gun in combat. You draw it and pull a sword. It's been so much fun having that random aspect that I might just add it for bows and xbows. Probably give PC's an action point for their inconvenience though..kind of like what we do with chaos-rolls for spellcasters (see seperate notes on that elsewhere)seems like you are trying to make your firearms realistic, but that will only make them either overpowered or worthless. I'm aiming for both We're actually playing in the Warhammer world, so PC's aren't necessarily perfect or 'epic' at first level. Firearms are typically there to either "wound the BBEG" or take out a minion. Currently, our Witch-Hunter and Halfling Rogue-Engineer carry them. The rogue uses it as a first shot..and the witch hunter uses it as a last shot..the same goes for bombs ;) It's been 'loads' of fun. I'm not sure how gunz work in the Warhammer MMO, but we may try to emulate some of that too. Thanks for the tips. I'll take a look at the reload times ![]() Jay ... |
| #4SgtFreakshowFeb 22, 2009 15:59:14 | As it's warhammer firearms you can easily fix the loading issues on higher levels by granting access to automatic firearms. Repeater pistols and handguns are used by imperial engineers and with the existence of Organ Guns, Helblaster Volley Guns you can easily incorporate several automatic rifles that would only need reloading after you've emptied every barrel/the magazine of the gun. With the existence of this kind of gun: ![]() There's very few limits... |
| #5lady_ishtarFeb 22, 2009 17:16:23 | well, if you are going for a one shot all-or-nothing guns i would make them even more powerful. basically make them into an encounter power in form of an item, maybe gibe them brutal property. |
| #6Cyber-DaveFeb 22, 2009 18:16:53 | Eh... not the way I would make guns work. You can see what I did with firearms in my signature. I wrote a set of Renaissance Fantasy rules, complete with guns. That being said, each their own. Whatever floats your boat. |
| #7EmirikolFeb 23, 2009 11:16:16 | Dave, that's good stuff ![]() I'm not trying to increase the power of firearms or escalate character power creep (like happened so much in 3E stuff). I like the firearms just for the theme. LIsh mentions increasing the initial damage if it's going to be pretty much one-shot..and I may consider that. If I do a repeater, I'm definately going to just make it like a bow and arrow. No point in turning this into Warhammer 40k afterall ![]() ..but that pix sarge shows is pretty cool. Jay H |
| #8Cyber-DaveFeb 23, 2009 15:36:41 | Yea. I wanted to capture them just for the theme too. That's why I pretty much just made my firearms crossbows, but with slightly slower reload speed, and one die size higher damage. Then I based my repeating firearms off the repeating crossbow in turn, but even less powerful (as they only have four barrels). Of course, the trade off is that my repeating firearms can be fired after only one barrel is loaded at regular firearm speed... but they also do damage at a one die size smaller damage die, so... But really, its just personal preference. I wanted characters be able to build characters totally based around firing a gun if they wanted to. If you want guns to be used only for a single shot and then drop method, then my method is not the best way to go. |
