I have a friend that knows very little about dnd, its mechanics, culture, traditions, storytelling devices or ANYTHING about being a DM, and he wants to make a homebrewed class.

I love homebrewing, so I ofcourse offered my help. I'm in a little bit of a pinch, since while I'm trying to talk features, at-wills and mechanics, he talks in fluff and fluff only. Fluff is good, but he gives me no yes or nos when it comes to features. So I basically have the challenge of making a class out of this guy's mind.... Challenge accepted!

This character is made for a campaign we are doing, he is basically "The Joker Behind the Scenes", plotting the whole thing while preteding to be our friend. Please note, this thread is not about that and I'd like you to ignore the subject completely. If you want to talk to me about player spotlight and "PCs as Monster", make another thread. In here, we are homebrewing.

This class will NOT look "official" and will never by "traditional 4e", all it has to do is be vaguely balanced and match the flavour of the persona.

The Class!
This character is an odd mixture of Gambit, Two-Face and our made-up goodness.
He uses cards, which he can imbue with spells. This means that all his spells are consumables (read: dailies), and he can imbue them with other stuff like low-level rituals and "story-driven magic".
He is evil (behind the scenes, not in the PCs face), and each extended rest he has to make a dark ritual to recharge his cards. He can recharge them with his "class powers", available rituals or even spells from his victims.
The cards is his class. They are created by dark magic, and he probably gained them through a "deal with the devil", and recharges them via sacrifice.

Let's, for the sake of the Brainstorm (i.e. "Stage 1"), that he has as many cards in his "Deck of Many Things" to a number equa to 6*the number of encounter powers he has + the amount of daily powers he has. He has the old Wizard's "prepare" spell kind og thing, meaning he can only prepare x many level 7 encounter powers and y many level 3 encounter powers.

I'm thinking each encounter power from his class can be prepared 6 times, and you can replace a higher level encounter power with a lower level encounter power (instead og preparing 6 and 6 encounter power, you can prepare 0 12).

The Persona's powers are chaotic, and he his is the ying to the adventurer's yang. He is the Joker to our Batman. He goes around, drawing a card at scenarios and exclaiming that "Fate has already chosen the card", and that is very Two-Face. He does not belive he is evil, he belive everything he does is chosen by fate. If he stands before two guys, and says "one of you can live, and the card gets to choose" he does not believe he is killing one of the guys, but that fate has chosen one of them to live.

  • Level 1

    • 2 At-Wil powers

      • At least 1 of them is non-card based.

    • His "Deck" consists of  9 cards, in addition to any story-driven cards granted by the DM (me)

      • 6 Level 1 Encounter Attack Cards

      • 1 Level 1 Daily Attack Cards

      • 2 Ritual Cards

  • Level 2

    • Utility Power

  • Level 3

    • Number of cards increases by 6, 15 in total + story cards.

      • 6 Level 3 Encounter Attack Powers

  • Level 4

  • Level 5

    • Number of cards increases by 1

      • 1 Daily Attack Card

  • Level 6

    • Utility Power

  • Level 7

    • Number of Cards increases by 6

      • 6 level 7 Encounter Attack Cards

  • Level 8

  • Level 9

    • Number of Cards Increases by 1

      • 1 Level 1 Daily Attack Card

I'm going to look at some of the essential classes and their unique utility power, and try to make something unique for this class.

I asked my friend "How does he recharge his powers when he has no one to sacrifice" and he answered "He keeps people trapped in one of his cards, and can free them, just to kill them and recharge his deck".

He told me he would only use this in the last fight, where this character becomes the BBEG, but I felt like it needed to be foreshadowed so the PCs won't rage on us. I'm thinking a summoning power where he can summon the essence of one of his captives and control him.

What we have so far:
