The store that my LFR group games at is having a pre-GenCon party on August 1st, lasting pretty much all day.  For that day I'd like to design something really cool for my LFR players as a non-sanctioned, one-off fun day.

What I'm looking at putting together is a level 30, 3-on-3 PVP arena event culminating in the top two teams being thrown at Empowered Orcus.  Story is not an issue.  I can come up with that fairly easily.  What I'm looking at are rules for the arena event to keep things on a (mostly) even plane the entire time.

The obvious first rule would be to limit the kinds of magic items available to just the base "magic weapon," "magic armor," "magic implement," and standard non-magical shields as well as an amulet of protection (all at +6, of course).  All other slots would be off-limits.  I'm trying to avoid crazy things occuring like items that allow burrowing, etc.

Another rule would place different traps in the arenas in which these fights are taking place.  This way we work to keep all characters in the action at all times - no one hangs out in the back for too long.

Any other suggestions you may have or even anecdotes from past experience would be great.

Have you given any thought to limiting the role / class combinations allowed?

In my experience with PVP, there are certain combinations that tend to absolutely dominate over most others. A leader/leader/defender team, for example, is going to be very difficult to take down. I've also seen killer rogue/fighter/fighter combos in the past.

That said, I've never played at level 30 before, so that's bound to change the dynamic. I'm sure the epic destinies throw everything out of whack anyway.

Not really, because I'm going to allow everyone to spin their regular characters up to level 30 for this event.

I'm also hoping to randomize the teams by picking their names from a hat.
