I am a new DM attempting to create an overarching campaign concept to pursue i the Forgotten Relams Campaign I will be running.
The idea is as follows:
Bane VS. Shar
The Church of Bane, sensing shar's hold on toril tightening has redoubled its efforts to not only weaken shar but fulfill Bane's desire to kill or enslave share the slayer of Mystra.

1.  I would like there two be increasing  political conflict between followers of the two gods.  I understand that Netheril is Firmly Shar but what about Bane.  All I saw was the church of bane and a mention of their influence in Moonsea.

2. The players are not evil, instead they will be manipulated by bane into committing acts they deem as good, attacks on followers of shar.  In a way the acts are against evil forces, but in the end the PCs are pawns of Bane and they dont know it.  Throughout the course of the adventure Ill give the PCs reasons to hate Bane and in the end when they discover the truth, they have been doing the work of a despised enemy, I hope it will lead to a cool and fulfilling way to end a plot.  Whether or not this is after they bring down the netheril empire/shar church idk, i guess its up to where the campaign leads organically.

The adventure is based around a character concept for a paladin.  This paladin lost his powers 10 or so years ago when his god was thought to be slain.  Turns out she was captured by Shar, or so he thinks.  The god comes to him in a dream and tells him that he must champion her by question against shar.  Turns out in the end that it bane posing as the god, manipulating the pc.  Bane actually killed the god.

What do you guys think.  Is this pitfall ridden and should I just stay away.

Sounds very good to me! You could even have them attack innocents, where the paladin's "god" gives them guidance in his dreams.

Sounds really good to me.  Although I would remind you that there are other forces at work in Toril, so there could/should be other forces reacting to this war that is erupting between Bane and Shar.

Wise words. Heed them!

Also if you started the campaign in Loudwater and Lady of Shadows is s till alive, she could easly become a recurring villain perhaps working on Shar's side. I am sure also that Cyric will most likely try to take part in this (or his followers since he is entrapped).

I think the Bane vs Shar idea is an excellent theme for a campaign.

I would actually have a civil war within the Netherese Empire at its core. The goal of Shar, and thus of Sharrans, is ultimately about the end of everything. You can't build an empire on a religion of nihilism, but a religion of tyranny is exactly what an empire requires.

The new Banite faction amongst the Netherese princes seeks an alliance with the Banites of Mulmaster. The Sharran faction might ally with the Cyricist Zhentarim to oppose the Mulmaster Banites. This could then generate various heroic tier adventures involving clashes between the Cyricist Zhents and the Mulmaster Banites ostensibly over control of the Zhentarim (which used to be Banite in nature) but with the clash between the two factions of the Netherese princes at its core.

For the paragon tier, why not go back to 1E and D3 Vault of the Drow and have a drow city engaged in a three way civil war among three factions: the followers of Lolth, the Sharrans with their Netherese allies and the Banites (allied with a fomorian king [made sane with a Banite artefact] and his cyclops legions) whose dogma of organisation and conquest might be appealing to some of the more farsighted drow. The PCs come into this three-way battle and effectively decide which faction is victorious.

The epic tier would need to be shaped by previous events but I could imagine the party seeking out Jergal for his aid in slaying Bane or even Shar. Before that happens the party must take the fight to the city of Shade. A party is no match for a flying city so they party must discover how to return the lost Selunite flying city of Selunarra to the Realms (check out the Forgotten Realms wiki for details of this city). While the armies of the two flying cities clash, the party can take on the princes of Shade. After that, it's just a small matter of finding Jergal and delivering the beatdown to one or both deities.

OK, that's pretty rough and very sparse but I hope there are a few ideas there you can use.
