| #1windspearMay 27, 2008 15:49:57 | Hey guys, I'm working on a new campaign world, and I need a timeline for it. I need your help. I need the first 1000 years of existance for my world, and I need stuff to put in them. It starts at 0, with the creation of the world by the over-god Cronos, and ends in 1000 with the arrival of the gods. Before the gods, there were just Cronos and the 7 sins and virtues (that's right, the christian ones...). What I know happens, is a big war between the sub-races, which starts at 52, and continues all the way to 1000, when the gods break it up. Cronos: The over-god, keeper of time, creator of the world and what not. He writes every thing that happens in a book, and every thing he writes happens. He decided to make the wolrd (tabula rasa) as an experiment, and decides to mettle as little as possible. A year is exactly like our years (I don't have names for months yet, so be free to make some up or do without them). Thanks alot! |

| #3smergMay 29, 2008 11:01:49 | Several years ago, I gave some help to a friend of mine that was writing a world with a 7 sin theme. The first thing we did was we sat down an looked at the seven deadly sins and decided what each of those would be like in a religon/kingdom. Just as reminder the seven 'deadly' sins and their balancing virtues are Lust - Chastity Gluttony -Temperance Greed - Charity Sloth - Dilligence Wrath - Kindness Envy - Patience Pride - Humility Developing these points Lust - This should be a very 'open' society where there is no 'moral code'. All types of behaviour are allowed and expected in a hedonist type of way. Gluttony - This should be a society that constantly wants to expand and consume. There should be very lavish entertainments to allow people to keep consuming everything around. Forests should be stripped of trees. Rivers should be diverted to the main capital. Ponds should be drained of fish and other wild life. Greed - This should be a merchant society. Sell anything and everything. Taxes on everything and licences to do everything from take out garbage to taking a bath. Everything has a price and the money always funnels up the taxation and licence stream to the top. Sloth - This is the opposite to the societ of greed. Here there is cost but while in the society of greed you get something for your money in the sloth, the money just flows away. Rivers are not dredged. Forests are not cleared. Roads are not cobbled. Everything takes more money and effort to get done because of the procrastination in the society. Licences are required but they are never issued making everything done a break in the law. People captured or trapped in the society are held indeffinitely awaiting trials by judeges that do not hold court or make judgements. Wrath - This is the society of berserkers. They will attack anyone at any time. They are never happy and always wanting to smash something. A very warrior dominated society with the biggest, strongest, and angriest dominating the heap. Envy - This is a society of artisans, spys, and thieves. Yet they are never happy with the work they have done. Everything looks beautiful and wonderful but it is never real very lasting. Find a statue and it is likely made out of paper machete and will fall apart in the next rain. A bridge is beautiful to look at but it is made of glass and will shatter under the first horse or hard boot. People will have radically different styles and at night there should be 'raiding parties' destroying each others stuff or stealing anything that can be confiscated. Think of a very Hollywood society. Pride - This is a society of braggers. Think of used car salespeople. They will tell you the world of the quality of the item or how well they are doing. The items though are often of second rate or worse quality that has been passed or sold through a dozen flea markets prior to ever being 'owned' by anyone. Okay, with that as a starting point, you can start to think of how these societies might have interacted over a period of time. |
| #4windspearMay 30, 2008 6:46:02 | That's, actually... A pretty good idea. I didn't think of that. Thanx! So do you think it can be a good idea to start with the big war between the races and subraces, and eventually they realise that they fight even amongst themselves, so they break up into these societies? It might be a good idea to do so. Thanks! What about the virtues? are there societies for the virtues as well, and the people representing each sin and virtue are leading the nation? How are they devided amongst themselves? Is it gonna be a kingdom, or a lot of city states? I would like to stress out the fact that this is my first attempt at a campaign world, so... Go easy on me. |
| #5master-of-puppetsMay 30, 2008 14:03:28 | the first idea for a new world is to know what do you want to play? basic XVI century with core races? cuzades and religious wars? nature vs civilization? gothic setting with vampires, big citys, demons and angels as protagonists? asian setting with monks, ninjas and samurai? chinese-empire setting with big castle-cities? war-of-kingdoms post roman empire/pre china empire? old world without technology? piratelike setting with island principates, blackpowder guns and ships? you first should choose what do you want to play, my sugestion: biblic ages with tribes as societies, the conflict between civilization vs nomadic tribes and with the gods in a very present stile with a egiptian/sumerian feeling for "evil" goods with sacrifice pyramids (yeah, mix everything) and roman/greek feeling for "good" gods could work as well so if you want to play that sin idea, maybe the "evil" gods gain power from sins and the "good" gain them from virtues so a starting would be: cronos, as in the greek mitology creates the "evil" gods first with his "emotions" and with animal features, then when he sees what do they do with the living races on earth he eats them, then makes the "good" gods to "fix" the world with the super-humanoid features, this new kids learn that Cronos their father has killd the previous set of gods and conspire to kill him, when they do it they release the older gods, after a short "disagreement" (aka war they cant fix alone for the world would not stand such forces) they start waging the followers to each other aligning themselves in tha 4 axes of chaos /order/good/evil and conspiring that has been true for the last 1000 years, now the things have changed... (thats your quote...) |
| #6mircolesMay 30, 2008 14:22:04 | You might want to check up on greek mythology to get some ideas. |
| #7strand0May 31, 2008 5:38:54 | What is the world. In the idea of writing made it's a flat-square. Looked at from high up it looks like a brawn map, even th smudged areas where countries boraders moved. The world should has NO geology. Some old trees exsist, but were made old. One enormous ring surrounded by new growth. :lightbulb Could be a quest in later years to find an FIRST Being. Long lived beings, like elves and dwarves, might have First beings amoung them. They have no bellybutton. Some cities will exist in places that seem crazy... but Cronos thought it looked cool. ... or it serves some unknown (to mortals) function. Watch out for when it isn't Cool or Functional. Boom! |
| #8windspearMay 31, 2008 8:42:33 | Actually, the world is shaped like a d8, a side for each of the inner planes (some overlap with the material plane, so it's overall 8). If you walk off the edge of one side, you "fall" into the next. Gravity works downwards from each side, so when you step off one side, there is a feeling like falling, but then you fall onto the ground of the plane you traveled to. The sins and virtues live in heaven and hell, and make deals with people who die and want to come back to life. That was the original idea, though I like the idea of making a kingdom for each sin and virtue. Master-of-Puppets, that's the idea of eras. It will start from a certain begining, and then move on to firearms, then to a different setting (probably d20 modern, or d20 matrix) and then fall back to regular D&D, through some involvment of the gods. The first era won't be played in, it's just the background. The 2nd era and on will be played, and therefore I need a certain timeline, to decide what happens when (I'm gonna keep track of time in this world) and how to divide it into eras. Cronos doesn't die, Master-of-Puppets, and he isn't the father of the gods. He has a big, BIG neverending book, and everything he writes in it happens, and everything that happens is written in it. He wrote the gods, so they exist. Now, I need to decide what happens in the 1st era. I like the idea of the sub-races goin into war between themselves, and then deividing into perspectives (which are the sins and virtues) and each claiming a land for themselves. The kingdoms now fight between themselves, and it continues forever. This happens in the mainland. I will make 2 other continents, one for oriental and one for al-quadim (which I need to translate into 3.5). They divide themsleves differently, but I have yet to decide how. What else should happen in the 1st era? |
| #9dustin_000Jun 01, 2008 0:00:41 | Hmmm... actually I do have an idea for your timeline: Year 0 to 200: Greed Cycle This period was filled with continuous wars over territory and resources. Year 200 to 250: Wrath Cycle Worn out from all the fighting, and no longer needing so much space, the few remaining city states fought random battles of assassination to settle old scores. Year 250 to 300: Lust Cycle Worn down to bare numbers, there wasn't much fighting during this time Year 300 to 450: Gluttony Cycle While things were recovering, there was plenty of resources for all Year 450 to 650: Sloth Cycle So much food.. so hard to move Year 650 to 750: Envy Seeing what their neighbors had, some came out and started fighting some more Year 750 to 900: Pride Cycle Seeing the jealousy of their neighbors, many became prideful Year 900 to 1000: Greed Cycle Greed returns... Something like that. |
| #10windspearJun 01, 2008 1:31:21 | Actually... That's a pretty good idea. And in 1000, Cronos gets bored and writes the gods. That's actually pretty nice. Thanx! |
