I have an idea for a high-random-effect magic weapon that I'd like to use some day. The mechanics of it are tied into the character's personality, so I'll post a bit of that too.

Character Bio

This concept is still under construction, but the placeholder name is Flee.

Flee is a goblin spellcaster (probably a sorcerer), who got kicked out of his tribe for experimenting with magic the other shamans couldn't understand. Flee didn't know how he gained these powers: he just naturally has them.

Not being a particularly brave goblin, Flee can often be found hiding under or behind things, and is prone to running from battle. This behavior compounded his odd behavior, until he was ostracized entirely.

After being chased out of the tribe, he attempted to come back but was attacked on site. The crossbow bolt fired at him was miraculously stopped by a trinket he'd found, and has since become Flee's lucky trinket. He takes it with him everywhere, caressing it when he's scared. The trinket is probably an old coin or rusty item he found somewhere.

Little does Flee know, he's actually imbuing his lucky charm with magic when he rubs it. Little by little, the trinket is acquiring some magical properties, almost entirely revolving around luck.

Seems reasonable as long as you and your party are willing to put up with rolling an extra die and doing some extra calculation on every attack. Most people on the boards appear to be trying to make combat run faster, though.

Seriously? All day with only one reply?

What if I mentioned I could make a program on my calculator that did all the math for me? Then I'd just have to add any conditional modifiers. About 3 seconds of math tops. :P

So I guess I'll this one last time, under the theory that weekend forum-goers may have something to say. :/

Sounds reasonable to me, I assume you want it for your entire career, and that means you're missing out on other implements.

Option D is probably the one I'd use, especially if you can autocalc it on a calculator. That way you don't get super-nerfed when you have a bad roll. It will also make up a little for your lack of other properties, by rolling higher numbers more consistently.

I do agree this could take a toll with rolling. However it is a decently fun idea. Perhaps if you make it "the first swing" or "the first hit" in combat or maybe even just add it to critical hits only you may still be able to add it without an over-abundance of rolling.

If you would rather not have the players realize they are doing more, you can try to do things like for example just secretly add half of the players dice roll to damage +1 per 2 levels. That way there is no extra rolling needed, the ammount is determined by a dice roll, and you can add it without the players having any idea.
