| #1undergroundplayerFeb 14, 2011 13:56:19 | So after having spent months working a world in its birth I have desided to switch to a world that is controlled by Demons, Devils, and Dragons. Influnces for this world are - Hellboy - Hellgate: London - Diablo - DDO: The Chronoscope adventure - M:tG Jund and Grixis Mental Imagry: You look up to the sky and there are dark clouds, smoke, and silloettes of monsterous beings. You hear screams not to far off and the laughter of some tormentor. All around you are the ruins of a world long forgotten. Gathering what little you have you start off looking for somewhere safer to lay your head. You are in a world with out a future, with out safety. You are in a world that is a living hell. Notable Points: - there are no known gods - any history of what the world was is long gone as far as anyone knows - tieflings and dragonborn are allies and slightly lesser races in the eyes of the controlling demons dragons and devils - if you are not apart of the controlling races subservants you are marked for death or worse - there is a strong running caste system - hope is near nonexsistant - dragonmarks do exsist Common themes - survival - the search for hope - damnation - anti-heroism Possible Inclusions - Charactor Themes (like Dark Sun) |

These places should exist in some form or another in your world, since they already have good background information that you could steal and modify to suit your needs. Personally, I wouldn't limit the races or power sources, though I can see divine magic being quite rare, and in most cases, quite miraculous (which could make for an interesting character or two). Most mortal races would be quite sparse and, aside from the subservient tieflings and dragonborn civilizations, reduced to tribalism and roving mixed race bands of refugees. However, the Demons, Devils and Dragonstm would want slaves, chattel and worshippers and would not kill the mortal races on sight, though any resistance would not be tolerated. This leads to additional enclaves of demon/devil/dragon worshipping cultists that sometimes exist as independent communities. Woe to the prisoner who is dragged into one of these camps. Slaving gangs wage turf wars along the borders of these lands, occaisonally assissted by their patrons. For the most part, however, the Demons, Devils and Dragonstm are far too involved in the Blood War to care much about the remnants of mortal civilization. The Blood War The Devils seek to subjugate the entire world, no longer content to manipulate it from the shadows as in ancient times. They march out legions of devils and construct towering fortresses across the lands, constructing twisted edifices out of the ruins of mortal civilization. The devil generals and commanders warp the lands they conquer to their liking, a slow but noticeable process that tinges the landscape with evil. The legions pave enormous highways with the blood and bones of their foes, leading to the deepest recesses of hell where Asmodeus rules from his crimson throne... at least, most suppose him too, though he hasn't been seen for centuries. Meanwhile, Demonic hordes rage across the lands, devastating and bastardizing any remaining semblence of normal life. Despite their complete and utter disunity, the demonic hordes routinely break through the Devil lines, and even in Devil territory one is likely to find demons and their minions. Powerful demonic warlords rise and fall, sending shockwaves of disorder and chaos through their hordes. A demonfall is a particularly dangerous time follwing the death of a demon lord, as all demons view this as an opportunity to reestablish a new pecking order. Particularly clever and powerful demons will use the momentum generated by these The Ancient Dragons, the last remaining mortal powerhouse, are actually a disparate group of individuals and their supporting servants. They play the devils and demons off against each other, knowing they cannot withstand the sustained assault of either forces. Though they more often end up working with devils, they are usually found along the frontier of the demonlands. The ancient great Wyrms are a match for most major demon and devil lords, though their resources are considerably less and they must pick their fights well. Generally they see that demon hordes and devil legions engage in mutual destruction with each other, and have been forced to retreat more than their pride would have them admit. Due to the horrible cataclysm that ended the gods, the Blood War now occurs on most planes. Despite the massive numbers of devils and demons, they are spread wide across the planes, and there are now a fair number of 'the lost', demons, devils, as well as former angels and fey that roam the planes, looking for freedom or simply respite. For the most part, they care not for mortals, but will use them, if it suits their needs. The lost also include individual monsters that originally served one side or another, but deserted or were abandoned. They view mortals predominantly as a source of sustenance. The frontlines of the Blood War contain they highest concentration of Demons and Devils, though the frontlines would appear to be maze of interconnected strings rather than lines on a map. Still, there are plenty of small pockets that are unoccupied or ignored by either side. Despite the horrendous effects of the Blood War, most learned men would acknowledge that it would be worse for one side to win the Blood War than if it were to continue. Additional Themes: War is hell Evil for the sake of good Mercenary/headhunting |
| #5undergroundplayerFeb 15, 2011 8:51:16 | What would be a good source to read up on the Blood War? Devas are the only race I am having issues with forming in to this world and that is do to what Devas were made as. Devine classes I am currently still tweeking as to how to fit them in. I am leaning towards making them "cult" classes. Though I am hoping that Heroes of Shadow will have some help into this. On the notation of cattle, slaves and such that is actually the invisioned base for everything. To generalized what this world is in my head, There are two kinds of people Those who are working for the demons, dragons, and devils, and those that are looking for some form of safety. With such notions the latter types of people would be more consistantly on the run, trying to find something anything to protect them from the world as it is, and possibly trying to find clues to the past. |

| #14Tech-PriestFeb 16, 2011 10:30:25 | There's a 3.5 book, the Book of Fiends from a 3rd party source I believe, it will do wonders for what you're looking for. Demons, Devils, Daemons, you name it, that book has it, hierarchy and everything you could ask for. |
| #15bone_nagaFeb 17, 2011 10:45:02 | There's a 3.5 book, the Book of Fiends from a 3rd party source I believe, it will do wonders for what you're looking for. Demons, Devils, Daemons, you name it, that book has it, hierarchy and everything you could ask for. I believe that one is from Green Ronin. Even though it's a 3.5 books I still use it for inspiration for lore and new monsters for 4e (I really like the way they presented Daemons, much more interesting than the bland mercenary theme). I also use the rulers of hell that they have presented over the official ones (they are pretty similar but the Green Ronin ones have more biblical/mythological basis to them). I also like the Encyclopedia of Demons and Devils 1 and 2 (and the Encyclopedia of Angels). They are also 3.5 books from Fast Forward Entertainment. They are pretty obscure and much harder to find than the Book of Fiends (which is actually 3 books rolled into one). The actual stats in the books are horrendous (Lucifer and Asmodeus are weaker than some of the non-unique devils but are somehow rulers of hell, theres a CR 6 creature that has DR 30/+3, just really bad design overall) but all the monsters are drawn from various myths and legends so it does provide a wealth of ideas and inspiration. |
