| #1thegrognardSep 01, 2011 16:34:22 | I am about to start a 4E D&D campaign set in Neverwinter and I am working on the intro adventure. I am thinking about a skill challenge where the PCs attempt to search and cross the debris-filled waters under a section of ruined docks to find the hidden entrance to a bandit lair. I have a couple of questions. How can I make it interesting and exciting? Is it appropriate to have the PCs trigger a trap after a certain number of failed skill checks? If so, how would that work mechanically/ Any help or advice is appreciated! |

A skill challenge can be a good way to present this sort of scenario ![]() Have the first two checks, be they success or failure lead the PCs to the entrances location, and have the next two successes or next failure open the door. If the PCs fail, have the bandits ambush them in the first combat encounter area. Make it the opposite if the PCs succeed. This keeps things simple and makes success and failure weigh heavily on the PCs first fight of the campaign. Happy gaming ![]() |

If they fail, the ambush is an excellent choice, complete with a surprise round. If they succeed with 2 or more failures, then they can still encounter the bandits with normal initiative. If they succeed with 1 failure, they can detect the bandits approach and ambush them in return. If they succeed with no failures, the could evade the bandits altogether. |
