| #2pluisjenNov 06, 2010 11:08:52 | Whatever makes you happy but that's way too much information for a simple gem-cutting skill for me ![]() Can I ask.. what is the purpose of all of this? |
| #3wrecanNov 06, 2010 12:27:19 | This is free money for one PC on one Skill check. I am not a fan. it would be better if you turned it into a Skill Challenge in whic the entire party could participate, and then the increase in the value of the gemstones they find would be counted as a treasure parcel, and you can award them some XP for it as well. Some players don't seem to like the idea that D&D is designed for team play. Don't split the party, and that includes giving one PC extra cash for a basic skill check. |
| #4sallaNov 06, 2010 12:33:21 | That is waaaaaay too complicated for what it does. Giving free money for a simple skill check is not a good idea. |
| #5wrecanNov 06, 2010 19:56:05 | If you have a group like mine actually. Gold piece are almost in a commun bank for player. In that case, the whole exercise is a waste of time. Mechanics are for things that are actually meaningful. Having someone roll dice for something that is inconsequential makes no sense. Why not tell him that he can cut gems and he got a few extra gold for it, but nothing that makes a significant difference to the PCs' wealth. Why go to the bother of rolling dice for this? If you have a group than pc are capitalist and greedy, That maybe a problem. It has nothing to do with capitalism or greed. If you're going to be insulting to people who give you comments, don't ask for comments. |
| #6sallaNov 06, 2010 19:57:39 | Change lead into gold? :D why not. Game balance. |
| #7DunariaNov 06, 2010 20:01:06 | Errata : If you have a group than share wealth... If you have a group than everyone doesn't share wealth... I didn't means to insulting You Wrecan, Perhaps a lack In matter to explain myself is a error. well Take those 2 errata as the idea behind my brain and not a hurt to you. |

The ultimate point remains, you are giving your PCs gold for doing nothing. No risks involved, not even any energy expended. Something for nothing is not a good idea. |
| #9wrecanNov 06, 2010 20:57:51 | So you've invented an entirely new gambling game that you want to play in the middle of your D&D game so your players might get extra gold or lose gold (if they roll badly) that won't have a material effect on the game? I'm not sure how to comment on this. There doesn't seem to any criteria for determining whether the rules you devised fulfill any meaningful purpose. |
| #10wrecanNov 06, 2010 21:31:21 | Okay... then you've copied a gambling game that had wisely been discarded from D&D ten years ago, which you want to play in the middle of your D&D game so your players might get extra gold or lose gold (if they roll badly) that won't have a material effect on the game? I'm still not sure how to comment on this. There doesn't seem to any criteria for determining whether the rules you devised fulfill any meaningful purpose. I didn't understand the game design point of these gem cutting rules then and I still don't. |
