| #1ceroisSep 20, 2009 10:29:36 | So I am working on my 4e rebuild lovingingly dubed 4e MY WAY! and the latest thing I have been considering is getting rid of Superior Weapons. I have been considering doing the following; 1. Getting rid of Superior Weapons altogether 2. introducing weapon specialization feats which modify the effective properties of regular weapons. 3. Making groups of feats available in a similar fashion to those avialable for whips/garrotes...etc... 4. Grouping in exotic weapon feats with the common groupings. Now since I make 3 feats available on first level and a feat every level after that I plan on making power swap feats far more accessable. This would be my method for making martial characters more diverse. I have also dropped, weapon expertise, weapon focus, and focused expertise. Opinions? |

For the most part I have dropped racial weapon traits, I don't think they serve a purpose and they so often overlap with with weapon proficiencies they already have. I may at some point (if it seems appropriate) add free weapon specializations for specific iconic combinations but I doubt it. Those racial feats would of course be replaced during racial balancing-already underway.
I think that superior weapons are a needless complication (like superior armor). I am trying to simplify things and this seems to be a good area for it. Plus with a weapon specialization system I can take out the unbalanced double weapons and I can insert multiple styles for any particular weapon as exclusive weapon specializations with separate swap out powers lists attached.
Well similar to superior weapons really but with better balancing heh. A few examples though; Rapier +3, 1D8, Light Blade(original) +3, 1D6, Light Blade(New) Rapier specialization: Fencer +3, 1D8, Light Blade, Defensive or Rapier specialization: Epee +3. 1D6, Light Blade, Reach From there I could create abilities off of each specialization that allow characters to specialize in each form.
Chains, whips, Garrotes, Blowguns, Bola, Shuriken, Talenta Boomarang etc.. all of the weapons which currently are listed as superior weapons but probably really shouldn't be.
Na, its semi unrelated, those feats are being dropped because they are pointless. Any feet that simply isn't a choice is being a dropped, why bother? I am re-balancing anyways so why not take out the problem children when I have the opportunity. |

What is focused expertise? Are you also dropping the magic counterparts? (implement expertise, astral fire, dark fury, etc) I'm all in favor of removing feat taxes, but I recommend just granting every PC a +1 attack (scaling at higher levels) along with removing the expertise feats. They're supposed to be a math fix on WotC's part, since the rate of monster defenses goes up at a faster rate than PC attacks. At higher levels it's either my suggestion, make encounters easier with fewer/weaker monsters, or kill off PCs easier. The first option is more fun and less work. The same goes for paragon/robust defenses. The +damage feats I don't think should be removed. They're not must-have feats. You're just removing options from the players. |
