| #1MatyrJun 25, 2010 12:02:16 | I have a lot of things for a homebrewed campaign I am running right now that I would appreciate critiques on, but I don't know if this is the right place for it. I assume it is, but just wanted to make sure before I started posting a bunch of stuff. I have the following to discuss: 9 homebrew races 23 homebrew monsters myriad of house-rules an ever increasing number of magical items. |

Waren Racial Traits Average Height: 5’8”-6’4” Average Weight: 155-240 Ability Scores: +2 Strength +2 Charisma Preferred Classes: Warlord Paladin Warlock Sorcerer Size: Medium Speed: 6 Vision: Normal Languages: Common, Human Skill Bonuses: +2 Diplomacy +2 Intimidate Claw Mastery: Warens have proficiencies in Ceremonial Claws. This claw is a superior one handed melee weapon in the light blade group that deals 1d8 damage, has a +3 proficient bonus and Brutal 1. Natural Tactician: When initiative is first rolled a Waren may subtract 2 from his total initiative score to grant a +4 bonus to any other player’s roll. Force of Personality: +2 to Will defense. Description: Nearly human. They often have small disfigurements in the face or body with exaggerated foreheads and jaw lines as well as larger than average teeth. Often Warens are considered to be humans. When the human race was enslaved by the race that brought them to the Garden they were subjected to many tests and ‘improvements’. One such test led to the creation of the human-only ambient class, another lead to the creation of the Waren. Every one in 250 human births will be a Waren, every one in 100 Waren births will be human. Warens tend to be more aggressive, militaristic and disciplined than their human counterparts. Depending on different societies they are treated quite differently. Some human societies openly include their Waren members and they often rise to positions of power in the government or military. Warens also make their own societies that can be as varied as human settlements, but lean towards more militaristic ways. The most well known sub-sect of Warens is “The Claw” a Spartan-like order with strict guidelines for membership and conduct. Members of The Claw can also be distinguished by their lopsided musculature. The Ceremonial claw worn by all claw members in conjunction with endless hours of training have made the side that they wear their claw on significantly more muscled than their other side. Their arms are the most exaggerated part with claw arms often being twice the girth of non-claw arms. They are the Waren race’s response to human societies who shun their kind. They are brutally defiant in the face of all oppression; glorify warfare and challenges of strength, intelligence and tactics. Waren characters tend to be tacticians and planners often thinking of elaborate strategies and instructions for the simplest tasks. No Waren would go into a battle unprepared unless he thinks it is only going to add to the challenge and nothing, other than his own life, is on the line. Common Characteristics: Ambitious, bold, creative, hardy, loyal, organized, proud, resourceful, stubborn, tenacious, vengeful |

This claw is a superior one handed melee weapon in the light blade group that deals 1d8 damage, has a +3 proficient bonus and Brutal 1. Right off the bad, this is problematic. The entire race gets free proficiency in a badass superior weapon? No, the weapon has to be martial, or they need a Dwarven-Weapon-Training-style feat. Secondly, no race gets +2 to a defense. +1 is the limit, and it only ever applies when a race has two stats tied to the same defense. Drop the defense bonus entirely. It also needs an actual power. The tactician thing doesn't really cut it. |

Well if I completely drop both then the Waren really doesn't have any abilities... (In mid post I think you edited in the tactician thing, or I didn't see it, but yes that is my point). After reading the description do you have any suggestions? |

Since they revel in armed conflict, perhaps you could grant them some sort "glorious battlecry" encounter power. Maybe call it Roar of Glory, that is a free action that grants them a benefit when they slay an enemy. I would also change their favored classes; unless its a flavor thing, seems to me they would also be really REALLY good rogues. |

I like making Natural Tactician as a racial feat, but I'm not completely sold on the Force of Personality being a racial feat. The Diplomacy to Athletics thing just won't happen though. While members of "The Claw" are often not as diplomatic the majority of the race are not members and they are normally skilled diplomats. I would even venture to say that Diplomacy is more their thing than Intimidation. At least as I have them thought about in my head. I thought about maybe giving them an encounter power that was based on the whole "Tactician" thing. Maybe something about when they get combat advantage they can also grant someone else combat advantage against the same target or something? Maybe something with flanking? What do you think? |
