| #1the_gypsy_bastardAug 13, 2008 1:37:29 | I'm going to be starting a new game in a few weeks and looking over my worlds back story I think I'm missing something. To make a long story short the area in which they are in was split between the material world and that if the elemental chaos, the population eventually finds a way back but in the they find elemental or better yet primordial magic. when they return they find that a lot of the new found magic came with them as there are still sections that are half and half and there are people who seek to control and utilize this new source of power. Now I don't think that any of the PHB classes cover these new spell casters in any real sense or at least not to the standards I would like for my setting. I need help, I'm not vary good at starting things like this from scratch mechanically. I have the idea of what they are about but no idea how to really represent them in a balanced yet fun way. ANY help would be much appreciated, for example I don't even have a name for them yet. flame me if you want but I am a firm believer that things like this take many minds to be three dimensional. |

Is it more about the summoning of elementals or throwing fireballs around? Maybe you thought of it as just the power source, this would mean any arcane caster would be fine. If you think rather of people throwing elemental forces around, i would suggest starting with the Warlock and Hombrew a new pact. You could call it primordial power or somerthing alike. Make the pact featuring the most important points of your new type of magic. Keep most of the warlockpowers as they are and just change the keywords to fire, cold, etc. replace necrotic, etc. |

Warlock with different keywords would capture it well enough also. My battle sorceror has an elemental and a "force" build. Melee Striker on top of that. However if you switch out a couple of his class features he'd be a striker-wizard. Starting something from scratch.... What role do you need to fill? Striker; Controller? From there decide on a name and features, as well as spells. |

I don't know how much help this will be but... The 3rd custom class I'm creating for my campaign may resemble what you're looking for. In my case, I wanted a nature-oriented class (primal power source) which would not be focused on animals and plants, as the Druid always has been. I decided to create a class which is tied to the elemental processes of the world (storms, forest fires, winds, the earth, rivers, etc.). In my mind, this is different from being tied to "pure" elemental forces, and has more to do with the processes of this world, though many of these processes have an elemental aspect to them. I haven't come up with a name I really like yet... I've considered names like "earthmaster" and "worldchilde" but... meh. :P |
