| #1tennyjadenJul 11, 2011 14:52:45 | So, my players have one interesting habbit: digging into crap. How do I mean this? Well, they ignore the fact, that large creatures, such as dragons, may have taken a dump somewhere in their lair, and just run and search through these places. So I thought: Thet can't be healthy and came up with a disease which may be found in dragoncrap, in the sewers or at other places, where excrements lay around for longer times. It is supposed to be a kind of disease, that attacks the persons nervous system, with first making it harder to move, reducing all 5 senses, then going into an absolute paralyzation and state of being locked in and then death through respiral and cardiac arrest. Sewage Nevepoison Level 6 Disease Worsen DC: 15 or less; Stabilize DC: 16; Improve DC: 21; Innitial Stage: No Effect (We don't want the players to know immediately, what they caught, do we?) Stage 1: The target takes a -1 penalty to speed. Stage 2: The target is slowed and takes a -2 penalty to Reflex and Armor Class and a -2 penalty to all dexterity based and strength based checks. Stage 3: Any creature further away from the target has concealment and the target takes a -2 penalty to perception checks. Stage 4: The target is restrained, blinded and deafened. Stage 5: The target dies. What do you think about this? Is it balanced? What would you change? Greetings, TennyJaden |

That would be the mature way to handle it, with the immature way being "HAHA! Now you all have a deadly disease you didn't know about because you did something I didn't like an adventure ago!" If you DON'T have a problem with them searching, and this is for some percived sense of "realism", just don't do it. Just like I assume you don't force your players to say that their character goes to the bathroom every once in a while (although since you are currently suggesting a random punishment disease, I can't be so sure you don't tell your players "HAHA! You didn't crap before so now you have crapped in your armour and take -5 on all rolls!"), it's best to waive dragoncrap. There is seriously no point in bringing this up, except for maybe a bit of comedy, but even then adding a PENALTY to it is nonsense. Besides, wouldn't dragons, incredibly intelligent beings in D&D, have a designated area away from any important area of their lair to go to the bathroom? As for the sewers part, it depends. Oddly roomy sewers are a fantasy staple, so players probably shouldn't be punished for going in one, especially if it is a part of the adventure rather than an idea they had. Fantasy sewers usually have walkways, so the characters may not even be in contact with filth. Even if they fall in the waste, they shouldn't be punished with a DISEASE. An attack roll penalty while in the filth and jokes afterwards of how bad the character smells? Sure. But a disease from temporary contact? Not fun. Especially since we are apparently talking about a NEUROTOXIN that puts you into CARDIAC ARREST. From poop. I don't think that's how it works. |

If you realy don't want them to dive into that much filled water without thinking twice; through a nice slime or two into it so they get a fun encounter out of it but they will think next time "do we realy want to dive into that watter remember those slimes the last time, oh and remember that water troll in that other cave that thing was mean to" plenty of ways to deter a player from needlessly doing stuff without giving them a desease they are likaly not even going to know how or why they contracted unless you tell them and then they will be like WTF. I personaly love combat encounters as a sway to make a player think twice though sometimes I toss a trap in here or there if it makes sence thats definalty the key it must make sence to the dm and the player for the resoult to happen relisticaly. Side note I am against deadly deseases they just arn't a lot of fun for the player and when half the party dies becouse they can't roll worth a damm it sucks. |
| #6tennyjadenJul 18, 2011 21:25:52 | Well, I only wanted to know, if the disease is mechanically balanced. My campaign is designed to be deadly, gritty, realistic and contains a lot of things the players just don't see coming and we all agreed on that. In my game players can just die, because they had bad luck. I didn't want you to rate the way I use it, just how the disease itself is MECHANICALLY. Fine, I could say the disease is not delivered by searching through crap, but only through monster and trap attacks, like many other diseases. How would you rate it then? @stargazer_dragon: If you don't want characters to die, because their player can't roll good, you probably also have taken out the beholder's ray of death? Nothing wrong with that, but my game is a little more evil than that. |
| #7stargazer_dragonJul 18, 2011 22:08:42 | didn't remove it though I yet to use it simply becouse I play my beholders like I do my dragons as to say extreamly mean and intelligent. I am not nessisarily against players death specialy since it is prety easy to bring players back in 4.0 just avoid needless death. also wasn't tring to judge just was tring to offer alternitives to the end in case you found them usefull. Balence wise it should be fine most often they will resist / cure it before it becomes a issue anyhows unless they are realy low lvl |
