If you drop an enemy to below zero hp with that encounter power, the encounter power is not expended for that encounter. Special: You cannot take this feat more than once, you can retrain this feat for a different encounter power. Let me know what you think. |
| #2kainhighwindMar 25, 2009 4:18:26 | Sounds pretty cool to me. Screams out Kamehameha and Big Bang Attack to me. then again, I just got DBZ season 6 on dvd.... still a cool feat and I can't see it being really over powered. |
| #3frostythepyroMar 25, 2009 7:26:32 | What tier is this (heroic paragon epic?) ARe there any restrictions on the power (for example only being able to chose power of your level-4 or less) Can you pick an encounter utility (some of them do damage) Are there any provision for powers that hit multiple enemies (so if you hit the Big Bad and a minion, kill the minion you can use it on the big bad and a diferent minion next time) What if something creats a lasting effect or save ends type of effect (for example takes 5 ongoing) that kills the target and the the initial attack itself. |
| #4luzekeMar 25, 2009 7:48:57 | To me it sounds decent. I would though limit the number of times you can save your encounter power, since it could be overpowered in a way. If a player only uses the encounter power when he's sure that it will kill the enemy, then he would potentially have infinite encounter powers. Epic Tier has dibs on that. I would change it to something like: When you take this feat, choose an encounter power. Once per encounter when you drop an enemy to 0 hp or lower with you chosen power, you regain the use of that power. Paragon Tier: Increase to twice per encounter. Epic Tier: Increase to thrice per encounter. |
| #5evilkobraMar 25, 2009 7:53:21 | Love it - with the caveat that it shouldn't work on minions. Partly because it'd somewhat lose its flavour if you used it over and over again on them, but mostly because any effects the power might have besides killing the target (i.e. damaging, moving, inflicting status effects or otherwise affecting another enemy, as well as healing or otherwise aiding allies) would be gained far too easily. So I'd be tempted to just add the word "non-minion" to the power. But since that's really inelegant (and the only precedent is the Tattoos in the AV2 preview as far as I can tell), I'd add "bloodied" instead. It kills a few birds with one stone, since on one hand it stops it from working on minions (who are never bloodied), but also from one-shotting low-level enemies, and from working on traps or other objects. It also fits the flavour. |
| #6dogbackwardMar 25, 2009 8:38:04 | And maybe you should change it to read "...single-target, encounter attack power..." For one, it fits better, since you don't see many area or multi-target "finishing moves". And it also avoids using large-area effects for an increased chance of killing at least one of the targets, making it (somewhat) easier to keep your Encounter power. |
| #7evilkobraMar 25, 2009 9:01:58 | Maybe it's simply easier to say "...if all the target creatures are reduced to 0hp..."? Then you don't have to create an artificial distinction between powers. |
| #8dogbackwardMar 25, 2009 10:39:48 | Well, for one, that would make it very hard to ever get any use out of it, unless you specifically angle your area to only have the lowest HP target in the effect. Second, I just think that a single-target ability fits the theme of a "Finishing Move' much better than area or multi-target effects. Finishers are usually found in duels and one-on-one fights and the like. That's just a personal preference on my part, though. |
| #9bastard_dmMar 25, 2009 10:55:05 | Honestly, I think this feat would be far more balanced if you only recovered the encounter power 1/day rather than 1/encounter. That's assuming you want it at the Heroic tier, anyways. There aren't a lot of options for Heroic-tier characters to re-use their encounter powers, and if this feat could be used multiple times per day (or even multiple times per encounter), it would be imbalanced towards striker classes, and make encounter powers that deal more damage substantially more attractive options. If limited to once per day, then it would be fair to assume that in a traditional adventuring day, any character (regardless of class) should be able to drop a monster to zero hit points with their chosen encounter power- provided they were trying to be smart about it. |
| #10evilkobraMar 25, 2009 11:03:02 | EDIT: (to DogBackward) Oh I agree with you on the most part. The point was, on one hand, not to force the player to pick a single-target power (if he really thinks he can finish off multiple opponents in one go, then by all means he should), and on the other to avoid creating a new distinction between powers (there's no such thing as "single-target" and "multi-target" powers in the rules, and it can cause confusion with many powers, in particular multi-attack powers that can be used on a single target such as Thundertusk Boar Strike, Eldritch Rain, Icy Rays...). |
| #11dogbackwardMar 25, 2009 12:32:28 | I seem to recall something mentioning single-target powers before, but I'll have to wait until I get back to my books. Anyway, I'm starting to agree that letting it be multi-use per day and/or encounter might be too much anyway. It's a cool idea, but I think it probably still needs a bit of work before it can really be used in play. |
| #12therubberduckMar 25, 2009 12:45:20 | I'm thinking it might be too powerful, even if it was once per day. At least for the heroic tier. It kinda sounds like an ability you might gain from a paragon path. Then again, I always prefer to make homebrew underpowered, rather than risk it being overpowered, so I might just be too cautious. It might make a cool epic level feat. After all, kamehameha and its likes are really for epic heroes. Five minutes thought later, I've considered if this might be a better fit. Signature Finishing Move Epic tier feat Benefit: When you take this feat, choose an encounter power of level 17 or lower from your class' list of powers. You gain access to this power with the following changes. You can use the power as an at-will power. If you hit a target with the power, roll damage for the power as normally and compare it to the remaining hit points of the target. If you drop the target to below zero hp with the power, the power works as normally. If the power does not drop the target to below zero hp, then the power has no effect. |
