Hi everyone!

(Und Leute, wenn Ihr das hier lest werde ich es wissen und Eure Charaktere erleiden ein gar schreckliches Schicksal, das mit gigantischen Plüschbären und vielen Ab-18 Szenen zu tun hat.)

Sorry for the german disclaimer, my players lurk around here as well :-)

I'm currently working on a couple of encounters to spice up the Mournland expedition my players (Lvl 10) are about to beginn.

If you don't know anything about the Eberron Mournland: It's pretty much a magical nuclear wasteland with all kinds of weird arcane threats.

Having seen the trailer of "Vanishing on 7th Street" I had a rather unusual idea for a combat encounter while the party rests for the (not) evening.
While they make camp, they can notice weird movements in the gloomy twilight around them, but can't find any traces of creatures in close proximity. Assuming they light a few torches or a camp fire, the light draws long shadows from the horses, their equipment, rocks and trees and, of course, the PCs as well. When they lay down to get some sleep, the shadows become alive and attack the guard first, attempting to weaken, stun, or otherwise incapacitate him/her.

I plan to have the light play a significant role in this encounter, acting as an additional weapon for the player. The shadows move, depending on the light source, along with the characters. Lighting additional torches or sunrods creates more light and helps to overcome the "insubstantial", "cover" and concealment of the enemies.

Still, while I guess that the basic idea is solid, I'm having trouble putting the encounter together as a whole. I have 5 characters (Ranger, Ardent, Fighter, Barbarian, Sorcerer), an equal amount of horses and about one or two rocks and other debris in the area to cast shadows and therefor create enemies.

Have you seen the movie and some suggestion as to how I could improve the encounter? Any suggestions on Monsters, maybe even traps?

Liked the movie, I saw it On Demand before it was in theaters...its pretty good. Look into Open Grave for some possible undead enemies, or anything tied to the Shadowfell.
