| #1vandenOct 25, 2008 3:26:40 | Here's my attempt at making everyone's favorite six-armed seeker of swords: Gilgamesh Level 14 Solo Skirmisher Medium Natural Humanoid Initiative +12 Senses Perception +15 HP 600 (Bloodied 300) AC 28; Fort 26; Ref 30; Will 26 Speed: 8 Fly Speed: 6 (clumsy) Saving Throws: +5 against all Action Points: 2 Slice Thrice (Standard; At-Will; Melee Basic) Gilgamesh slices with 3 of his blades at once; +18 vs. AC; 3d8 + 8 damage Slice Thrice Twice (Standard; At-Will) Gilgamesh makes two Slice Thrice attacks against two different targets Six-Point Strike (Standard; Recharge 5/6) Gilgamesh stabs with all six blades at once; Reach 2; +18 vs. AC; 6d8 + 16 damage Typhoon's Edge (Standard; Recharge 4/5/6) ♦ Teleport Gilgamesh leaps into the air in a tornado of blades, landing up to 6 spaces from his starting point; Primary Attack: Close burst 1 from starting point; +18 vs. AC; 4d8 + 8 damage and target is pushed 1 square; Secondary Attack: Close Burst 1 from landing point; +18 vs. AC; 2d8 + 8 damage and target is pushed 1 square Shield of Swords Melee attacks against Gilgamesh take a -2 to attack rolls Fast Attacker Gilgamesh can take 2 Standard Actions per turn without spending an action point Too strong? Too weak? Still needs his faithful companion Enkidou? |
| #2birdurshOct 25, 2008 13:48:35 | He's not bad. I'd give him a boost to some of his defenses, perhaps. I don't know what stats you've given him, but the Roc, a lvl 14 elite skirmisher, has mostly 30's. Even the negative to melee attacks means he's no harder to hit than the bird's base, quite possibly even easier if they target something other than AC, and to the rest of the party who attack from range he's about average for a standard skirmisher. I notice he's only got reach on one attack. You might consider giving him a bit more, if you really want to make him tear some adventurers up. Were I designing him, I'd be tempted to make all his swords do different things (like in FFVIII), but I like your guy. He just generally kicks butt. Love to see Enkidou as well. |
| #3RustmonsterOct 25, 2008 15:00:18 | I don't know why, but everytime I see the word "Gilgamesh", I instead read it as "Giggle-Mech". Now THAT'S a monster I want to see!:P |
| #4Horus_SungodOct 25, 2008 15:27:24 | It's a bit insane. He attacks 12 times a turn and can attack 18 times twice. I'd give him less attacks (by removing Fast attacker) and give him a minor action/immediate action attack instead. |
| #5vandenOct 25, 2008 18:15:00 | I intentionally gave him slightly lower defenses because he's capable of so many attacks per turn; I don't know if it's enough though. Naturally, if I use this guy, it's going to be a fight on a bridge, which will be only 4 squares wide. Coupled with his Large size and high speed, melee characters will have very little room to maneuver. If they managed to pin him, he uses Typhoon's Edge to move to a better position. Hmm... If I understood the cover mechanics better, I'd probably give him some way of transforming cover into superior cover for ranged attacks... |
| #6wyld_mutationOct 25, 2008 18:33:29 | I think the "three blades" bit is fluff so he only gets 4 attacks a turn (8 attacks once in the fight) That's not quite a Hydra in number, but he hits harder than the hydra. Why is he Paragon? He should be late epic (or even a lvl33 or 38). |
| #7vandenOct 25, 2008 18:41:05 | Because that's what level the players in my current campaign are now. :3 |
| #8wyld_mutationOct 25, 2008 20:13:46 | I suppose that is as valid a reason as any other. He needs a little more interruptiness, and considering the setup he's a brute not a skirmisher. Brutes hit hard with low defenses and a lot of health. Skirmishers have lots of movement. The teleport is skirmish-y but it's outweighed by the sheer number of attacks he gets. |
| #9vandenOct 25, 2008 20:22:33 | Okay, how about this: Running Blades (Move Action (Special); At-Will) Gilgamesh can make a melee basic attack against any target that comes within range during his Move Actions as a Standard action; if this attack hits, the target cannot make an opportunity attack against Gilgamesh. Agility Gilgamesh can receive cover from allies of attackers. |
