Im making a Cleric/Shaman and I was wondering if combining the Totem and Holy symbol into one item was overly broken. My plan is detailed below.

First I would carve my Totem in wood, which I would then cast the Ironwood ritual from the PH2. The now “Steal” wooden Totem would get enchanted and be used as the shaft of a Mace which I would then enchant into a Crusader’s Weapon.

I know by the strict reading of the rules as soon as I enchant the mace I loose the enchantment on the Totem. Im wanting to keep both, my question is, is it to broken to be house ruled in, would you allow it? If they made a magic weapon that could act as a Totem Id not need this, but alas they do not. So what do you think?

For those who are interested I’ve put a little back story for the character in the ‘sblock’ below.

Back story
As the sun arose over the snow capped mountains, the first rays of the suns light sparkled across the crystal clear mountain lake. Enoch looked upon the beauty of the new day and thank the gods he was yet again alive. As he basked in the morning sun, a rustle of leaves caught his attention seconds before a dire bear burst into the opening.

Enoch, unequipped and unready for a fight, turned to run only to see another bear emerge from the woods on the other side. Both bears reared back on their hind legs and roared. Enoch’s bones shook though he could not move, trapped between the two bears he prayed. With his eyes closed he heard scuffling as the bears fought, then all was silent. When he opened his eyes a beautiful Eladrin stood before him. “Greetings stranger, my name is Ninlil.” She was a druid and had dedicated herself to protecting the mountain top glade he awoke in. Enoch was so smitten by Ninlil he choose to stay in the glade and help her be a Warden of the glade.

For 60 years they watched over the mountain top haven, until late one dark night a crack of thunder heralded the coming of a storm. Enoch and Ninlil left their home to scout the glade and came face to face with a menacing tiger-like man. The newcomer parted his lips in a pointy tooth grin, “So, Enoch you found your own slice of heaven... will I’ve come to eat your heart.” Ninlil was already a bear bounding toward the tiger-man, Enoch was not as quick stunned by this creatures apparent hate for him.

Ninlil was intercepted by yet another tiger-man leaping form the jungle. In all Enoch and Ninlil fought 4 tiger-men, and death was the only way anyone would make it out of the glade. unfortunately for the tiger-men, Enoch and Ninlil had the primordial powers of the glade behind them and they prevailed, but at a cost. Enoch was mortally wounded, as he lay dying Ninlil held him close. “I will wait for you, here in our glade.” She whispered. Sadness filled Enoch’s eyes, “You know I will not remember you, our life together is coming to an end...” Ninlil looked him in his eye, looked into his soul, “Our love is to strong to end in death. I will see you in another life, lover.” With that Enoch died.

For the next forty years Ninlil was alone in her glade, nature her only companion. One afternoon she had a strange feeling of warmth, as she turned standing before her was an armored Paladin. Resonating from within the metal skin a familiar voice spoke, “I am looking for...” Ninlil interrupted, “Enoch! Is that you!” The paladin removed his helm though a scare marred his face it was her love, it was Enoch. “You are the face in my dreams, I’ve Searched for you for a life time.” She smiled up at him, “Our love will live though any death. We must merely wait for time to bring us together.”

They lived peacefully for many years, but as all things natural time began to take its toll on Ninlil. She had seen many winters before she met Enoch, and many more since. As her life faded she made Enoch promise he would leave the glade and live the lives he is meant to live. He refused, wanting to stay near her stay in the glade where he knew she would stay after death. “No,” she told, “Where you are I will be with you, though our love I will find you.”

Enoch left the glade that winter, alone. He returned to the order of paladins that he had left all those years ago. All of his friends had retired or died, he was alone. He volunteered for every mission he could, a willingness to server that ended in his death in a Rakshasa cable, to one that called him by name as the fought promising to eat his heat. As the Rakshasa reveled over the dying body of Enoch, Enoch spoke “You wish to eat my heart, you will find it absent...it belongs to someone else,” and died.

As the sun arose over the snow capped mountains, the first rays of the suns light sparkled across the crystal clear mountain lake. Enoch looked upon the beauty of the new day and thank the gods he was yet again alive. As he stood, a warmth filled him, “Ninlil?” A ghostly image a bear appeared before him. She was right, not even death would keep them apart.
The adventure begins...

I wouldn't allow it. No cheating the number of hands you need. Unless you're using a shield, you lose nothing with mace in one hand, totem in the other anyway.

Maybe Adventurer's Vault 2 will have a holy Symbol that can be used as implement for Primal powers, like the Star of Correllon does for Arcane powers. Maybe one for Melora?

I wouldn't see a problem with reflavoring, as long as mechanically, it's the same as holding two items. The carved totem makes a slightly longer handle for the mace, making it needed to be wielded two-handed, but without the bonus to damage you'd get from wielding it in two hands. Get the weapon and totem enchanted separately, as usual.

I'd even go so far as to say you could take one hand off and wield it one-handed as a free action (as dropping something is a free action) and choosing which "end" you're letting go of, so you could pick something else up, but of course losing the bonuses on the "end" you "dropped" until you spent a minor action to adjust your grip and "pick it up" again. Mechanically the same as holding two things and dropping one.
