| #1jobbutJul 30, 2008 8:18:14 | What would the stats and mechanics be for a DnD GunBlade like Leon's? 1. I'm Thinking +3 Prof (Superior Weapon), 1D6 Ranged, 2D4 Melee, 15/30 Range, How would it work though? 2. I'm Thinking +3 Prof (Superior Weapon), Fires Magic Missles, 2D4 Melee, 20 Range |
| #2SinasilverJul 30, 2008 13:33:16 | What would the stats and mechanics be for a DnD GunBlade like Leon's? I would suggest finding the thread with guns. It also included a bayonet. I think it was called the firearms workshop or something, anyway, it seemed to do a good job, and would allow for some variety. In FF8 I believe two kinds of gunblades are explained in minor detail, and the more common version does not actually fire rounds, and could actually be accurately represented by the High-Crit property. |
| #3machmothJul 30, 2008 13:41:40 | Hmm, that could be a bit of a tough one. As I understand, historically and in Leon's case, the gunblade doesn't shoot as a normal gun would. Their accuracy is nothing to write home about, unless that letter goes "I didn't shoot anyone today". Typically, the gun is fired after stabbing someone, at point blank range, to increase the severity of the blow. If the gun was fired alone, it wouldn't be done more than a few steps away. The way I'd go about it would be to try and wedge it into the existing rules and abstract it. I would use an exotic weapon with stats based on whatever sword it is modeled after (we'll say 1d8 heavy-blade with the versatile property), and add the high crit property. The high crit represents critical hits being solid blows that open the target up for an extra, undodgeable gunshot. It's probably overly simplified for what you might be hoping for, but it avoids any need for special rules. Edit: Yeah, what Sinasilver said. |
| #4koukJul 30, 2008 14:23:26 | I agree with just flavoring the high-crit as the gunshot. Only on a critical hit are conditions favorable enough to pull the trigger and expect a hit. You could make it a high-crit superior greatsword or longsword, though I would say +2 proficiency bonus only. Or, you could go the enchantment route and have the normal weapon enchanted with a property which deals extra damage per plus on a crit. There are several ways you could do that, including just using a Vicious weapon as-is. I think the less actual tinkering you do with the base weapons, the better. I might be inclined to make a magical version a level 6+ enchantment; 1d8 per plus on crits, and 1/day you can shoot for weapon damage as a ranged attack to a range of 5/10 with an additional [w] damage. Something like that. |
| #5jobbutJul 30, 2008 16:14:32 | Well, How about a 1/ Encounter Fires a 2D4 shot? Current Stat Ideas: Rates :D ![]() 1D8 Versatile high crit. Rating Why: Might as well picked up a greataxe1D10 Versatile, Once encounter Shot dealing 2D4. Rating: :D Whay: Gets What i think what should be a GunBlade and quite good, balanced for the superior. Or two Types (Or two Modes a magic enchant?) 1: 1D10, Versatile High Crit 2: 1D8, Versatile Ranged attack? |
| #6koukJul 30, 2008 17:56:19 | Well, How about a 1/ Encounter Fires a 2D4 shot? But a Bastard Sword is just a plain 1d10 versatile Superior Weapon. Your version 1 is clearly superior. |
| #7jobbutJul 30, 2008 18:09:13 | Bastard sword was kinda a bad item. I'd rather use a great axe, that is 1D12 and high crit Same +2 Prof. or +3 Prof for superior so it isnt just equal to it. i mean the feat should be worth it. |
| #8machmothJul 30, 2008 18:10:15 | If you're talking balance, a 1d8 one-handed heavy blade with +3 proficiency, high crit, and versatile is already slightly better than every weapon on the chart, including the axes (which is likely why Kouk suggested a +2 proficiency bonus). What you're suggesting is most definitely in the realm of a magic item with a per encounter power, which is actually very powerful. If that is what you want to use, then by all means, but be aware that that is what it is, and you would not give it to a level 1 character at creation if you were trying to maintain a balanced game. |
