| #1heathan_v20Jul 13, 2009 14:05:20 | This thread is my attempt at creating new aspects of the Wizard, expanding on what I’ve seen in Dragon Magazine, Arcane Power, and even Quintessential Wizard. I will focus on some new builds, new powers, and feats, maybe paragon and epic destinies. As for the new builds I will do my versions of the necromancer, abjurationist, etc. Well I hope to get feed back and I will reserve the next 5 or 6 spots to allow myself room to do this. I would really like feed back and ideas on this as well. So here goes. Tome of Profane Utterance You speak the words of power and they sends waves of fear and psychic tormoil into your foes. Once per encounter you may activate this power. The next Arcane power you use has the keywords Psychic and Fear added to it. If you hit the target/targets with the attack you are considered to have Combat Advantage against them until the end of the encounter when using powers that have the Psyhic, Fear, or Necrotic keywords. Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes You may call upon the convergence of time and space to readjust itself allowing you to redifine your actions. As an encounter power when missing with an attack power, as a free action, you may negate the power all together and use an At-will Arcane Power instead. Wand of Extended Extent You focus your mind and like a wild barbarian you unleashes a wild barrage of spells pounding out your foes. Once per encounter you may target multiple enemies with a single target Arcane attack, to a maximum of your dexterity modifier. You take a -2 penalty to the attack rolls, all targets must be within range, and no target maybe attacked more then once. Staff of Unapproachable Supremacy So skilled are you with the arcane that you can bend reality to your will, especially in times of dire need. As an encounter power, when you are hit by a melee attack, you may use an Immediate Interrupt to activate an Arcane At-Will power. If the attack hits then you may Teleport the primary target a number of squares equal to your Wisdom modifier, or within the area of effect of the power you used. The power used requires an attack roll to work. |

| #6knishiuchiJul 14, 2009 23:17:39 | Tome of Profane Utterance Once per encounter you may call out the ancient and dark words of power to help in your assault on your foes. The next daily power you use has the keyword Psychic added to it, and if you hit with the attack the target or targets are Weakened until the end of your next turn. I see absolutely no point in requiring the power to be daily. At most, this will reduce the damage you're going to receive for one turn. Way below par. Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes As a daily when missing with an attack, you may call upon the convergence of time and space to readjust itself and allow the attack to hit. However damage is always half, but all other effects work as if the attack was a hit. Once per day goes against the design of class features in general and wizards in particular. Definitely wouldn't work as an encounter ability, since so many wizard powers rely on effects, not damage. Wand of Extended Extent Once per encounter power you may add your Dexterity modifier to the range of the next power you use. The attack however takes a -2 penalty to attack rolls. Yeah, that's just terrible. Range is hardly ever a issue and a penalty is just icing. Staff of Unapproachable Supremacy As a daily, when you are hit by a melee attack, you may use an Immediate Interrupt to use an at-will power. If the attack hits then the target, or targets, are Pushed a number of squares equal to your Wisdom modifier. Again, dailies aren't good for class features, and again it wouldn't work as an encounter ability. |
| #7heathan_v20Jul 17, 2009 12:34:22 | ok well what can be done to improve upon them...I mean just sayin' oh that's weak...doesn't help that much. I'll go back and make some changes and I'll see what I can do. But I do want these to be balanced, I'd rather shoot for under par and build up then shoot way over and cut back. Better to build hopes up then cut them down imo. |
| #8knishiuchiJul 17, 2009 12:56:45 | Okay then. How about this. Tome of Profane Utterance Once per encounter you may call out the ancient and dark words of power to help in your assault on your foes. The next arcane attack you use has the fear keyword added to it and targets the Will defense regardless of its original target defense. If this attack hits, the target is weakened until the end of your next turn. Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes Once per encounter when you miss with an attack, you may call upon the convergence of time and space to readjust itself and allow the attack to hit. Roll damage as normal, but apply no secondary effects the power might have. Wand of Extended Extent Once per encounter you may target multiple enemies with a single target arcane attack, to a maximum of your dexterity modifier. You take a -1 penalty to the attack roll for each additional target. Staff of Unapproachable Supremacy Once per encounter when hit by an adjacent enemy, you may use an At-Will power as an immediate interrupt. If this attack hits, you gain damage resistance equal to your constitution modifier until the start of your next turn. |
| #9heathan_v20Jul 17, 2009 16:11:32 | Ok some of those I like, I still think they are a bit off but that's the point of this is to balance it. I like and I don't like, I think changing it to a Will attack is overall bad mojo, when on average Ref is the best choice to attack statistically speaking. Now makng a secondary attack vs Will then makes it more complicated. However I'm not even sure about the Weakened state. This was to used for building Necromancer build. Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes Once per encounter when you miss with an attack, you may call upon the convergence of time and space to readjust itself and allow the attack to hit. Roll damage as normal, but apply no secondary effects the power might have. I don't like this one at all, the reason being wizards are not strikers, so damage is of minimal importance, when compaired to Forced Movement and Status effects. I was going to use this for a build with Transmuter and Chronomancer builds. Wand of Extended Extent Once per encounter you may target multiple enemies with a single target arcane attack, to a maximum of your dexterity modifier. You take a -1 penalty to the attack roll for each additional target. Flawless man, I was thinking of making the power an AoE, but this I have to say hit the nail on the head. Just another war wizard type build. However I think a general -2 penalty to attack rolls would be just fine. Staff of Unapproachable Supremacy Once per encounter when hit by an adjacent enemy, you may use an At-Will power as an immediate interrupt. If this attack hits, you gain damage resistance equal to your constitution modifier until the start of your next turn. I don't know I'm indifferent I think its balanced but doesn't seem to fit the function of the build I was gonna use it for. It seems to me to be to similar to Staff of Defense for what I wanted to do. This build was going to be for a few different types, but Abjurationist/Controller came to mind first, and now Transmuter when I think about it. |
| #10heathan_v20Jul 17, 2009 22:07:02 | Ok here's what I came up with. Tome of Profane Utterance Once per encounter you may call out the ancient and dark words of power to help in your assault on your foes. The next Arcane power you use has the keywords Psychic and Fear added to it. If you hit the target/targets with the attack you are considered to have combat advantage against them until the end of the encounter when using powers that have the Psyhic, Fear, or Necrotic keywords. I think this is good, it gives you a big bonus, possibly against multiple targets for an encounter. However it limits your power choices to gain the benefits of it, so you won't be able to just drop nukes on people and get a +2 to hit them constantly. I may even remove Psychic and Fear from the list and say only Necrotic, however I want this to be a viable option for Illusionist as well as Necromancer builds. Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes As an encounter when missing with an attack, as a free action, you may reroll the attack. Regardless of the outcome of the roll, other then damage all other effects of the power count as a hit. I like this because it is good for Controller wizards, as well as the upcoming Transmuter and Chronomancer build, which will focus on status effects rather then damage. Wand of Extended Extent Once per encounter you may target multiple enemies with a single target Arcane attack, to a maximum of your dexterity modifier. You take a -2 penalty to the attack rolls, all targets must be within range, and no target maybe attacked more then once. Like I said you hit this one dead on, I like it, just adjusted the penalty and added some stipulations. Staff of Unapproachable Supremacy As an encounter, when you are hit by a melee attack, you may use an Immediate Interrupt to use an at-will power. If the attack hits you may teleport a number of squares equal to your Wisdom modifier, if you are out of range of the attack then it counts as a miss. I'm not sure I like this one, its not quite what I was looking for and seems to be much more distant from what I was thinking. I still think the push works best, even the damage reduction works better. |
| #11knishiuchiJul 17, 2009 22:17:10 | The tome is fine. Orb is overpowered when you use something that is purely for the effect, like Sleep. Wand is good. Staff I would add a caveat that it must be an arcane At-Will power and it can't be ranged. |
| #12HebitsuikazaJul 17, 2009 22:28:27 | Is the Tome of Profane Utterance filled with 4 letter words and used heavily be Bards who utilize a poetry-style performance with a heavy beat behind it? |
| #13heathan_v20Jul 18, 2009 17:44:45 | Hebitsuikaza that's pretty good lol. I'm not sure how to handle the orb then, maybe litterally just a reroll on the attack or auto-hit for 1/2 damage on a miss, with no effects? You are right it does make it pretty powerful though... but atleast you see the point of it, is more for super controller builds. Its not about damage but effect. |
| #14knishiuchiJul 19, 2009 5:52:51 | Hebitsuikaza that's pretty good lol. Yeah, I don't think any heavy controller wizard is going to want anything but an orb of imposition, and if you make it competitive with that, you've made something competitive with orb of imposition, ergo broken as hell. How about using the orb to negate your own attack once per encounter when you miss. No half damage, no effects, but you keep your daily/encounter power. |
| #15heathan_v20Jul 19, 2009 10:11:42 | that's actually a good idea and a very good possibility. Now to me, doin' that can be really broken, unless you lay down some ground rules. Here are some ideas:
Another idea I just came up with is you can change an AoE power into a Wall or Zone that last until the end/start of your next turn. Something like that would be very controlerish...Wall of Thunderwave...however that to could be OP. |
| #16heathan_v20Jul 23, 2009 8:09:58 | anyone got any other ideas??? |
| #17heathan_v20Jul 25, 2009 19:35:55 | ok I've edited the original powers and next I will start on the new builds I plan on using. These are: Necromancer, "Spirit Lord" (Tome of Profane Utterance) This build like all Wizards will focus on being a Controller, with a secondary function as a striker or leader depending on spell choices. I'm thinking that there will be two types of builds for this, Charisma based and/or Wisdom will be the secondary ability score. They will mainly focus on single targets. Necromancer, "Lord of the Undead" (Tome of Conjuration or w/e) Controller will be this builds focus, but it will offer a new element a secondary function as Defender. This will be a mix of the conjuration build and the Beast Master ranger build. Their powers and feats will focus on making their undead minion a wrecking ball, they will favor Constitution as a secondary ability score. Chronomancer (Orb of Indeterminate Absolutes) Controller extrodinaire, that is the art of Chronomancy. The way they effect the fight though is through status effects, their ability to dish out damage is very weak, but their ability to effect a target for numerous rounds if high. This will make their secondary score most likely Wisdom. well that's all for now, I'll see what else I can come up with. |
