The World
So, I don't know how everyone else out there operates, but personally when I'm starting a new campaign setting, I like to get at least a general picture of the world; What is it like?, Who's in it?, and Why is it unique?

I'd generally start with that last one, "Why is it unique?" well... more exactly, I'd start with "how is it unique?" "Why" implies that it is a static structure easily described, "how" implies a process. Anywho, I ramble.

You gave a few ideas, but in my mind that question still stands, what makes your world unique? The fact that you are able to relate your story elements to a landmark science fiction movie series and a deriviative fatasy novel (I like Eragon and the Inheretance series, don't get me wrong, but original it ain't) should be a tip off that those elements aren't unique.

That is fine, fantasy tropes are tropes for a reason. They are beloved. So a good step down and something to aim for is "How is it interesting?"

So what in your world is interesting?

Very good advice. I like it. For interesting, check out the post I'll put up later today about the Towers of Umberguard.