| #9jobbutJul 30, 2008 18:59:43 | FINAL PRODUCT (Flame it up!) 1D8, High Crit, Versitile, 1/E 2D4 ranged attack. |
| #10Cpt_MichaJul 30, 2008 23:33:58 | What would the stats and mechanics be for a DnD GunBlade like Leon's? +3 Prof, Superior, 1d8, High Crit is how I would do it. |
| #11ocarina_guyJul 30, 2008 23:48:42 | I could have sworn that the gunblade never actually shot any round, just vibrated for extra damage. Wouldn't know for sure; my source was Wikipedia. I've never played any Final Fantasy except X and Tactics Advance, so... |
| #12jobbutJul 31, 2008 8:25:03 | Good games, Loved the system for X and tactics, well Two words, Last Breath, and Rockseal. but my favorite game is still TWEWY Off Topic:I posted in the RP RESPOND! |
| #13wyld_mutationAug 02, 2008 12:55:31 | My take: Gunblade 2H, Superior Weapon, Heavy Blade +3 Proficiency, 1d8, High Crit Cost: GP 30 Weight 8 lbs. Any objections? Special: The following feat. Longshot Requirement: Gunblade Proficiency Effect: You may make a ranged attack with a gunblade. Doing so the weapon has a +2 proficiency bonus deals 1d6 damage and loses the high crit property. It has a range of 5/10 Reworded: Longshot Requirement: Gunblade Proficiency Effect: You may use gunblades in a new way. It gains the following weapon entry. Gunblade 2H, Superior, Ranged +2 Proficiency, 1d6 Damage, Ranged 5/10 |
| #14NovacatAug 02, 2008 13:35:43 | Keep your blasted Final Fantasy out of my D&D! But seriously, gunblades are a terrible idea for a weapon. So awkward, terrible aesthetics, and totally pointless. |
| #15wyld_mutationAug 02, 2008 13:50:56 | Really? How about a shotgunblade? You take your sword, I'll take by Gunblade, we'll see who wins. And if all else fails the following feat: Longshot Requirement: Gunblade Proficiency Effect: You may make a ranged attack with a gunblade. Doing so the weapon has a +2 proficiency bonus deals 1d6 damage and loses the high crit property. It has a range of 5/10 Now take me on! :D There's nothing wrong with adding some more "fantastic" weapons to the game so long as they are roughly balanced against the other weapons. The gunblade really is just a suped-up scimitar. Oh and the gunblade now has a group in my previous post. |
| #16NovacatAug 02, 2008 13:58:00 | Really? How about a shotgunblade? How about you take your Gunblade, and I take my Mayor Hagar, and we'll see who gets his face ruined. |
| #17wyld_mutationAug 02, 2008 13:59:41 | Sorry that one was lost on me... But now that I've come up with the rules these things are going into my game. Just have to get them in... Too bad my Kobold can't use one. ![]() |
| #18NovacatAug 02, 2008 14:05:27 | Mayor Hagar, from the Final Fight video-game series, is a sort of old-school Chuck Norris (before Chuck Norris notoriety). Mayor Hagar suplexes sharks for fun. In any case, why not have your kobold become a pirate, wield a gunblade, and ride around the world on a cyborg kung-fu master tyranosaurus while fighting off a legion of laser-toting ninja cowboys so you can finally defeat the robot zombie king? |
| #19wyld_mutationAug 02, 2008 14:21:26 | What's with the hate? I was going more for Cowboy than "totally tripping" It's house-rules; we don't need hate, we need honest critique. And anyway... I made the Gunblade 2H so that small creatures don't have the "when it fires do I fall down" question. |
| #20NovacatAug 02, 2008 14:27:41 | What's with the hate? Not hating. Just joking. I do hate gunblades, but I'm not seriously trying to make you feel bad for trying to stat them. Plus, I wanted an excuse to use pirate, ninja, zombie, robot, tyrannosaur, laser, and kung-fu in the same sentence. |
| #21wyld_mutationAug 02, 2008 14:37:43 | Yah my comment was mostly sarcasm. Just a little miffed that you aren't offering any real critique is all. Why do you hate gunblades anyway? As an idea to implement in the game they seem kinda cool. I'm a FF fanboy so you'll have to bear with me. I'm also a sorceror and Changeling (read any transmutation effect) fanboy so I can get... ADD is the word you think? Definitely ADD. |
