Im creating a homebrew class, a controller. said class is "at home surrounded by enemies"
and im having trouble coming up with a name for one of the class features.

"insert name here"

if there is at least two hostile targets adjacent to you, you gain a +1 bonus to hit with melee attacks, you also gain a further +1 for every extra hostile target adjacent to you.

this power is meant to reflect that the class is at home being outnumbered.

So, any ideas for a name for thsi feature. and while im at it, is it over or under powered as a class feature?

Use what is in () to rename.

Bravado's (a name representing overconfidence) Assurance (a word for that confidence)
Warfield (a term for the military field) Tactics

some time yet, not even finished the traits, and then i need to get some powers done!

im currently trying to come up with the class feature that you choose the effect that most suits your build. One gives a benefit if you wield a shield along with a flail. the other gives a bonus when wielding a 2h sword.

ps. Any thoughs on the specific class of 2h the bonus should apply to? now that you know the classes' name?

and while your at it, any idea for a name for this particular feature, i have a few ideas, but sometimes i get mindblock, such as today

ps. the third, and possibly fourth features aree staying hidden, i need something besides powers that is a surprise!

Polearms are great 2hw that don't get much loving, plus they usually have reach, which seems to be one of the few ways a martial controller might work. Having the class make opp. attacks with polearms within reach might be a nice setup. Something like 'Aggressor's Gamut'(means reach or range) might be good. Or possibly allowing them to use a polearm and an offhand weapon at the same time.

Since in core there is only 1 1h flail, the flail, you may want to extend that class feature to include hammers, picks or maces, just to give more variety. 'Colliding Strike', maybe? Cannot really come up w/much w/o what the mechanic is.

Historically, the gladiator (or at least specific ones) used reach weapons since they often fought with better armed/armored foes, animals, or against horseback/chariots. Thrown weapons, polearms, or debilitating weapons (nets/bolas) were just as important if not more so then hand-to-hand weapons such as short swords, daggers, or more esoteric weapons like the scissor or sica. This type of gladiator is the most iconic, though what 4th ed. would consider a fighter, ranger, or warlord would fit right in the gladiatorial field.

wow. i hadnt even given polearms much thought, which i spose backs up your point.

the Gladiator(for my HB version) has a choice between two builds, the Survivor Gladiator, Whom gets nifty stuff to help them survive. and the Dedicated Gladiator, whom is "dedicated" to battle, living only to see the next skirmish/war etc.

so, i thought, let me give them a feature to choose, that compliments their build.

such as choosing the Archer Fighting style to compliment the Archer Ranger Build.

1H+Shield for the Survivor, and the 2H one for the dedicated (striker secondary).

I hope this is the sort of mechanic you are talking about.

and i must thank you again, putting the polearm idea in my head, I dont see how theyre ignored, plenty of em: glaive, Halberd, Longspear, Greatspear.

And reach is a good thing for the less durable Melee classes.

It is not that I don't believe there aren't enough polearms, its that Heavy Blades, Light Blades, Hammers, Axes, etc., get many more options feat-wise. Pole arms have: Spear Push, and... that's it when it comes to feats that work off of something being a polearm. Plus focusing a controller/secondary striker with reach weapons might help you fill up that role better.

I'd really like to see a class that focuses on these weapons.

Warfield Tactics sounds more bad***, and controller is more about the field of battle, while Battlefield is a really overused word in 4th ed.:D

Ooh, i like the rename. nice. Heres the rundown of all my gladiators features

Gladiator’s Bravado

One thing a Gladiator is sure of, is that no matter how outnumbered they are, it can be used to their advantage. if there is at least two hostile targets adjacent to you, you gain a +1 bonus to hit with melee attacks, you also gain a further +1 for every extra hostile target adjacent to you.

Gladiators Nature
Choose the nature of the Gladiator that appeals to you, to gain it’s bonus

Dirty Nature
When a hostile target within melee range makes an attack, you may make an opportunity attack against them.

Honourable Nature
When you target an enemy that had attacked you in it’s last turn, you gain a bonus to hit rolls equal to 1D4.

Warfield Tactics

Choose the Fighting Tactic that appeals to you to gain it’s effect.

Tactics of the Survivor

If you wield a Flail, Axe, Pick or Light Blade along with a Light or Heavy Shield. You gain a +1 bonus to all defences.
In addition, when you become bloodied for the first time during an encounter, you gain temporary hit points equal to 1D8(Heroic) 1D10(Paragon) 1D12(Epic)

Tactics of the Dedicated

For as long as you wield a Polearm you gain a bonus to damage rolls equal to 1D4(Heroic)1D6(Paragon)1D8(Epic)

Dirty Nature is nice. Honorable Nature should probable be static, +2, +4 at 21st level.

DN seems like the only 'controller choice' or the bunch. HN is more along a striker/defender, TotS is definitely defender, TotD seems too striker.

Controller nature is more about conditional penalties, less damage. Defense deficiencies, movement penalties and forced movement, slow, immobilized, etc., are the purview of the controller. Having HN instead be something like:

Honorable Nature
Hostile enemies treat all area within your melee reach as difficult terrain.

Is more of a flip to DN, as well as more in like with a controller's battlefield control. It also is useful with both builds. Most controllers act as either shepherds or cops: herd multiple baddies into one area, or prevent baddies from attacking effectively. DN will do this; HN doesn't really accomplish either of these goals.

I did think the HN should be the same for her/para then upgrade at epic.

And youve cleared one of my many mistakes.
Im creating a controller without understanding what it is they actually do!

I like your remake of Honourable Nature.
Dirty Nature i love, because it reflects that exact nature, Striking an opponent whilst theyre occupied with an ally. how about adding a controller slant to it, by adding a "Slide/Push" effect to the attack?

Hmm. I might as well ask now. to save myself grief later on.

Im onto powers now(after these tweaks)
and i need to know how to "create" shall we say.
do ALL controller powers have to have some other effect than damage?

then the next step is what sort of effects should they have. and what do i not include.

Id appreciate that soo much.

the tactics remade with controller ideology

Tactics of the Survivor

If you wield a Flail, Axe, Pick or Light Blade along with a Light or Heavy Shield. You gain a +1 bonus to all defences, also when a hostile target attacks you, they receive a -2 to their next melee or ranged attack.

Tactics of the Dedicated

For as long as you wield a Polearm you gain a bonus to any powers that slide or push the target up to 1D4.

note that the survivalist(defender type stuff) is to make the Controller more durable, and to wreak more "warfield" havoc!

Push is one thing, slide is a whole 'nother idea. Push is just away from you, slide gives you complete control. As a class feature or at-will, go with push/pull. Slide is more built into encounter/daily powers.

TotS and TotD should probably have a stat built into them. TotS could have the penalty be equal to Int mod, TotD could have a push equal to Wis. Otherwise, you have no secondary stats accounted for yet.

Controller powers can be pure damage, but that is more like striker territory. No well-made controller goes for damage; they want as many status effects as possible to use.

That's very similar to the Paladin's 'Valiant Strike,' isn't it?  In general, giving the effect of an at will to all your powers may be a bit much for a power.  A damage bonus might be better, that'd be in line with the Invoker's covenant of wrath (IIRC).  Most class features that give an attack bonus, so giving a flat +1 to hit when targeting more than one enemy might also work.

Possible names:

Fighting in the Round

Wheat before the Scythe
