| #1ParaxisDec 12, 2011 7:46:24 | I was reading another thread and it seems a few people have issues with say a tiny pixie fighter using a martial power on a huge dragon and causing it to be pushed or slid. For the record I don't I think things work fine now and it is all a part of heroic crazy cool fun and storytelling. But for you people that want a simple solution that adds a little bit more real world feel to size and forced movement how about for every size different the target is bigger than the acting character/creature they reduce the distance by 1. So a medium human hits a large ogre with a power that pushes 2 he is instead only pushed 1. Now in reverse when a larger person uses forced movement on a smaller creature a large ogre hits and pushes 1 on a tiny pixie that pixie gets pushed 4. Just so martial doesn't get treated different just have magic effects work the same, think of how tiny a magic bolt coming off of a halflings hand looks compared to dragons breath for example. Now this system penalizes smaller races and gives to the bigger ones so to compensate have a bonus to hit larger creatures on attacks of opportunity only and a penalty to hit smaller targets on attacks of opportunity, only attacks that target AC or Ref though. These changes seem balanced and make size matter in somewhat realistic ways. |

| #3alitainDec 12, 2011 11:23:05 | Actually what you got OP ISN'T balanced. What you got is a system that gives all the benefit to creatures of Med or larger size and all the drawbacks to Small or smaller creatures as Neutronium_Dragon mentioned. I honestly do not get why people are making such a big deal about Pixie's being able to do anything anyone else can in terms of forced movement, damage, etc. This is a fantasy game believe is basically required to be suspended. But again, this isn't balanced at all. What it does is make it so a Small or smaller creature would have no reason to use any abilities that evoked force movement on an enemy. Well maybe Small creatures, but even then. If say a Small character is facing a dwarf then any ability that does force movement would be useless unless the movement was 3 or more squares. And on top of that not only do you penalize them for no reason, you continue to penalize them by allowing the forced movement against them to increase. You really don't take into account that as the example, a Pixie can fly. Someone that maybe swats the pixie as an example of forced movement of say 1 sq which is 5ft isn't suddenly going to be able to swat the pixie 25ft with the same blow. The Pixie can right themselves in the air with their wings, or twist aside so it's only a glancing blow, however you want to describe it. And of course that isn't even getting into magical forced movement. If you're so hung up on how a Pixie could make a larger creature move from a martial angle it's basically the same logic that's used when people have issue with them doing the same damage as Small races. You can just think of the pixie fighter jabbing at the huge dragon at vulnerable areas which causes the dragon to shift and move around in the direct the pixie's power pushes/slides/etcs them. Or in a more comical fashion, the pixie could jab his/her sword into the foot of the monster causing it pain and it hops around like cartoons. Look, I'm being negative and this is the homebrew forum I know. But the reason is these rules make no sense and seem to me to be a way to punish anyone who isn't playing a regular, standard, everyday medium character. You "balance" by giving smaller races a bonus to OA attacks is pointless and in no way balances this out at ALL. Sorry, but them the facts. Also, pretty much 99% of OA are against AC being basic attacks. So it's not like saying the bonus/penalty is for atks against AC/Ref only means anything. In the end really it is still one sided. I mean this is your group and all, so the best thing to do is present these rules to your group and see if they agree with them or not. But I would bet either the group wont want to play with these rules because they are unbalanced, or else if the majority want them then you probably will see a decrease or plan wipe out of Small/Pixie characters. Or at the very least they wont take powers or rolls that use forced movement because why bother? |
