I personally think, that the errata'd Endurance checks for Starvation, Suffocation and Dehydration aren't as good as the original rules from PHB, I liked those better and they gave me some realism in the game. Has anybody thought about why they changed the characters into beings which do not need to eat for about six weeks? I mean come on usually food shouldn't be a concern in the heroic environment but because of that it is very unlikely that a character will be without food for more than 3 Weeks! So I want to give you my thoughts on how I would deal with those things in a way, that it will actually matter to the players and not only to the characters, because let's be honest, only a few players care about the growling stomach or dry mouth of their character, when they have chips and cola ;). Starvation I'll have it mostly as original. Every day the character doesn't eat anything she or he makes an Endurance check against 10 + the number of days already starving. If the character fails that check, he or she loses a healing surge which cannot be regained until the character is successfully sated and takes an extended rest. Dehydration It is the same as with starving, but the Endurance check has the DC 15 + 4 times the number of days the character is already dehydrating. Suffocation After 5 rounds of not breathing the character makes an Endurance check 10 + 1 for each additional round the character already hasn't breathed and if the character fails that check he takes his level damage. Also, if the character takes damage, while holding his breath he has to make an Endurance check against the damage taken or immediately start drowning and taking suffocation damage. That was my revision. It has a lot of the original rules in it, I know, but I would want to know, if you think if I use exactly THIS model, it is good? I am asking because the characters are about to enter an underwater temple which is needed to escape from the place they are trapped in, and as you can see all three things might get very rare in that area. |

Just remember to balance the game and availability of food/water that it's still a playable part of the game. Actually counting PC rations and being desperate for food or water is a challenge only worth setting now and then. Well, unless your players are into it, in which case they'll probably find a way to stock up enough that it stops being difficult anyway. |

I also do this to put a kind of time-limit in that adventure, because that temple has no logical storytelling reason, why they wouldn't take extended rests after every fight ;] |
