Inspired by this.

I want to have musical spider/construct pet for my 4e party. It's a group of 3 (ranger/archer, wizard, fighter), so i want it to have some minor bard like (leader) combat abilities. I don't want to have it be a full fledged character, but i want it to be useful to the party, enough so they don't just leave it behind.

a few thing i have thus far

1) it makes it's own strings from spider silk
2) it can emulate any string instrument
3) it has 4 "legs", but is a bit clumsy (speed 8, all but flat terrain is difficult for it)
4) it's relatively fragile and needs to be protected (14+lvl AC)
5) it can only communicate though music
6) it's attuned to vibrations (blind, tremor sense 10)

any other thought/suggestions?

I'd look at the bard preview if you can (i cant seem to find it myself) and look at some of its minor powers, and incorporate a few into your robot here. There's also a homebrew bard floating around. Possibly give it one or two of their at-wills.

I will say a 'party pet' isnt commonly left behind by the party, mine had a plant monster that just gurgled and clubbed things and one guy almost broke down in tears when it died.

That sounds really cool. There was a spider like that in a book called The Sea of Trolls, and I thought it was one of the coolest concepts in that book.

Just copy the Majestic Word Bard class ability for your little spider bard and you're set, really.

It's like having the healing of a leader in an amazing construct. Great concept btw. I may have to borrow it...

Yea, i think i'll give it Majestic Word, and Song of Rest.

It's also going to get theme songs for each player.

theme songs in general is always my favorite part of DMing...

Great Idea.
