I've got my friends hooked on to D&D, and one of them noticed the hexagonal board I have. What would you recommend for using one?

Switch to squares or get used to some tricky distance/area problems.

Seriously though, I have a lot of wargames that use the hex grid, such as Squad Leader, Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader, etc. The movement thing isn't that difficult. The problem you're going to have is that your monsters can't surround someone by 8 anymore. They can only do 6. They will, however, have an easier time flanking an opponent, which could make or break a PC. As for Line of Sight, the hex games I have all use the system of drawing a straight line from the middle of the origin hex to the middle of the target hex. If the line is uninterrupted AND doesn't nick the corner of anything, then you have LoS.

Also, your Bursts and Blasts will affect fewer squares. Unless you rule that your Blasts have six sides. Then they will have more squares.

With Squares:
Burst 1 = 9 Squares
Burst 2 = 25
Burst 3 = 49

With Hexes:
Burst 1 = 7
Burst 2 = 19
Burst 3 = 37

So, you would have to add squares to make it up, or say Blasts have six sides and hope that makes up for it.

Squares:
Blast 1: 1
Blast 2: 4
Blast 3: 9
Blast 4: 16

Hexes:
Blast 1: 1
Blast 2: 7
Blast 3: 19
Blast 4: 37

Or, alternately, you could rule that Blasts work the same in number of squares, but then they would have to be wavy.

If you have it or know someone who has it, 3rd Edition's Unearthed Arcana has a lot of good advice for playing D&D on a Hex grid.

Actually, the Unnoficial SRD is a link, so I've read that. I've got a square board, so if there are too many problems we can switch back. Blasts will probably be the biggest problem. I think I'll just keep it in whatever form, but making it wavy. As far as I know, all the blasts are 3x3, so I'll just have it somewhat "Wrap" around the person.

I've used hex grid since ~'77. Never had any problems.

Not as much as I'd suggest using a tape measure. Just convert "Squares" or "Five feet" into inches.

And no, you cannot keep your square circles.
