I wish I could have come up with a better name but nothing came to mind. Just as well, it's pretty self explanatory: it's a Deep (Purple) Dragon hybrid... probably with human since apparently that's what every half-thing is halves with. Undecided It's not drow because... shut up, that's why. Tongue out Seriously, though, it's not drow because I started on this idea due to a story where it didn't involve a drow. *gasp* Plus I'm sick to death of drows. Laughing
And it's not a bloodline or a theme because I wanted to start from scratch instead of tacking something onto an existing race. Pick at that as you will, but if half elves and half orcs and stuff get their own races, why not? Though I'm sure with a little bit of fiddling, it can become a bloodline/theme without much trouble but that would have to wait for another time or someone else to work it out because, gosh darn it, I want a race! Yell

Anyway, if anyone has a good suggestion for a name, please toss it out here.

I would have put things like Radiance vulnerability (Deep/Purple Dragons are harmed by sunlight) but you just don't give penalties for 4e races so... yeah. Despite dragons having flight, I did not put any flying or hovering in anything here. Flight's just one of those things that tends to get highly debated on so I avoided it entirely. I did, however, do something with the tail instead... which could, in turn, end up being highly debatable. Innocent

Anyhow, PEACH! Wink Feel free to rip it apart for balancing, just don't be rude about it. And I would greatly appreciate it if you explained your reasoning or gave suggestions beyond "this is over/under powered, fix it." Obviously, this is a constant work in progress so please come check back whenever you have time to see how things are shaping up.

Thank you for your feedback. Changes are continuing to be made as they come.

Edit: I have decided to make it into a pdf so I don't have to edit 20 different posts/blogs/whatever just because I make changes.

View it here.

1. Why speed seven?
2. Lowlight vision would be acceptable here given that deep dragons have a supernatural connection to the darkness.
3. The special line goes in the power.
4. The power should probably just use primary ability score.
5. The most common deep dragon hybrid is drow, maybe that might be a better default humanoid parent?

6. Why a race, why not a theme or bloodline?

Ugh... so I'm reduced to ferrying messages back and forth between people now. (Sorry, not your fault, just had to complain)

So the argument a couple of my acquaintances are saying is that it still seems too weak. They're comparing it to dragonborn's dragonfear. In comparison, the combat advantage on this is only used by you as opposed to everyone, and the penalty is only for certain attacks, not all attacks. Plus, this only targets one compared to dragonfear's "each enemy in burst." The only advantage this one has is that you can avoid OAs and IAs from that one enemy on your turn which they say doesn't make up for the lack of targets, full CA, and full attack penalty.

I think that your acquaintances are underestimating the awesomeness of being totally immune to an enemy's OAs and IAs for a whole turn. That said, I was mostly comparing this power to Dark-Fire and Shard-Swarm, but if Dragon-Fear is what you're comparing against, then I can sort of see the argument, and it is possible that I was being a bit too conservative before, as I tend to prefer to err on the side of caution when it comes to racial power. One of the following is probably not that bad:

Close burst 10
Target: One Creature in burst.
Hit: The target is dazed until the end of your current turn and grants combat advantage until the end of your next turn.

Close blast 3
Target: All creatures in blast.
Hit: The target is dazed until the end of your current turn.

Made a bunch of changes, got rid of the posted text, made it into a pdf. It was rather annoying having to edit stuff all over the place whenever I made a change.

Anyhow, yeah. See first post for the pdf link.

I also seem to notice that there's been no word on anything beyond the basic race. I'm sure there's stuff that may or may not be wildly over/under powered in there and it'd be great to get some feedback on those too.
