I've often felt that rituals are underutilized in the games I've run; the cost and time required to use them turns my player's off from these potentially colorful and interesting ways to solve problems or add character flavor.

Would making specific low level rituals free and quick to use unbalance the game terribly?

I'm not talking about anything like Enchant Magic Item, of course, but I'd like to let the wizard pull curtains out of mid air or the cleric purify a bottle of water without them worrying about their coin purse or the clock (out of combat of course). Note: they would still have to pay the full cost to buy the ritual book, uses would be free.

i was going to comment that this thread would have been better off in the Dm or General sections. until it clicked that your looking for something like house rule type advice, let me see what i can say...

hm, i havent played my ritual able druid yet, and were beginners so i have no experince on Rituals.

But i can see where your coming from, rituals could add RP flavour, or a different way to solve a problem.

How bout a house rule like so...

If a player casts a ritual that has a level equal to or lower than half the current level of the players' character, your character can use that ritual without expending it's components. Also, rituals with preparation time have this halved.

Hope this was what you were looking for

Since they are made for out-of-combat situations, go ahead and make them cheaper or free. Heck, learning them could be more automatic. The only wizard in my current group hasn't even used his rituals yet, I think mainly for lack of wanting to state he'll stop what he's doing and take the time to research one.

So, yeah, just let'em have it else they might not use'em.

There are definitely some of the rituals that would be good for having relatively no cost. Some really do need the cost since they can be powerful.

My thought would be to have them free to use but you could only do so many free use ones between extended rests. Ritual points if you would. I'd have to look through the rituals but I might do this for the rituals that would most likely not get much use because of the cost.

i noticed that to get rituals, the PCs would have to learn somehow. so i made sure to put two libraries into the town that they visited.

i made a short list of rituals within their level range for them to choose from. instead of the RAW eight hours to learn and master, i placed casting time x 4 as the learning period, but not more than eight hours.

that moved Pyrotechnics into a four minute learning period. some others were a mere 40 mintues of study while some were as much as 4 hours of study time.

that helped the PCs quite a bit. they could pick some rituals to learn, but certainly couldn't take the entire list of rituals. that induced some form of decision making.

but i do allow the ritual casters to teach each other. so they can double the number of rituals by sharing with each other.

i allow them to learn a ritual their level +3, but only perform a ritual their level +2. they can scribe any ritual to scroll of their level or lower. they will still have to use the components. i make sure to place components in treasure parcels by the handfuls.

i'd like them to feel more comfortable using rituals. i see them as a good roleplay addition because they are outside of combat events.