| #10vandenNov 21, 2008 2:14:15 | Today my players fought the level 14 Gilgamesh at level 12. It was a very good fight; Gilgamesh got some good hits in and really made them feel the pressure, but they managed to win without anyone dying. His strategy was to hit two melee attackers with Slice Thrice Twice, then chase after any ranged attackers without fear of Opportunity attacks from the Defenders. With his high speed and often-recharging teleport, he certainly felt very Skirmishy. Now, you can't fight Gilgamesh just once of course, so I've gone and made a level 20 version which should be much tougher. Level 20 Gilgamesh Gilgamesh Level 20 Solo Skirmisher Medium Natural Humanoid XP 14000 Initiative +20 Senses Perception +20 HP 900 (Bloodied 450) AC 34; Fort 32; Ref 36; Will 32 Speed: 10 Fly Speed: 8 (clumsy) Saving Throws: +5 against all Action Points: 2 Slice Thrice (Standard; At-Will; Melee Basic) ♦ Swords Gilgamesh slices with 3 of his blades at once; +26 vs. AC; 3d10 + 11 damage, and the target cannot take opportunity actions until the start of Gilgamesh's next turn Slice Thrice Twice (Standard; At-Will) Gilgamesh makes two Slice Thrice attacks against two different targets Six-Point Strike (Standard; Recharge 5/6) ♦ Swords Gilgamesh stabs with all six blades at once; Reach 2; +26 vs. AC; 6d10 + 22 damage Typhoon's Edge (Standard; Recharge 4/5/6) ♦ Swords, Teleport Gilgamesh leaps into the air in a tornado of blades, landing up to 8 spaces from his starting point; Primary Attack: Close burst 1 from starting point; +26 vs. AC; 4d10 + 15 damage and target is pushed 1 square; Secondary Attack: Close Burst 1 from landing point; +26 vs. AC; 2d10 + 7 damage and target is pushed 1 square Shield of Swords Melee attacks against Gilgamesh take a -2 penalty to attack rolls Fast Attacker Gilgamesh can take 2 Standard Actions per turn without spending an action point Running Blades (Move Action (Special); At-Will) Gilgamesh can use Slice Thrice (or Slice Thrice Twice if two enemies come into range at once) against any target that comes within range during his Move Actions as a Standard action Agility Gilgamesh can receive cover from allies of attackers. Six-Armed Riposte ♦ Swords Enemies that miss a melee attack against Gilgamesh while adjacent to him are subject to an attack; +26 vs. AC; 1d10 + 4 damage Dangerous Blades ♦ Swords Enemies that start their turn adjacent to Gilgamesh are subject to an attack; +26 vs. AC; 1d10 + 4 damage Six Arms, Six Swords Whenever Gilgamesh uses a power with the Swords keyword, roll 1d6. The attack is modified by one of the following six swords corresponding to the result of the roll: 1 - Lightning Blade (Lightning): All damage from the attack is lightning damage 2 - Ice Brand (Cold, Slow): All damage from the attack is cold damage, and the target is slowed (save ends) 3 - Flame Saber (Fire): All damage from the attack is fire damage, and the target takes ongoing 5 fire damage (save ends) 4 - Tempest (Force): All damage from the attack is force damage, and the target is pushed two squares 5 - Excalibur (Radiant): All damage from the attack is radiant damage, and the target takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls (save ends) 6 - Zantetsuken: +1d10 damage, and the target gains vulnerable 5 to all damage (save ends). Saving throws against this effect take a -2 penalty to rolls |
| #11demiteddybearNov 21, 2008 3:09:42 | I have a question about six point strike, but is it just me or is there no real difference between that and slice thrice twice other than it having a reach of two? I would have expected a recharge power to have slightly more kick or even a different effect, or am I misreading your intention? |
| #12vandenNov 21, 2008 3:19:05 | With Slice Thrice Twice, Gilgamesh can't target the same target with both of his Slice Thrice attacks. Six-Point Strike allows him to essentially attack the same target twice with one standard action. A few good hits from that attack will probably take out a character (especially since Gilgamesh loves to go after squishier, ranged attacker types), so I gave it a recharge so he couldn't just use it to easily take out a single PC. After all, it's no fun when your character is taken out early on. |
| #13demiteddybearNov 21, 2008 3:26:20 | Ah ofcourse, I missed that bit from slice thrice twice. Well then its fine then. I do like it, especially the six arms, six swords effect. |
| #14AryxbezNov 24, 2008 23:10:28 | Fast Attacker So does that mean he can take 2 standards instead of a move actions, thus do Standard, Standard, minor and done? Or does that mean he gets an extra standard action per round? If it's the first, I can see that being ok, as he risks not moving for the round, just to be bring one hell of a wallop on two foes. Or whatever have Mr.Gilgamesh do with a second standard action. Now it's like he's on 3.0 Haste, then I can see that being a bit powerful. As he moves in, flying or whatever have he, and become a blender of blades to two foes. So If it wasn't already, I'd suggest it being a action substitution, instead of a second move action, it can be a standard action and such. I would guess that Gilgamesh is fine, although I think he's more in line with being a soldier or Brute role as defined in monster roles of 4th edition. I would imagine those extra 4 arms being able to be distracting to a foe, holding his quarries back and such. Or Brute just hailing a avalanche of steel, mithril, admantine, and other metals the weapons are composed of. Also because, he doesn't really do the whole go in go out, or heavy amounts of moving around. He seems to stay where he is generally, beating his enemies with the awesome might of his 6 