Handedness

Anyone here using handedness in their 4e game?

If I recal, we used to roll d6 and d20 to determine handedness.  If the rolls were the same the character was ambidexterious .  If the d6 roll was higher than the d20 roll the character was left handed.

The reason I want to use this in my game is that I can think of several situations were it might be important.

For example, fighting on castle stairs.  As you know castle stairs were build and designed to be defensible.   Attackers would typically be at a disadvantage if they were right handed since stairs would turn to the right.      I want to use this fact in my game and give right handed characters and npcs a -2 for cover.

If you want that level of simulation in your game, go for it... just throw your lefthanded (if any) players a bone occasionally so that being lefthanded isn't just all penalty.

This seems like needless complexity (and needless arbitrariness) for a highly situational issue. Why not simply treat anyone at a higher elevation on the staircase as having cover if it's so well-built for defense?
