Lets start at the top, this is a D&D World, it's a 3 dimensional Xerox copy of Earth and the Solar System with a D&D twist. All of the standard rules and conventions of 4e D&D apply, it is just that in this case we are applying them to specific locales specifically the Earth or more precisely a magical version of that planet within a magical D&D Universe. It is the year 2008 A.D.

Applying the D&D mechanics of Spelljammer the D&D Universe consists of the Astral Sea within which there are a series of crystal spheres. One particular crystal sphere is where the star Helios is at its center, it is a carbon copy of our Sun, and like our Sun it is orbited by 8 planets depending on how you define the term.

The following is a chart of the Solar System objects:

Body ---- Type ---- Radius ---- Rotation Period -- Orbit Distance max/min miles
Helios --- Fire ----- 432,500 mi - 25d 9h 7m ------ 0 / 0
Hermes -- Earth --- 1,515 mi --- 58d 15h 36m ---- 43.4 million / 28.6 million
Aphrodite - Earth -- 3,760 mi --- 243d 0h 30m Retro - 67.7 million / 66.8 million
Gaea ----- Earth -- 3,959 mi --- 23h 56m 4.2s ---- 94.5 million / 91.4 million
Selene --- Earth --- 1,079 mi --- 27d 7h 43m 40s - 251,966 mi / 225,744 mi from Gaea
Ares ----- Earth --- 2,106 mi --- 24h 37m 22s ---- 154.9 million / 128.4 million
Asteroid Belt
Ceres ---- Earth --- 300 mi ----- 9.075 hours ----- 277 million / 237 million
Zeus ----- Air ----- 43,441 mi -- 9h 55m 30s ----- 507.4 million / 460.1 million
Kronos --- Air ----- 36,184 mi -- 10h 39m 20s ---- 941.1 million / 840.4 million
Uranos --- Water -- 15,759 mi -- 17h 14m 20s ---- 1.866 billion / 1.703 billion
Poseidon - Water -- 15,301 mi -- 16h 6m 40s ---- 2.824 billion / 2.762 billion
Pluton --- Ice ----- 742.5 mi --- 6d 9h 18m ----- 4.583 billion / 2.757 billion
Eris ----- Ice ----- 925 mi ----- ---------------- 6.766 billion
Crystal Sphere --------------------------------- 15 billion miles in radius

Timeline --- Event

I talked about the introduction of Moderns here. But for now, lets leave this out. I'd like to create a collaborative D&D World, so we'll start with the most broad assumptions about it and let people suggest ideas such that we can work from general to specific. I'd also like to make it a Spelljammer setting which is why I listed all the planets.

One thing to talk about is how do Spelljammers work in 4e? The magic system of D&D has been totally reworked in D&D 4e, so I guess we'll have to revise how spelljammer helms work as well.

One question that should be asked, do Helms still require spell users to propel wooden ships through space?

Should ships have the same hit points as characters or should they use scaled hit points to their size. One possibility is that the ships are propelled by Ether currents on sails that exist on both the material and border ethereal planes. I'll have to refer to the D&D 4e cosmology for this as I don't have the book in front of me right now.