arms. This is a personal thing to me, but I find that Typhoon's Edge ability is a bit silly. With the doing of a blade tornado copter, that flies elsewhere in the battle. Also the Fly speed I think is peculiar, does he do a copter with his weapons as well? Which again I'd find pretty darn silly, doing this whole Yoshimitsu meets 6 arms copter sword thing. Speaking of weapons, didn't he have multiple kinds? such as wielding an ax, glaive, mace, a falchion, long or greatsword and such? I think one could use those for ideas on the random effect roll of the 20th level Gilgamesh, also what of ExcaliPur? (P emphasized) Didn't he have that sword before he got the real mighty power of Excalibur? It would be funny to see, rolling that, and he only does 1 damage to everyone or something like that. Even more of a hoot, if someone got Excalipur, and being somewhat cursed to hold unto such a useless sword. However I do like Gilgamesh, both the poem of the sumerian/babylonian mythological version, and the Final Fantasy one that is intended here. Of course I haven't really played much FF games where I saw him in, such as I've not played enough of FFV to meet him yet. Only in the FF I-II Dawn of Souls for the GBA have I truly played and fought against Gilgamesh. Thus although I don't really know all of Gilgamesh, so for all I know, he has this peculiar tornado sword attack of sorts. |
| #15vandenNov 24, 2008 23:55:29 | Gilgamesh gets 2 Standard actions, 1 Move action, and 1 minor action to do with as he pleases. In practice, it wasn't too powerful; in fact it felt downright balanced. This interpretation is mainly based on his FFXII appearance. In FFXII, he can fly, hence the fly speed. Plus, it's great for having him escape. After all, Gilgamesh can't die, he can only be chased off temporarily. I even stole the name of his melee basic attack from FFXII. (Also, he's not flying when he uses Typhoon's Edge, he's just jumping. While spinning.) Gilgamesh as I've laid him out is definitely a skirmisher, if you play him with the proper strategy. As an entirely melee-focused monster, the biggest threat to him are ranged attackers, and Gilgamesh knows this. That's why his strategy is to hit melee attackers enough to disable their opportunity actions and then use his high speed and/or teleporting powers to pursue the ranged attackers. As for him having multiple different swords - that's part of the level 20 version I posted - did you not see it? EDIT: Oh wait, you meant him having multiple different kinds of WEAPONS, not swords. No, Gilgamesh as we know him is pretty much a hardcore sword collector these days. Oh, and the whole Excalipur/poor thing happened in FFV, his first appearance, when he was just a newb. This is the far more experienced Gilgamesh who's managed to travel across four different Final Fantasy settings and into your D&D campaign. He knows a good sword when he sees one. Presumably he still has Excalipur/poor, though, so you could give it to an unlucky player if you wanted. Me, I gave them a gunblade-lighsaber-chainsaw, which is a gunblade with a chainsaw blade where the sword part should be, and each of the teeth on the chainsaw's chain is a small lightsaber. Sadly, as soon as they tried to use it, it "disappeared in a puff of ridiculousness." |
| #16AryxbezNov 25, 2008 1:03:07 | Ah, FFXII, the only FF game, where you don't have to ever play the game again to progress... As far as escaping, all things sometimes have to die, even Gilgamesh is no exception. However, how does he fly? Is he like Superman now, just given random flight? Although I know ye said nowadays, and thus probably does apply in the future Final Fantasy's. However Gilgamesh started out as a weapon collector/master of sorts. His FFV image for example. Most definitely, FFVIII and FF 9 were the ones that changed Gilgamesh into the whole I'm Goro meets Sword collector. http://www.ffcompendium.com/h/espmon/gilgamesh.shtml Have to say, I like the FFV version better, of course I do like your Gilgamesh. Just it would be nifty to see some Fighter weapon related powers in the 1d6 thing, of course I'd how to make the weapon effects different from each other. What with his FFV version wielding an ax, flail, glaive, sword and so forth. Although I do think the apparent 8 arms, or the 2 extra arms, are uneeded addition to this original Gilgamesh. I have to say, the chainsaw thing was truly beyond sillyness, a joke is a joke I suppose. Not sure if I'd ever use Gilgamesh in my campaign, Excalipur and such, who knows. Also in the game Metal Saga, there was a cyborg that I think was based off of the Final Fantasy Gilgamesh. It basically had many arms, guns, a missile cannons, and it collected weapons. Not to mention, you fought it on a bridge. So my apologies to get a little off topic with the ramblings about Gilgamesh, if need be I can delete the off topic chatter, and just have the rest actually dealing with the creature at hand if need be. |
