Has anyone allowed players to have 3 at wills?

Just wondering what people thought of the idea of allowing players to have 3 at wills (4 in humans case)

Would work better for classes with their support book (or two in Martial classes case)

It wouldn't really unbalance things too much would it?

Also thought about letting everyone have 2 options per encounter power and daily power. (although that could be a lot of paper work).

Has anyone tried either of these ideas?

Haven't tried either, but I can't see a problem with giving everyone an extra at-will. If your players are into the bookkeeping, I don't see any problem with that either. (Although, how would that work with wizards?)

I guess wizards could have 3 or 4 options for their dailies. Probably 3.

I already let the wizard choice which daily they cast on the fly, (to make it a bit better). Seems more in line with old school wizardry.

The only thing I can see if holy ****, psionic characters get a lot of options.

Yeah I do that too. Smile

I tried it, and for the most part it makes no difference. Most classes have only 2 at-wills that they use all the time, and by the time you hit paragon tier you have so many encounterpowers that the third at-will rarely comes into play.

Interesting.

Obviously would be better for contoller classes and to a lesser degree leaders, I can certainly see a wizard or an Invoker getting some joy out of using 3 at wills.

Hmmm... just thought of druids. They already get 3 don't they. So it would be 4 for them 5 if human.

Not at all. At-Will powers are more like little bonuses the Class(es) get which express their flavour and style. An extra At-Will, or even more, will not unbalance the game so fret not. I also houserule that all Class(es) start with an extra At-Will power, so no harm, and no foul.

Beware of hybrid non-Psionic/Psionic characters....

if you allow that they will have more power points that just plain Psionic characters Starting off since they are based off of how many At-wills you have.

I dont see a problem, just the PHB3 had to make it so that a humans extra At-will did not do what your rule allows (humans loose the power to augment their Extra At-will page 216 PHB3 there fore it does not count towards your power point total... I think thats the page)

because if you allow it a half psionic character can have in general more power points equalling to more Encounter level powered  At-wills.

A very good point, and one of the reasons a responsible GM would take note of the situation and ensure that power abuse wasn't taking place.

An extra at-will was one of the first house rules we ever implemented. We liked the extra flavor it provided, and like other posters have mentioned. You only have so many rounds an encounter, my player's rarely even use at-wills at this point. The extra at-will just gives them a cool little ability they can always do that sort of helps flesh out what sort of PC they're making.

I'd love to know why only druids get the advantages of 3 at-wills?  Seems like a power gamer's dream, doesn't it?  Well, a small dream in the grand scheme of things, but certainly a nice bonus :P

What are the mechanical reasons?  What are the flavor reasons?  Just curious what either or both may be.

Ban psionics and it solves that problem.

Because one of them will be of limited use due to Wild Shape.  Most druids either spend all their time in combat, and thus have two beast-form at-wills and one other (which they rarely use), or vice versa.  If a druid only had two at-wills in general, functionally, they'd only have one.

I've considered characters not gaining other at-wills as they level to be odd. I'd give characters one extra at-will for a feat slot (but no more than one).

...which reduces viable options for your D&D game. Keep psionics and treat the extra at-will like a human racial feat (pg. 216 of PHB3) if you think that grants them too many power points.

why not simply use the powerpoint chart provided reguardless of actual number of at wills they have, so they might for say have every at will in the book guess there versitile but they still have to choose when to use there very limited power points.

though honestly most players prety much choose just a single at will for malee and a single for ranged it could be fun to allow them to have all the at wills or any number betwean only reason encounters and dailies are so limited is becouse there stronger then your basic attack however any number of same class at wills would not be unbalenceing as for humans you could always let them have a at wil from anouther class liek the half elf except let them keap it as a at will (makes up for the fact that humans only get +2 stat bonus and no racial as aposed to the +4 that other races get)

at will powers are very small effect on the game and can add a lot of flavor though I don't do this becouse my players print there chars and I would hate to print that many extra powers lol
