Ghoul Fever

Before 4e, PCs could turn into ghouls if they were bitten by one. In 3e, it was called ghoul fever. I was surprised to find that there is no such thing in 4e. So why not invent a new disease using the rules in the DMG page 49 as a guide?

Here's my suggestion:

-------------------------

Ghoul Fever Level 5 Disease
This disease is delivered through the bite of ghoul. After the victim dies, he becomes a ghoul.
Attack: See ghoul, Monster Manual, page 118.
Endurance improve DC 14, maintain 12, worsen 11 or lower

Disease Progression:
* Initial Effect The target is nauseous and is always down 1 HP.
* The target regains only half the normal number of hit points from healing effects. In addition, it takes 5 necrotic damage, which cannot be healed until the target is cured of the disease.
* Final State The target dies and rises as a ghoul at the subsequent midnight.

-------------------------

I threw these rules together in about 5 minutes. Perhaps some of you can think of some interesting ideas for 4e ghoul fever?

How about inclunding the "Turn into a ghoul" effect as s special.

"If the affected creature is reduced to 0 HP or less they immediately die. They reanimate as a ghoul at midnight the following night."

As it is your final stage is a save-or-die effect. And that is the ultimate no-no.

It's not a no-no in diseases. Check out Mummy Rot. It lso kills the target in the final stage. Slimy Doom will also likely lead to a swift death if you don't avoid combat. It's rare so far, but there is a precedent.

... Mummy Rot can...

A save-or-die here and there won't hurt. But that thing is a pain in the butt in the first place. That and ghouls are special. Very special. And low level. Very low level.

... Mummy Rot is enough auto-death for me. Where is Slimy Doom? Can't seem to find it.

and it just occured to me that I want to play as a Slaad...

Page 50 DMG. Wicked ongoing 30 necrotic (save ends) on the failed check, renewed each time you take damage.

Also, I see that Slaad's have an instant death disease as well.

I do think that the Enduracne DC's should be easiy than typical if you're going to make the instant death at the end. Although making the final effect an unremovable immobilize, with the death of the character triggering the transformation would be cool as well.

The entire party just can't throw it off and ends up becoming immobile in the middle of nowhere, slowly starving to death only to rise up as undead abominations.

And sonce Ghouls are the embodiment of unnatural hunger...

That is quite possibly the most awesome thought I have ever had.

Except the Perma Shapechanged Master Transmogrifist I had that one time...
