| #1gorditobanditoJul 31, 2008 14:57:32 | I'm running a haunted house dungeon (for lack of a better word) and I wanted some creative weird encounters/traps/puzzles that you guys have maybe used or wanted to use in the past. what I have so far is: a room where halflings dart in an out of paintings striking the PC's before returning a staircase with attitude that requires a skill challenge to get to the top your token creepy little girl who summons some illusions to do her bidding a pair of wise cracking doppleganger ghosts who can possess people a room that twists and shifts constantly making traversing, let alone fighting, difficult and mr big bad boss ghost along that theme anybody got any crazy encounters to throw in? |

There are doors and such along the corridor, and on both walls in between each mirror, are torch sconces. Here is the creepy thing. A successful perception check (or a Will save) will allow the PC to see that, even though there is torch light in the corridor, the torches are unlit. However, the torches ARE lit in the reflection of the mirrors. It may harbor an ominous secret, or it may just be a fun little enchantment that the previous owner had set. |

And the doors are made of real mirrors, just to make it more freaky. "on the other side of the door is a hall of mirrors, but as you step in, you notice something... something is wrong with the mirrors, wait is that your back you see." |

A spot check shows that the bedspread seems to have irregular blue spots along the edges near the floor. The room also contains the ghost of a female bard, who tries to convince a male to lie down with her on the bed. That yellow dust is really yellow mold. Lying on it cannot be good for a being that breathes. If unable to convince someone to lie down on the bedspread, the ghost uses telekinesis to hurl the bedspread at the PCs, filling the room with spores and maybe killing the whole party. -------------- The following particulars are based on 3.x in the SRD. A 7th level bard ghost, with a focus of vocal music (so she didn't need to die with her instrument in hand) would be nasty, especially as saves for the ghost's attacks are calculated based on Charisma. The bard is likely to have access to 3d level spells (presuming Charisma is 16 or higher), plus the fascinate and suggestion bard songs. Her ghost abilities could be telekinesis (to throw the blanket and move things), horrific moan (fitting), and draining touch - note that as many bards have high Dexterity, draining touch is more likely to hit. The right mix of spells (and feats) could result in a very nasty series of encounters where the ghost watches and messes with the party, using assorted magics (and telekinesis) to trick, harm, or hinder the PCs before disappearing. ---------- I'm picturing an older house, with at least three stories, and a rounded tower attached - perhaps running to five stories. A one-story greenhouse attached to the back or side, and some moldering outbuildings (carriage house, stables, family cemetery, caretaker's cottage). Just imagine chasing some Dancing Lights across a rotted floor, only to fall a story or two. Hold Person affecting a PC as dire rats or a monstrous spider gnaws at him. I'm seeing some nasty killer plants in the greenhouse, with more vermin, besides. ------------ You've definitely given me some ideas as I answered your post. Thanks. |

Perhaps the paintings that're watching you could have ghosts/wraiths in them. Rattling chains and moaning, again could be a monster like a traphaunt that you can't see till attacks, till then it could just walk by and brush up against players or a trap where the sounds lure you into a smoky room, the fireplace could belch fire at you, chandaliers could fall on you, and so on. You could have a mad wraith or something similar whiper things in different players ears telling them to attack their friends. Oh so many ideas, I'll have to include a small haunted house in my module. Hope some of this sounded good. Edit: I found a good animated portrait made by Tonpa76 here: http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1076654 |
