Saw Hellboy 2: The Golden Army last night and I was amazed at the ideas and inspiration the movie gave me. I thought perhaps a few of you felt the same.

Hellboy = Tiefling

The setting = The Feywild

The Golden Army = Warforged

The Trollmarket = Feywild/ Sigil bordertown

Anyone else?

My son kept saying, "We have to stat that up"

I like the extending spear and the gear shift fight scene. I picture revolving board pieces, but I'm unsure how the handle the grid. I might need to go European for this one.

A lot of Feywild connection for this one. Good to see for background ideas and details.

The elemental was also very cool. Very cool idea and lots of blast effects when damaged.

I don't think Hellboy is a Teifling. I think he's a Cambion.
I also don't think the Golden Army are Warforged. Warforged are live, and the Golden Army seemed simply machine to me...

Hellboy is definitely not a tiefling, He's either a half fiend, or a demon/devil.
If you've seen the movie, you know he's got DR.
I'd say the setting would be D20 Modern, the best product that wizard have come out with yet.

The Troll Market scene has set my mind on what I want the Feywild to be like. The sheer otherworldliness of the very strange and alien creatures would set a wonderful mood. The Feywild never struck me as that "wild" in the MM, but that single scene held so much that was crazy and different; exactly the kind of crazy and different that the Feywild should be.

I couldn't agree more! I am in the beta stages of developing a campaign for a new 4e group and this film has sent me in an entirely different direction.

I rather like the idea of humanity not having a clue as to what goes on 'after dark' or in the 'wild uncharted' land beyond their respective borders.

Though excuting a campaign where heroes only have a few choices for race I think will be challenging. What player wants to be told they can only play humans?

I liked the idea of the truce between the elves and humans like they had in the movie.

Hellboy isn't a half anything, he's a full blown DEVIL, but one who was raised by humans. His mother was "technically" human (see Book 3: The Chained Coffin and Others), but that's how most devils are born in the Hellboy universe I gather.

His "true name" is Anung un Rama and he's the "favorite son" of one of the biggest, baddest princes of Hell.

He's also tied into the Hellboy Universes's Lovecraftian Mythos, the Ogdru Jahad, and the Right Hand of Doom is one of their artifacts.

All I know is that if I never see Guillermo Del Toro direct a D&D movie, then the universe is slightly less awesome than it could be.

I'm thinking the stats for a Balor work perfectly in 3ed, change the skills and equipment and losing all spell like and su abilities. maybe some levels in tough hero or a prestige class.

I don't know the demon or devil stats for 4ed, but we are just keeping the hit dice and ability modifiers.

You'd definately need to get rid of any active "powers" the Devil or Demon you're basing him off of has. Though he also doesn't have any demon/devil weaknesses because he refuses to accept his heritage and claim his true power (in the comics his crown waits in Pandemonium for him to claim it). Pretty much his only outright abilities are Strength, Speedy-Healing, Immunity to Fire and The R.H.O.D.

The cogs scene was a definite example, in my mind, of utilizing terrain features to make an encounter interesting.

Something I'm surprised no one has mentioned is Wink (the ogre's) mechanical fist on a chain. This would make an excellent magic item/component for warforged characters (a sort of 'ranged' battlefist power).

so he keeps the DR, Energy immunity and resistances (changed to however they work in 4ed), some Hit dice, Size category, and ability modifiers.
maybe a lowered int score.

All I want is the tooth fairies.

The movie was great and the creatures were amazing.

But all I want is to spring the tooth fairies on my players. If I can do that, I'll be happy.

That is how you use scary fey.

Maybe, HB is smarter in the Comic than he is in the movie. He's definately got good scores in History and Arcana.

I haven't seen the comic, but a Balor has 20 something int.
and 20 hit dice give allot of skill points.

Lowered int per the movie. In the comics he's a lot smarter.

My take on HB2 would be:

Hellboy = Cambion

Elves in HB2 = 4e Eladriin

Troll Market = Definitively Sigil

The Golden Army = Iron Golem+ (in truth I'd design a new magical construct)
